I need to go to turn on Network Discovery. I have WinXP, everytime I do a search everything is coming up about windows vista which I do not have. I am trying to see other computers on my network and i CANT and really dont know how to.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer and MY Wife's computer are networked and we can share 'MY Documents' from both computers. All was fine until yesterday when she asked "what all all these files here in My Documents" I recognized them as files/folder from MY PC. Apparently our PC's now have duplicates of each others MY Documents' on the others PC. I do not want my wife's documents on my PC and I don't want mine on hers. How do I turn off MS Folder Synchronization ? I recently ungraded to Microsoft Office 2007 and I see this MS Office Groove. Is this the program that is doing this?

Desperately searching for some way of getting into WinXP Pro but had no success until I tried the following, which I have written for our users: winxp pro on one of my XP machines would not boot into windows. Tried the "usual" steps to boot, including use of the winxp cd and the win boot up floppy. No luck but I was able to get into Safe Mode using the floppy and then hit Start>Run and typed in the run box "msconfig" (without the quote marks). When it opened, I noticed in the the bottom of the window had this Launch System Restore words so I clicked it and was able to restore the computer system to a day before the last restore, let it do it's thing and when it was over, winxp booted up and I was back in business.

View 3 Replies View Relatedmy xp sp1 athlon suddenly was stuck on startup with something causeing the busy pointer to never stop-i couldnt get into anything except by repeated ctrl/alt/delete to turn things off one by one-discovered it was svchost=ssdp discovery service?-disabled it from services and everything was fine again, but what was it doing there in the first place? i like to keep things at a minimum on my pc and try to turn off everything i can-went into add/remove windows components and saw a bunch of new things that were never there before-distributed transaction coordinator,wmi and com+ wont let me remove them? i'm just a home user not on any network, so i dont need/want any of the network tools/stuff.- i dont remember downloading or turning on anything new, but that doesnt mean i havent, if you know what i mean-awhile back, i did some tweak from kellys corner to add something to windows components, but i dont remember what it was now-if anyone knows what i did or whats going on, could you tell me how to turn it off again, or whatever suggestions there might be-i almost was getting ready to do an xp reload, as i hate when after awhile, you get all those extra undeleted temps, registry stuff, etc. that bog down your system-but if i can clear this up, i dont think i'm there yet
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows XP PC dedicated to a machine that is constantly sending data via a serial port to the PC. When we power up the system the PC will sometimes think that the serial data coming in is a "new device" and installs it as a serial mouse. When the boot process is complete the PC runs a program from the Startup folder. When this program tries to open the serial port it is blocked by the "serial mouse" it thinks is there.
We have tried many things to prevent this problem. Disabling the mouse in Device Manager works for a while but eventually XP decides there is something wrong and does things like disable the COM port. We have tried disabling the Plug N Play services using MSCONFIG. This does not seem to prevent the detection of the "serial mouse" on boot up. We have a fixed set of hardware and software for this system that will never change. So I'd like to just disable all (or serial) device discovery on boot up. How is this done on XP?
Working on xp box, wouldn't backup data from qbpro directly to cd, uninstalled nero, realplayer and other extraneous items, rebooted and wala! No problem, cd writing wizard popped up after backup, did probably 10 backups. She also mentioned that her accountant couldnt get her flashdrive to install anymore. I plugged in usb device. No sweat, popped right up. Today she called, same problem, have to shut machine down completely to resolve it now, windows restart won't fix it. (which sadly, I realize was the case yesterday) She was atttempting to make multiple backup cd's, so she checked burn same again. It comes up with insert writeable cd. Doesn't recognise swap, after exiting cd wizard one time, it did pop up with the contents of the cd, but only one time. Also figured out that if I insert usb device after restart, it recognises it correctly, but then get write error (insert writeable cd) when attempting to do a a backup. If I start doing backups, can do them fine, utnil trying to write same file to another cd. Have found many referneces to autoinsert errors in the registry etc. but auto insert appears to be working after restart. Am confident complete reinstall will fix the problem.

