Nov 11, 2005
I have a folder full of pictures of my greatgrandson who passed away last month. The extension on each picture is .jpg. I sent the folder to my daughter and she couldn't open it because the extension on the folder is .ink.

I have a file without an extension that I need to a) Identify, and b) Recover/Open. It is 559 MB (586,412,032 bytes), and is suppose to be a backup of emails from Windows XP (Outlook Express) that was created by a friend of mine, although he has since forgotten how he created it. It did have a file extension at first, though I tried changing it to several others while trying to open it, and through the process, the original file extension has been lost. Since then, I have just deleted the file name altogether. I have tried several programs in an attempt to identify the file, though none of them worked. The programs I have tried are File Analyzer, TrIDNet, DaubNET: Identify! None of them could identify the file. All of my emails and contacts are in this file, and I really need them.

I just discovered 20 of these files in the C: root directory in one of my computers and have never seen them there before. This is what the file name looks like:I did a Google search on it and it appears to have something to do with MSN Messenger 8.0. If that's the case, I did install the 8.0 beta version about a week ago - which originally worked, but no longer does. I haven't uninstalled it yet.

Recently, I uninstalled Macromedia DreamWeaver MX. When I did that, however, it took a lot of the pre-set file extensions with it, such as ".PHP", ".CSS", ".JS", etcetera. How can I get my Microsoft Windows XP to recognise these file formats again, and have them all editable in Notepad again?

I supposed to be able to open a lot of files with different extensions stored in a folder. My documents Chess Base.Windows can't open them at this time and no relevant answer could be found at http://filext.com. Impossible to make an appropriate choice from an open program list. Do separate programs have to be needed for each file extension? How to fix this problem ? Should the manufacturer of the product "Echecs Deluxe powered by Fritz" finally be contacted?

About two day's ago I looked in the PF folder in my machine and as usual the PF's were .txt (except the Layout.ini, of course). But just now I happened to take a look at them and noticed that they have all changed to .pdf in some way. e.g. if I recall correctly an AVG Free file would be [something like] AVG75Free.txt but now it is AVG75FREE_516A1262.EXE-225B0AE9.pf and when I attempt to open it I get an error saying:Adobe Reader cannot open AVG75FREE_516A1262.EXE-225B0AE9.pf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example if was sent as an email attachment and hasn't correctly decoded). My default pdf reader is Foxit. And the proficiency with which files/programs are opened does not seem to have been retarded.I don't recall doing anything that I believe may have caused this. And the only thing I have downloaded since last looking in the PF folder is TweakUI. Could the cause simply be a matter of non-intelligent design?
System backups are of no help as I apparently deleted any such when I cleaned house yesterday. The closest I have come to fixing the problem is to change the file type in Folder Options to Text Document using the TXT file extension which places the Notepad icon on the PF files (even after restart) instead of the usual [plain] text doc icon. But the PF files are now otherwise building and opening properly. Is having the Notepad icon on the PF files a problem? Complete AVGFree a/s and AVGFree a/v scans with current updates indicate no problems. I am using XP Home SP2 with all critical updates.

So chkdsk ran on my camera's memory card and now all my .JPG pictures now have .CHK as the file extension. If I manually change .CHK back to .JPG, my pictures are back to normal. The problem is is that I now have about 1,200 .CHK files to change back to .JPG. Is there a program that will mass edit file extensions for me?

I have a few files mostly images where the file extension seems to be wrong. sometimes just renaming the extension to .jpg or .gif or .bmp works, But it's trial & error. Is there some kind of utility that'll open files and identify what type they really are, and rename them accordingly?

For some odd reason now, everything on my desktop, and inside of my folders, pictures with the extension of JPG and so forth are not able to be saved unless i type in the extension also. I have no clue what could have triggered such an error, and I have no clue how to fix it. If I go and try to rename a file in my Pictures folder, for example, I can't rename it unless i type it as...."image.jpg"....I can't just save it as plain old, "image" - what the heck is going on? Does anyone know what happened or how to fix this?

I finished downloading a Windows automatic update. Before the update, I had no errors (use Norton), but now I have an unfixable "missing or invalid file extension" error .wll. The program it relates to is Word.Addin.8, whatever that is. I wouldn't even care, but I was getting this message for awhile before my computer crashed last November. Google mentions something about "memory leaks" in Word. I'm clueless.

I do all my document scanning in M$ Office. It scans documents as a .tif file which open with M$ Office Document imaging. However, every few weeks, the .tif file extension disappears from folder options/ file types, my scans have a generic icon and open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, which I don't like. I have to enter a new file type with a .tif extension to get my scans to open again in Document Imaging.

I recently received an email from someone who told me they sent an excel file. I normally recieve excel files weekly from this person, l so I have no reason to belive it was not. When I tried to download it ("save as", not "open"), the file name was "CAD2359." and did not have a file extension. I changed the name to "new users", added an xls after the "dot" and the file downloaded, then I opened the Excel file normally.Later, I saw in the folder there were two files. One called "new users.xls" which is functioning correctly, and another called "new users." with no file extension (or recognizable icon). If I try to open that file, I get the "Open with" box, asking me to choose the program I wan to open it with.If I try to change the name of the file, I get an error message "Can not rename file. Can not read from source file or disk".If I try to delete the file, I get an error message "Can not delete file. Can not read from source file or disk".

I moved an inbox file (inbox (2).dbx) from one computer to another. I want Outlook Express on the second computer to open that folder when I click on the the "Inbox" folder in the list of folders, but instead, it creates a new (and empty) inbox.dbx folder rather that opening the inbox (2).dbx file. On the originating computer, the Inbox folder in the list of folders has a path to the inbox (2).dbx file, while on the newer computer, the path is to a non-existent inbox.dbx file (which Outlook Express creates anew each time I open it on the second computer). I would like to be able to change the path of the Inbox folder in Outlook Express on the second computer so that it opens the inbox (2).dbx file and does not create another inbox.dbx instead.
I want this so that I can synchronize my email account between the two computers (without having to change the name of the inbox (2).dbx to inbox.dbx every time. I can find no way to alter the path of the Inbox
folder so that it opens the inbox (2).dbx file on the second computer. And if I click on the inbox (2).dbx file and tell Windows to open it in Outlook Express, it opens Outlook Express, but still there is no folder containing the contents of the inbox (2).dbx file visible in Outlook Express! How do I change the pathway so that the Inbox folder in Outlook Express opens the inbox (2).dbx file?

And of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.

On my Dell Desktop, I reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP SP2 4 months ago. Today, I tried to adjust the Paging File size but could not. The machine will go through the motions of allowing a change then call for the required reboot when I changed the file size, but after reboot, the old file size is unchanged. I cannot change it to having the system manage the file, nor can I change the custom file size.
