Adaware Spybot Search And Destory - No Program Runs
Jan 16, 2005
A while I had Limewire and Kazaa in my computer(like an idiot). Now I have a spyware problem, possible virus too.I have Ad aware and Spybot search and destory.
Both will detect the problems but cannot delete it.I have found the files,(its "search miracle") but XP will not allow me to delete them.
"Cannot delete, being used by another program."but no other progams are running.
When I try to do a Virus scan now with my McAfee, my computer will restart half way thought the search. and now, at random, my computer will restart itself anytime.
Exactly as the file says. I try to open a drive to search through it.. such as the c: drive.. and it will do a little processing.. and it will open the browser to the 'search' program instead of opening my drive. Same goes for every file on my computer! Eek! Anybody got any ideas? I may have f*$&ed something up when I was trying to change the default folder and drive icons in the Folder Options. Anybody! This is rather detrimental to my computers health lol! help!!
Alright, I have no clue as to what this problem may be caused by. I've ran Spybot S&D as well as Adaware and nothing has improved. My CPU usage still runs at 100% regardless of my rebooting and such. I've got an AMD athlon xp 2700, 1024 mb ram, & Windows XP SP2.
After I cleaned up his pc the best I could and ran Spybot and Adaware I ran Hijack this. They have a program that downloads weather information and could be spyware. It does download ads. (I think it's called weather bug) I'm trying to convince them to get rid of it. It comes up in the Spybot scans as mini bug or something.
I am the administrator (at least I assume I am since I set up our home computer) on my home Dell Dimension. I try and run AdAware and Spybot regularly but it seems that I have to go to each desktop (there are five users on our home computer) to run them to make sure I clean up everything. As you can imagine, especially since my kids do a lot of cruising (most of it supervised), it takes a long time. I am hoping there is some way to be able to run these apps from my desktop and globally cover all desktops at once, but I haven't found it. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
My work PC which I believe has some kind of Spyware, even though Spybot and Adaware don't find anything. It all started when a DOS window started appearing on startup and launching some unknown program.
I have a Gateway 400VTX laptop running windows xp pro. Sound suddenly stopped on it; I don't know exactly when or after what. It was working during the initial days of Hurricane Katrina because I was listening to the news feeds on it, so sometime in the last week or so I noticed it stopped.
I have done the following to troubleshoot:
Run antivirus - norton internet security & trend micro free scan Run adaware and spybot
After a fresh install of windows and downloading SP2 etc plus some other things like a few games, adaware, spybot and kaperspy, I was just browsing (just a normal site, no porn) and I got the explore.exe encountered a problem and needs to close. I can still do browsing and open stuff etc. I tried reinstalling sp2, replacing the explorer.exe file, unchecking non-microsoft programs in msconfig, all with no result. I'm probably gonna just install Litestep and say screw it, but am wondering
Twice so far in the past 4 days my computer has restarted itself automatically. When I get back to the desktop I check the task manager to see if any foul programs are running (which I didn't recognize any) and I noticed my CPU usage was fluctuating between 50% - 100%, never lower. I rebooted into safe mode and the CPU usage was norma (bouncing between 1 - 10%). I've ran adaware, spybot, and trend micro online virus scan which all came up clean. I haven't gotten any error messages or anything like it.
I have been experiencing random crashes, freezes and especially error messages for a while now.I ran and reran updated versions of ad-aware, spybot, Norton, hijack this, a million times, defragged and did a couple of files clean-ups to no avail. I posted my problems on various boards and nobody that helped did fix it (Thanks still to these kind people) so I used the last resort and reinstalled XP pro.Well after reinstall, problems are still here but worse, upon reinstalling my first program which is thesygate firewall,I got my first error message telling me the program had to shut down. Following that I was told
i am going o get a new system with 64bit, and i was wondering, i will be using AVAST for anti virus.. And i was wondering if i would be able to use programs like Spybot S&D adaware SE, and other programs along those lines... And or will i need them...
I am working on a PC for a friend and after installing Adaware,Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster and Avast I found too many things wrong with the PC and was trying to just reinstall Windows instead. I followed Dells instructions to Hold down Control and then hit F11 and then release both at the same time to get to the restore screen. Well it never came up and I got to the Safe Mode Last Known Good Configuration screen instead. I kept trying and nothing would change, so I picked Safe Mode. Now all I get is the BSOD that states Unmountable boot volume. Stop Error 0x000000ed (0x83376900,0xc0000006,0x0000000,0x0000000)
Spybot Search and Destroy's Advanced Mode includes a System Internals section that searches for registry inconsistencies and will remove them or replace them with a user-specified file. Hoping for the best, I went ahead and removed a number of entries which clearly referred to applications I know for sure I uninstalled and/or deleted. It goes without saying that I saved a pre-modification logfile, as well as allowing Spybot to create a System Retore Point before making changes.
I haven't restarted the system yet, nor do I believe there to be a problem per se; with the possible exception of what I've described here this is just intended as routine maintenance unless and until I discover otherwise Something else I did while I was in there was to put a check in the box next to "Lock Hosts File As Read-Only." That was the right thing to do...right?
Recently cleaned up a friend's very infected machine. The jury is still out as to how much damage was done (specifically to the registry), but something weird is going on. When I right click the C drive in My Computer, the EZ CD Creator 5 install program starts executing. I didn't see a autorun.inf file or on the drive which is the only thing I can think of. Any ideas?