When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

So I assumed it might be the power supply so I went and bought a new one from stamples. He turned on for maybe 5 seconds then turned off. so I took it back thinking maybe I didn't have enough watts. The higher watts didn't doanything. I am lost without my computer can anyone help? I have Win XP..Could it be the fan? Even though the fan worked when i plugged in first PS...Second didnt do anything. Could it be something to do with motherboard?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a gateway 6520 gz laptop with IE6 and XPHE, I 'm on a network with two computers and use NETWORK MAGIC for the network, when I turn the laptop on it wants to display {the page cannot be displayed} instead of going online! Then NETWORK MAGIC pops-up and says {YOU ARE NOW CONNECTED} then I have to manually turn on IE6 button to go online, almost like the page {the page cannot be displayed} wants to come up first instead of the connection?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI need to have network drive on my Windows XP computer. In order for a software to work, there needs to exist a network drive, named N, existing on my PC. Since there's not a second PC to link to, what I did was to created a directory named est on the same PC , share it out, and then, map a network drive, named N, to it. When my PC has an Ethernet cable connected to a switch, Windows XP will see that N drive (existing on the same PC). The moment I disconnect that Ethernet cable from the switch, the N drive is gone. Is there a way to have a mapped network drive on XP (as mentioned above), without the need to have a network cable connecting that PC to a switch?

And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.

It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.
This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.
what is not necessary to have on and how I can turn them off I would really appreciate it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedHad to reinstall Windows XP. It appears there are issues with SP2 involving the video graphics card and the sound. Now I'm stuck. I thought that if I chose "do not use this device" under "Device usage" on the display adaptor tab, that it would pick the right adaptor.
Anyway, my screen went blank and I tried to reboot in safe mode and it sticks at mup.sys. I disabled mup and it now sticks at "nid" something or other.
I use "Windows Narrator" to try and reenable the adaptor but I think the reinstall or the SP2 killed my sound.
Is there a way to reenable VGA adaptor from the command prompt in recovery mode?
I recently ran my windows update and downloaded all necisary files but when I finally got to actually getting SP2 an so on . For some reason the firewall for it won't turn on and I've done what's told me to do but nothing I can't get it up and going
View 3 Replies View RelatedOnce again the computer impaired one comes to the table of knowledge.I shut down my PC, fans stop, lights go out. About 6-8 mins later it starts up again, been doing this for four days now. I ran a virus scan which came out clean. The only way to keep it turned off is to unplug it. The only tinkering I've done lately is to try to open a port on my router which I didn't get done, forgot password and reset button doesn't work. I don't think my PC is set to hibernate, I have never used that feature.

Then I hit the one on the computer about 10 times as well. This is getting annoying and its really agitating when you think you've turned it off and when you come back its on.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy problem with this computer is that every time the computer is turn on it freezes at any time... but then i turn it off and back on and i hit Delete and load the Fail-Safe Mode bios and save it then restart the computer it works fine... but then i cant turn off the computer because it would freeze... I have all software and bios with the latest updates but still i get the problem i have restart Windows Xp and still have the problem... Whenever I plug into a LCD projector and activate my external monitor the
dual monitor feature comes on and I cannot disable it.
Some times I want to run dual monitor with the laptop (such as for
lectures), however, sometimes I want what appears on the laptop screen to be
the same as on the projected image.
I have tried going into the Display Properties and Settings to disable the
second monitor and when I do all that happens is that I go back to only
seeing my laptop's monitor and nothing on the projector. When I activate
the external monitor the dual monitor feature kicks on again.
It never used to do this and I am not sure what changed on my system.

View 4 Replies View RelatedPc had win98 installed. With the pc came a support cd for my ASRock mobo. I installed the cd and installed 4 in 1 drivers, no problem. However it wrote over my existing drivers for my modem and graphic card. I read the manual and it read that this mobo was designed specifically for XP. So I formatted my hard drive and installed XP pro, without a hitch. However it did not detect my modem.
It detect everythig else There wasn't a list to chose from. I went to a web site and d/loaded proper driver from the info off my modem. The problem was I couldn't load to floppy cause the file was 2.44 mbs. So here's where the stupid in me comes to play. I removed the hard drive from my old pc and installed to my new one, but of course it did not boot, no screen, nadda. I reversed my screw up, and my pc still does not boot
whenever i Hibernate My System and then Turn it BACK ON, IT HALTS AFTER COMPLETING THE LOADING OF "RESUMING WINDOWS", Then Nothing Happens. This sucking problem was with my AthlonXP-2400+, with totally different components(but the running Programs are same --- My Friend has the SAME SYSTEM AND SAME RUNNING PROGRAMS like I DO,They have no problem). I thought it was of my IDE-HDD.
