Can I At Least Turn The Volume Down
May 16, 2004
Is there anyway I can stop the beeper sounding when I do something wrong, such as trying to move the cursor upwards in Word pad when it's already at the top of the file. Or can I at least turn the volume down?I can't see any volume control on my newly acquired machine. Waiting for that hooter to go off is driving me nuts.

I have a game that I play sometimes. I downloaded it from a very reliable site as I have 3 or 4 other games from the same site that have always worked fine. On this particular game, every once and a while it will freeze up on me and the only way to get out is to manually turn off my pc and then turn it back on again. When I turn it back on my pc does some kind of a scan and tells me that the NTFS volume is dirty. I have never seen this term used before. I am running a Dell with Windows XP sp2. What is a NTFS volume? What does this mean and what do I need to do? I have Avast antivirus and Armor 2 Net firewall and 2 different antispyware programs running.

i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of msn m. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by Internet, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m.

I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

Okay so I usually leave my computer on all the time. I went to bed and when I got up it was off and couldn't get it to turn on. So I assumed it might be the power supply so I went and bought a new one from stamples. He turned on for maybe 5 seconds then turned off. so I took it back thinking maybe I didn't have enough watts. The higher watts didn't doanything. I am lost without my computer can anyone help? I have Win XP..Could it be the fan? Even though the fan worked when i plugged in first PS...Second didnt do anything. Could it be something to do with motherboard?

So i was trying to make some room on y C drive and i guess i deleted some files that i shouldn't To make a long story short now my volume control thingy that stays on my taskbar has dissapeared. When i go to the control panel and to sounds and audio devices and i get in there and there is an icon with the option to place volume icon on the taskbar but when i click on that i get 'windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed. After several tries i figured i deleted the windows file soundvol32.exe but how the hell do i get it back and put it in its right place?I have no idea where it would go? Anybody have an idea how i can install that back? I tried using my windows cd but since i put service pack 2 on it it said that the version of windows i had on the cd was older than my current version.

While exiting a game I had a system freeze and had to shut my computer down (pulled the plug). Upon restart I got the message "the volume is dirty" and check disk ran. Is this something I should be concerned about? I think I found the right log for it in the event viewer "Winlogon, event 1001" but don't understand whats written in it. Can anyone help me out here? Tell me what a dirty volume is, tell me if there is anything of concern in the log, tell me if I should let it concern me or not?

For some strange reason, my volume keeps getting muted. When I open the VOLUME CONTROL, the MUTE ALL box is checked, so I uncheck it. Then, a little while later it happens again. This had been going on for about a week now and it's very frustrating. Especially when you're in the middle of a game or spomething and all of a sudden, theres no sound.

Situation: Had MS Natural Keyboard Pro PS2 with the media keys working just fine. Problem... it's a white keyboard and all my stuff is now black or silver. Okay, get a new keyboard, MS Wireless Natural Keyboard. Uninstalled and reinstalled old/new software. ONly problem, the new keyboard can't control volume up/down. It can mute/unmute and all other special keys work.
where the link is that ties those keys in to the main volume control in registery. Here's something interesting: If I plug the old PS2 keyboard in, no drivers, XP recoginizes and all media keys work fine on it including volume. If I keep both keyboards installed simultaneously they both work fine and control everything EXCEPT the new one can't raise/lower the volume, just mute.

I can close it by right clicking its 'bubble' on the taskbar, and selecting close.I just can't see it when its open, and i cant figure out why.I have tried restarting the computer, and reinstalling the sound card drivers. Can i reinstall the volume control in XP, like you can in 98?

It would not let me delete C: because it said there were files that were needed for the setup, arent they supposed to be on the disk? IT didnt.. and i now have 2000 and XP installed and i dont wanna multiboot. I tried going run the format c:, but it wouldnt let me heres wat it said: Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. WOuld you like to force a dismount on this volume y/n. If put y or n it just closes either way. What do i do??? Im new this. This was going to be the first time id reformat.

i am using xp home on an hp pc (therefore no recovery discs). after a blackout, i got the unmountable boot volume blue screen. i have searched the forums, talked to hp and got the same answers. the problem is none of them work.i cannot restart in safe mode or last good configuration. a friend made the 6 xp set up floppy disks for me and theat gets me into the repair and once there, chkdsk does not work. i have tried both /p and /r and both times i get the message: autochk.exe could not be located in either the startup directory or the cdrom drive.type the full path <including drive letter> for the location of autochk.exe

I installed Audigy sound card on my Pentium III 550 MHz, OS is XP. Sound is OK, media player, Power DVD etc are working fine. I have a TV tuner card and a program called TVR installed for watching TV. Ever since Audigy is installed when I turn on the TVR progrm the Line-in on volume control panel gets muted. I de-selected the Mute to enable Line-in. OK, it worked. Every time I restart the PC and if I run TVR I have to de-select the Mute button again.

So I try to go to my Volume Control and get this message:"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close." When I go to my Sounds And Audio Devices Properties, the tabs labled Volume, Audio, and Voice will not even highlight. The buttons that is, nothing works, they're all disabled or something.I guess I'm just having all kinds of problems with this new Windows installation.
