SSDP Discovery Service Not Start - Error 1079
Aug 9, 2010
While troubleshooting a problem that prevents the picture download software that came with my Canon camera from working, I discovered that the SSDP Discovery Service is not running. Efforts to start the service failed with the following error: "Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running the same process."

my xp sp1 athlon suddenly was stuck on startup with something causeing the busy pointer to never stop-i couldnt get into anything except by repeated ctrl/alt/delete to turn things off one by one-discovered it was svchost=ssdp discovery service?-disabled it from services and everything was fine again, but what was it doing there in the first place? i like to keep things at a minimum on my pc and try to turn off everything i can-went into add/remove windows components and saw a bunch of new things that were never there before-distributed transaction coordinator, wmi and com+ wont let me remove them? i'm just a home user not on any network, so i dont need/want any of the network tools/stuff.- i dont remember downloading or turning on anything new, but that doesnt mean i havent, if you know what i mean-awhile back, i did some tweak from kellys corner to add something to windows components, but i dont remember what it was now-if anyone knows what i did or whats going on, could you tell me how to turn it off again, or whatever suggestions there might be-i almost was getting ready to do an xp reload, as i hate when after awhile, you get all those extra undeleted temps, registry stuff, etc. that bog down your system-but if i can clear this up, i dont think i'm there yet

Got the dreaded "Windows failed to boot up. Desperately searching for some way of getting into WinXP Pro but had no success until I tried the following, which I have written for our users: winxp pro on one of my XP machines would not boot into windows. Tried the "usual" steps to boot, including use of the winxp cd and the win boot up floppy. No luck but I was able to get into Safe Mode using the floppy and then hit Start>Run and typed in the run box "msconfig" (without the quote marks). When it opened, I noticed in the the bottom of the window had this Launch System Restore words so I clicked it and was able to restore the computer system to a day before the last restore, let it do it's thing and when it was over, winxp booted up and I was back in business.

I have a Windows XP PC dedicated to a machine that is constantly sending data via a serial port to the PC. When we power up the system the PC will sometimes think that the serial data coming in is a "new device" and installs it as a serial mouse. When the boot process is complete the PC runs a program from the Startup folder. When this program tries to open the serial port it is blocked by the "serial mouse" it thinks is there.
We have tried many things to prevent this problem. Disabling the mouse in Device Manager works for a while but eventually XP decides there is something wrong and does things like disable the COM port. We have tried disabling the Plug N Play services using MSCONFIG. This does not seem to prevent the detection of the "serial mouse" on boot up. We have a fixed set of hardware and software for this system that will never change. So I'd like to just disable all (or serial) device discovery on boot up. How is this done on XP?

Working on xp box, wouldn't backup data from qbpro directly to cd, uninstalled nero, realplayer and other extraneous items, rebooted and wala! No problem, cd writing wizard popped up after backup, did probably 10 backups. She also mentioned that her accountant couldnt get her flashdrive to install anymore. I plugged in usb device. No sweat, popped right up. Today she called, same problem, have to shut machine down completely to resolve it now, windows restart won't fix it. (which sadly, I realize was the case yesterday) She was atttempting to make multiple backup cd's, so she checked burn same again. It comes up with insert writeable cd. Doesn't recognise swap, after exiting cd wizard one time, it did pop up with the contents of the cd, but only one time. Also figured out that if I insert usb device after restart, it recognises it correctly, but then get write error (insert writeable cd) when attempting to do a a backup. If I start doing backups, can do them fine, utnil trying to write same file to another cd. Have found many referneces to autoinsert errors in the registry etc. but auto insert appears to be working after restart. Am confident complete reinstall will fix the problem.

My computer (Windows XP, all patches but SP3) has started crashing and now it is getting more and more frequent. No BSOD. Just "click" and lights out. Nothing predictable about it, either. I am getting hordes of DCOM errors in event viewer. Event ID 10010, with description "The server {8BC3F05E-D65B-11D0-A075-00C04FB68820} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. While chasing this down in an amateur fashion, I found out that the WMI service (Windows Management Instrumentation) which is set to start automatically is not starting. Nor can the service be manually started. When I try to start it manually, I get the following Services alert popup "Could not start the Windows Management Instrumentation service on Local Computer. Error 193:0xcl

The problem is that each time I turn the pc on, if I want to access the internet, I must right click on My Computer, then Manage and then Service and Applications and then Double Click DHCP Client. It is set for Autostart but something is wrong because I have to manually start it up. I did a quick check on other items that had no status and they seem to be in this file: 'System32svchost.exe -k netscvs'. The tech guy from my ISP told me that it could be a problem with my XP disc? I can't see how. When my friend installed this hardware he also installed an extra hard drive, around 6 gig for things I might want on a backup incase something happens to my main hard drive. He formatted both hard drives and put Windows 98 on the main drive, not aware that you could do a clean install with XP.Now when my computer starts up I have to choose either Windows XP Home or Windows if I choose Windows nothing happens. Just a blinking cursor. My main concern right now is that I have to manuallly start up the DHCP Client if I want to go online.I went into the BIOS looking for answers.

