My wife has a new notebook with Win XP Pro (SP2). I'd like to add My Recent Documents to the Start Menu, but I've looked everywhere, and I can't find that option.

<Windows root>system32hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
Computer became infected with several viruses and now I can't boot up into Windows XP from its original installation on the C partition of my hard drive. It gets to the screen where you sign in and then only the background of the desktop screen appears and it stalls out there.
I can't figure out how to create a current log of the registry file on my C drive with the "Hihackthis" software - I can only get a log of the scan of my D drive registry. I am able to access files on the C partition of my hard drive.
When resarting my compaq presaio 5441, I get to the win 2000 prof start screen, then the system reboots on its own. it continues to do this over and over until i power off.
I donot have win 2000 install disks. when i use startup disk the c drive does not dplaying anything but sys tools
When I push the button to turn on the computer it lights up and makes a few slight noises as if it is going to boot and then it stalls. Nothing happens. I then turn it off manually and try again. first thing I get is a black screen with an Energy Star logo in the top right hand corner, and Phoenix-Award BIOS v6 .00PG on the left. Then a page of information about cache size, System BIOS shadow status etc. I have to press F2 to continue.
Then I am taken to another black screen which is asking me to select the operating system.
If I press ENTER (or even if I don't after a few seconds) it will then start loading Windows.
I have a Win2k installation that I had to "repair". I'm trying to upgrade to XP on this disk to preserve settings but XP Upgrade disk thinks I have an evaluation copy (not so - repaired 2000 from full version sp4 CD bought from Staples years ago). I run winver.exe and it confirms a licensed copy of 2000 and not an evaluation copy. I'm not sure exactly what brought this 2000 system to a halt. I've been trying to fix it on and off for two weeks now after I installed some polaroid digital camcorder software and everything went south. I have an MSI 865PE Neo2 MB and I'm not sure exactly what happened but I lost 3 gb of 'data' on this Western Digital 80gb harddrive suddenly without having any known viruses/trojans or HD problems. Diagnostics ran and run clean. Lost all network connectivity, USB

View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning XP with 'CLASSIC' style menus. When I display PROGRAMS in the START menu, it only displays 3 or 4 items and then it has two Down Arrorws at the bottom of the menu, which I have to click to get the full menu. Is there some setting causing this to happen?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP/SP2 a newish computer and some things changed from how it used to be.From the *Start* Button, there is the further button *Programs*. This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

I tried to install IIS Manager from my CD following these steps:
1. Place the Windows XP Professional CD-Rom into your CD-Rom Drive. If the Windows XP installation window pops up just EXIT.
2. Go to 'Add/Remove Windows Components' found in 'Add/Remove Programs' in the 'Control Panel'.
3. Place a tick in the check box for 'Internet Information Services (IIS)' leaving all the default installation settings intact.
Even after this I am not able to install IIS Manager.
Recently I was working on my brothers pc when I encountered some serious explorer.exe problems. After trying various workarounds with no sucess I ended up doing a repair install (was xp prof sp2). It fixed the explorer.exe problems, but now I have an even bigger headache on my hands.I cannot run Windows Update or IE, although I did download SP3 from download.com. I cannot install it though because it says it needs SP1. I tried installing SP1a, but it says it cannot verify update.inf and to turn on my Cryptographic services. When I try to turn that on, services wont open and produces an error message that says "MMC failed to intialize because it was installed incorrectly or because a portion of the registry has become corrupted. Make sure the file Mmcndmgr.dll is registered by running 'regsvr32 %SystemRoot%system32mmcndmgr.dll'. I try that it says that "Loadlibrary failed - the specific procedure could not be found." Oh, and I am constantly getting an error message which says "the procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll".
I am using Windowa XP Home. When I boot up I am getting the message that the system cannot find the file C:Windowssrvrmsg.exe.I have searched all my drives and it does not exist.
