Spybot 1.5.1 - Program Trying To Change My "HOSTS" File
Nov 29, 2007
I am running Windows XP (Home) on a DellP4 PC at 2.8 GHz with 1.0 GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive and DSL from Verizon. I recently downloaded and ran Spybot 1.5.1 and found that the program was trying to change my "HOSTS" file (C:windowssystem 32driversetchosts). Should I go along with this change, and if so, what is about to change? If not, how do I stop the program from continuing to try to make this change?
I ran Spybot last week and it came up with 36 entries for redirected hosts and 1 for my windows security was disabled. At the same time a problem occured with my Norton live update...alert starting LU1890 referring to live update and how some items had been directed into my Windows host file and providing a link to symantec but I was unable to connect to the web site via the link or google.
I am running Win XP SP2 on a 2.8 GHertz Pentium system with 1 GB memory. I am using the Hosts file from the MVPS web site. It's size is about 274KB. I have a Comcast cable connection. The MVPS web site states that a Hosts file larger than 135 KB may cause Internet Explorer to slow down and suggests changing the Startup Type of the DNS Client service from Automatic to Manual. However, as far as I can tell IE's performance does not obviously change if I disable Hosts (by renaming it) or change the Statup Type of the DNS Client service. I would character IE's performance in general as good to very good.
I have noticed that I have supposedly installed Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) several times today! I think thismay be because spybot is blocking a registry change called Winlogon something or other. Can anyone confirm this? In other words if I tell spybot to allow this will that stop updates from repeatedly trying to install the same thing?
Is there any reason the hosts file should not block sites properly?Certain sites I have put in there aren't being blocked, and this is a problem. Also, does it only block the major site (just the www.badsite.com) and not all subdomains of that? (for example "signup.badsite.com")
A while I had Limewire and Kazaa in my computer(like an idiot). Now I have a spyware problem, possible virus too.I have Ad aware and Spybot search and destory. Both will detect the problems but cannot delete it.I have found the files,(its "search miracle") but XP will not allow me to delete them. "Cannot delete, being used by another program."but no other progams are running. When I try to do a Virus scan now with my McAfee, my computer will restart half way thought the search. and now, at random, my computer will restart itself anytime.
I have been trying to fix an issue with a friends computer. Problem is I'm not very computer savvy :S So that's where you all come in :P I do have some knowledge of computer's and usually catch on pretty quickly. Basically I have been noticing my friends comp has become increasingly slow over the last week I have scanned with AVG and found a change in the following:
I have tried searching for the shell32.dll and found it only to be in the C:/windows/system32 folder as someone recommended in another post I had read on here..Those are the only items showing in a complete scan of the system so I have no idea what is causing this..Also she has been noticing an increased amount of pop ups even when explorer is not running? I believe they are CID or CDI pop ups.
I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago
I was doing some detailed drawings in photoshop, and I also had a generic photo up in photoshop as well. I went to save my drawings, but apparently accidentally saved the photo under the drawins name and then closed the program. This morning I discovered the bad news. Is there a way to get that drawing back? I do not know if it was ever saved before.
I have a cd burner and xp and was wandering how can i record a movie file that is on a file sharing program what type of recording cd do i use i don't have a dvd burner.
I have a file damaged in my Windows, i dont know if i need it or i should repair it and even how to, but i was hoping someone can lead me in the right direction. The file is in my downloaded program files Windows/system32/IUCTL.DLL, THE PROGRAM FILE DOESNT HAVE A NAME BUT USES AN ID
I earlier asked how to increase the number of downloads I might run simultaneously and I received a satisfactory answer.NOW (yeah, I'm greedy), I want to know if it is possible when downloading several items to TEMPORARILY cause one download to be able to "hog" most of the link capacity.
When I right click on a file and go to properties and go to "opens with" and click "change": The option box at the bottom that states: "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" - is faded out and cannot be unchecked. How do you change this so this option is available?
Every now and then the F & T drives will switch drive letters when this happens I cannot get into the F drive. Is there some way I can get into a built in program and change drive letters?? rsimoneau
I cant change my background like I should normally be able to. I can't right click on a jpg and set it as background and it wont detect any of the wallpapers i have in my pictures folder like it used to. The only wallpapers it will use are the default windows wallpapers or anything i set to wallpaper by right clicking on an image online. As for my other problem, I can't get files to open with the correct program. I know i can set a file type to always open with a certain prgram, but that isnt working. Example: I have a .max file which should open in 3ds max. Instead it opens in nothing and stay a blank file with no icon. I can still open it by opening up the program and opening it from there, but it's annoying. My winamp play lists also all seem to want to open in windows media player no matter how many time i tell them to always open in winamp.