When I turn my pc and windows loads up an error message appears saying that windows service pack 2 setup has encountered an error and has to close. However when I close the error message it keeps popping up every 20 seconds or so. When I went to microsofts website that told me that service pack 2 was installed on my pc. I have ran a full viral scan using the latest version of Panda and have also ran Reg-cure to see if the problem was in the registry but the error message still keeps popping up.

My computer is Toshiba Satellite A215, with Windows XP home edition. I had Service Pack 2, but about a week ago, I updated to Service Pack 3. After installing Service Pack 3, the whole computer slowed down and started acting weird. The speaker started to make noise, it started to show error messages often, the internet does not work smoothly, spyware & virus search take 10 hour or more and never finish (it used to take only a few hours), etc.
So, I wanted to put the Service Pack 2 back to my computer. I tried uninstalling SP 3. But it failed uninstalling and I got a message says something like "couldn't uninstall SP3". I thought it might let me uninstall if I restart the computer and I tried to restart, and it never start again. This blue screen with a message, something like "autochk program not found-autochk skipped" comes up and then it goes back to the Windows LOGO screen and keeps doing the same thing. I read about some similar problems, and tried a few things, like starting with safe mode or last setting that worked, etc, but they do not seem to work....

I own a SONY VAIO desktop PC, and I'm trying to install the XP Service Pack 2. However, whenever I try to, either when prompted by Windows Automatic Update or when I do it on Microsoft's website, the installation would always pause midway and return with an "Access is Denied" dialogue box. Microsoft's website had something regarding this issue --http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 -- but under Step 2, I couldn't find any specific registry key that resembled the one that was given Quote: The found entry in the Setupapi.log file should be similar to the following example: #-007 Deleting registry key HKCRvnd.ms.radio #E033 Error 5: Access is denied. This is what I see in the setupapi.log text file:
Code: #E008 Setting registry value HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesssdpsrv\DependOnService#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.#E065 Parsing AddReg section [Product.Add.Reg]......................

"An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service you may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes" Have tried system restore three times to different dates and after each bootup I get the message after logging in "cannot restore to 26th DEC" or whatever other date I tried. Have also done a search for msconfig.exe and the only exe file is in the path C:WindowsPrefetch under the name MSCONFIG.EXE-35E4DAE9.pf. Am sure the correct file should me in a windows system folder but don't seem to be there.

Can somebody please help with the following annoying little problem I am encountering? I can't seem to detect and repair the source of the aforementioned titled 'Error Message'. The message reads (exactly) as follows: "The Cfg Registry key denied access to SYSTEM account programs so the Service Control Manager took ownership of the Registry key". It sounds a bit spooky and has got me completely baffled and bemused?

I'm having a somewhat-recurring issue wherein I'll play a PopCap or SOE Game and be interrupted by the dreaded BSOD. When I go into my event viewer and look at the only red-exclamation-point item I can, I see the following (two items, both appear in the log at exactly the same time. In this case, the game was Free Realms. As you'll note from the error, it appears to be related to the Windows Search Service. I've attached the minidump to this link, for those of you uber-XP-experts that can understand it. Also, I keep this PC maintained pretty well. I run anti-malware software on a regular basis, use ClamWin for my antivirus, and avoid iffy-websites.

I've had ongoing problems with my 13-day old Gateway with Windows XP, seemingly due to all the updating and reconfiguring it took to get XP to work with older applications and my printer. I've received several service host error report messages, several days ago the sound stopped for no reason (uninstalling Realtek fixed that), and yesterday my backup program stopped working and my colors changed. The desktop turned from teal to yellowish green and the text changed from white to yellowish. A Gateway tech had me do "Big Fix" and nothing changed. He said I have to do a System Restore to get XP back to its original state. Tomorrow is the last day I can return my computer to the store where I bought it. What would cause colors to change by themselves?