Figured I'd add some more info. I've installed a second drive to take backups to. Backup of 12G of data to the drive while the OS was up took 1.5 hours, took much less from an emergency disk, weird. XP SP2 256K memory. I'm also getting a windowformsparkingwindow popup on a shutdown. Reasonably sure this is due to HP stuff on the machine. Java is busted up but I wanted to start getting the backups going before uninstalling that and reinstalling.
I am using musicmatch jukebox. excellent program, however mim.exe added in vs 10 is rather annoying. slows shutdown dramatically. would like to write a batch program that kills mim.exe then runs shutdown.exe(-r, -u, etc). i am thinking that killing mim will allow xp to shutdown properly(at least the same day....a little humour...very little).
I got some help on removing maleware and after running combofix my computer no longer auto runs program/game cd,dvd. My computer has no other problems.
Using a Toshiba Satellite 1800 Laptop 1GHz Intel P3 - BIOS Ver 1.90 04/18/2002.
The past week or two it seems that the computer locks up, the Task Manager shows the CPU running at 100%. It allows some activity all be it slow & shutting down all programs (which are not locked up) does not stop the activity - including disconnecting the internet. Have run Norton scan, Spybot S&D and Adaware with nothing of significance found. Ran HiJackThis and found some startup stuff and stopped them from running but I don't know enough about the programs that are running to remove them.
Last time I booted I had to force a shutdown after waiting for 15 minutes. Next reboot took 22 minutes for the CPU to back off of 100%. I started Task Mgr very early into the boot, just before the icons started to appear and it showed 33 processes running. I watched as 14 more started up all while the CPU was steady at 100% usage. Then at 5 minutes after booting the processor dropped to 50% bounced around for a minute then went back to 100%. There was some activity through the modem (cable) but not very much. I unplugged the modem power. I shut down Skype, MSN Messenger and MS Defender and about a minute later the CPU dropped to 27%. Nothing of what I shut down appeared to alter anything.
I hope someone can see something...
Here is my latest HiJackThis log

I am running Windows XP (Home) on a DellP4 PC at 2.8 GHz with 1.0 GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive and DSL from Verizon. I recently downloaded and ran Spybot 1.5.1 and found that the program was trying to change my "HOSTS" file (C:windowssystem 32driversetchosts). Should I go along with this change, and if so, what is about to change? If not, how do I stop the program from continuing to try to make this change?
I cant open exe files on my computer. It comes up with the notice that It cant find a program for it on my computer and it I want to manually search for a program or use a web service to find an appropriate program. The web service button dont work.
I am running XP SP2 with all current updates installed. Sometime after Windows Update performed an update, I noticed that when I try to run Search (Start, Search), the search app freezes after I type in the file search criteria and click the "search" button". Attempting to close the application results in "this program not responding." and ultimately "You chose to end the nonreponsive program, Windows Explorer." Please Tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report... [Send Error Report] [Don't Send] This is identical to a problem reported on 3/1/2005 but doesn't appear to have a resolution.
I have some software called "find it." The software indexes every word one types in microsoft word or excell. I have used it for many years in Windows 98 without problems, both in my home and at work. Recently my office updated the OS system from 98 to Windows XP2 Professional edition. The "Find it" program does not work with the Windows XP2. I have 2 laptops with Windows XP Home edition. "Find It" works fine in those laptops. TheWindowsXP search program is not as good as "Find It." Can anyone suggest how I might be able to get "Find It" to work with XP2 Professional Edition?
Like the title says, everytime i turn my machine on the windows page appears on start and the load bar just keeps going. I left this running for an hour and nothing happened.
I have read tons of stuff and tried loads of stuff and yes you guessed it nothing has sorted it out.
My computer knowledge isnt great so if this requires Bios work or Command prompts i will need some detailed help.
randomly, with random programs (be it IE, word, AIM, stinger, ad-aware, basically any program) when i go to open them i get a error saying the program has encountered errors and needs to close.the little window that pops up usually offers a "debug" button, but i dont know what that is so i just hit continue/ok and the program im trying to open will close sometimes i cant open it for a while, sometimes i can open it on second try.then the window comes up like send report to windows.o usually ill just send itand these errors appear for basically any program i have,
I am new to this forum and would be happy if anyone can help me with this problem. (Forgive my english, it is not very good!)I am using a Windows XP laptop, used it in the office and at home. It is now extremely slow. I have read some threads and have done somethings (maybe right, maybe wrong) based on those threads... I am not good with computers and having difficulty to figure out what these threads are saying.I have installed Ad-aware and run it regularly, sometimes twice a day and everytime it will find a few critical items. I also do trend micro scan but there are certain things that I can't understand. I also do Panda active scan but it found one adware that it cannot disinfect.
Whenever I try to use the Start|Search|For Files or Folders function of Windows XP, I get the following Error message box stating, "A file required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run Setup". (1) Does anyone have any idea what caused this problem? (2) What file is missing? (3) Can I fix it without having to run Setup?
I have a pretty old and crappy computer with a 40gb HDD. Just a week ago I had like 13-14 GB free on it. Then I got a virus. I successfully cleared out all traces of the virus that I could find using ad-aware and trend micro house call. When I was scanning with adaware, it shows the filenames and paths being scanned. There were all of these files(and I mean thousands) with porn names, and I had never put them there. Adaware didn't catch them as any sort of bad file either. The weird thing is, when I went to the directory that it said they were located in, nothing was there. I even made hidden files visible and still nothing.