I've noticed another problem after restarting that I don't normally have. When I log in i get this Preparing to Install. Please wait while windows find 'new copy' ERROR 1706. No valid source could be found for this product NewCopy. The windows installer can not continue.(I press ok)....
my problem: a c++ program that i was running has suddenly stopped running correctly - i am taking a series of 4 shots using a logitech pro 3000, used to be between the shots you could see yourself on the monitor - now you can only see yourself before the 1st shot. where, what can i look at to correct this? is there someway/where to control the background color of the monitor - or would this be written into the program? i have done a re-install of the program to no avail. any ideas, gui stuff?, gdi stuff? the system i am using is as follows: thinkpad 600X. 500mgh pentium III, hitachi 12gb hd (8gb free), 128 ram, windows XP-sp1, neo-magic magicgraph 256 video card
I have a folder full of pictures of my greatgrandson who passed away last month. The extension on each picture is .jpg. I sent the folder to my daughter and she couldn't open it because the extension on the folder is .ink.
How do I change a file extension from GIF to JPEG? I want to change a picture from GIF to JPEG. Is there a way to do this. I scanned the pictures into my computer. I want to upload them to Shutterfly, but they do not accept GIF.
The problem is that when I try to change folder/file attributes, I click on Apply and OK. Once that is done, the attributes reset back to what it was before.I've tried to unset "Read-Only" for a folder, but it stays Read-Only. Any way to fix this?
I just switch hosts for one of my web sites. I change the name servers and they have propgated because I checked the DNS on a DNS report website and the domain name points to the new host. Everyone can connect to the new host and view my web site except for me. The only way I can connect and view my web site is if I go to it through a proxy. I tried flushing the cache. I tried clearing the temporary internet files and history. I tried disabling the negative caching through the registry. I tried restarting the dns client service.
I moved an inbox file (inbox (2).dbx) from one computer to another. I want Outlook Express on the second computer to open that folder when I click on the the "Inbox" folder in the list of folders, but instead, it creates a new (and empty) inbox.dbx folder rather that opening the inbox (2).dbx file. On the originating computer, the Inbox folder in the list of folders has a path to the inbox (2).dbx file, while on the newer computer, the path is to a non-existent inbox.dbx file (which Outlook Express creates anew each time I open it on the second computer). I would like to be able to change the path of the Inbox folder in Outlook Express on the second computer so that it opens the inbox (2).dbx file and does not create another inbox.dbx instead.
I want this so that I can synchronize my email account between the two computers (without having to change the name of the inbox (2).dbx to inbox.dbx every time. I can find no way to alter the path of the Inbox folder so that it opens the inbox (2).dbx file on the second computer. And if I click on the inbox (2).dbx file and tell Windows to open it in Outlook Express, it opens Outlook Express, but still there is no folder containing the contents of the inbox (2).dbx file visible in Outlook Express! How do I change the pathway so that the Inbox folder in Outlook Express opens the inbox (2).dbx file?
I routinely download the latest set of filters for my anti-spam program, and Windows routinely wants to save them in My Documents, by default. I ALAWYS save the file (filters.txt) to the following location (by Right-clicking the file):C:Documents and SettingsMickApplication DataMailWasherPro, Is there any way that that I can: Save this particular file to the abovementioned Path, by default? Without disturbing Windows current, Save In My Documents setting? I am using WinXP Professional SP3 (fully updated).
And of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.
On my Dell Desktop, I reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP SP2 4 months ago. Today, I tried to adjust the Paging File size but could not. The machine will go through the motions of allowing a change then call for the required reboot when I changed the file size, but after reboot, the old file size is unchanged. I cannot change it to having the system manage the file, nor can I change the custom file size.
I have a laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. I just got into a little trouble with my explorer. Whenever I double-click on a folder, it opens in a new window, not in the same one. I even changed "folder option>>general>>open each folder in same window" but with no result. I was actually trying to change the icon for the 'file folder' and I dont really know what I did (went to 'folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced>>change icon....but I changed the icon back to the original icon again) , but from that time, I am unable to change it back to open folders in the same window. In the 'actions' (folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced) section (after i changed the icon) all I could see was a 'find' option. It was opening 'search' window every time I double clicked on a folder, so I created a new action called open and selected 'explorer' as the application to use and then set this 'open' as default. Although it solved the initial problem of opening the 'search' window, it still opens every folder in a new window.
Back at Christmas of 2002 I transfered all my files with a intellimover program. I found these files while clicking the Tools button on my browser window, Internet Options from there and then View Objects. The first thing in this downloaded list is a filed listed as and it says that it is damaged. It also has a date on it that is before my transfere. This file came from a HP Windows98 computer to my now Dell XP WIndows. It's only 4kb. It also says it was accessed today for some reason. Is my computer really using this file? Is this a file I need. I think its a windows update thing but now sure.
Small home peer to peer LAN with XP Pro SP2 and a recent standard setup as a work group on all but I cannot browse the program files folder either way.I get the access is denied due to permissions message - but I haven't set anything special.I am try to run programs which reside in the prgram files folder of one computer on another.
I supposed to be able to open a lot of files with different extensions stored in a folder. My documents Chess Base.Windows can't open them at this time and no relevant answer could be found at http://filext.com. Impossible to make an appropriate choice from an open program list. Do separate programs have to be needed for each file extension? How to fix this problem ? Should the manufacturer of the product "Echecs Deluxe powered by Fritz" finally be contacted?
