I have a fresh XP install and still trying to get things back to normal.I want to change where windows explorer opens to.eg. my computer with the drives listed, not starting in my documents which is the default.Its a simple registry change but I cant find it in my notes.

System Restore to a previous point2. Stopped Windows Management Instrumentation service and set it to MANUAL star 3. Stopped Windows Performance Adapter service and set it to MANUAL start4. Searched registry for entries that could/should be deleted (didn't find the ones I expected to see.)5. General cleanups including Registry Mechanic detect and repair. Norton Antivirus scan. Microsoft AntiSpyware scan / repair. Spybot Search and destroy scan / fix. Spyware Blaster update and enable all protection.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq running windows XP SP2 with the latest updates. For about a week now when you start windows and login as a user or administrator and even safe mode explorer crashes as soon as it starts and every time you try to restart explorer it crashes again. I can do ctrl-alt-del an start a new task other than explorer and the task works just fine but explorer will not work. I've ran anti-virus and spy-ware software and found nothing. I've removed all software that isn't a Microsoft product and still no luck. I would just reinstall windows but I can't find the CD.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3 and I've noticed recently, that when I am online, my puter will all of a sudden get knocked off the server. I dont' know why this so much, nor how to fix the problem. I get the message "can't find server", with Firefox and Internet Explorer. I then have to log off and reboot, which costs me money as I use my computer in my small business. This is very frustrating and I need to know how to fix the problem. I recently moved to an apartment from a house and I'm wondering if that may have something to do with it. maybe all the signals in an apartment setting are crossing or something.

I'm looking for heart rate monitor files using .hrm as the search term and WE says it can't find any files. I can go to C:/program files etc. and get to the files. File formats are xxxxxx.hrm, with xxxxxx being the date. Searching for .hrm on my laptop finds all of the files with no problem.

I thought I may have had a repair utility in Add/Remove programs but IE is not EVEN listed in there NOR OE. View 5 Replies View RelatedIf I double-click a file (or folder) in Windows Explorer, by default the computer opens the file or folder in another program (Virus Scan) and begins to scan it. Obviously, I don't want this. Normally, I should be able to hit ENTER, double-click, or right-click and select the first option, which should be open the folder or file in Explorer. However, this is not so, and I can't figure out what Default setting I changed in order to change the Default operation for any files or folders I select. View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. I just got into a little trouble with my explorer. Whenever I double-click on a folder, it opens in a new window, not in the same one. I even changed "folder option>>general>>open each folder in same window" but with no result. I was actually trying to change the icon for the 'file folder' and I dont really know what I did (went to 'folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced>>change icon....but I changed the icon back to the original icon again) , but from that time, I am unable to change it back to open folders in the same window. In the 'actions' (folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced) section (after i changed the icon) all I could see was a 'find' option. It was opening 'search' window every time I double clicked on a folder, so I created a new action called open and selected 'explorer' as the application to use and then set this 'open' as default. Although it solved the initial problem of opening the 'search' window, it still opens every folder in a new window.

My problem is that when I try to log into an account (any account) I see the desktop icons, task bar, start button for a second and then suddenly they disappear and I am left with the background. I can not bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) or anything else. I have tried a few things:
1. Ran spyware be gone
2. Ran adaware (got a 'cannot find shell.dll' error after doing this)
3. Tried to using selective startup and disabling startup items (when I reboot it turns it back on)
4. Tried creating a new user account --- problem still occurs.
5. Finally tried a reinstall of XP. Significant to note that during this installation I get an error related to explorer.exe.
The first time I tried to reinstall it aborted the installation. I ran a repair on the programs (from disk that came from Dell with my pc). I then tried the reinstall again....I got further this time but still when it was at the point of installing explorer it through another error and said that the program was not installed.I do not know what to do next!
