View 6 RepliesI'm not sure what exactly happened. But anyways, here's the story. I was browsing the internet on sites I usually go to (gamespot, rapbattles, ign, etc) and then a TV show I wanted to watch came on. So I closed the internet (nothing was opened) and left it on the desktop as I watched TV. Then when the show was over, completely off. And I didn't shut it off! So then I powered it up, and it sat at the little windows xp loading screen, and just kept loading... and loading, and my computer was making a weird noise. So I turned it off via button. And turned it back on a few minutes later, and it went to this screen and said "Windows had a problem starting up" or something like that. And it gave a few options,
3 of them were Safe Mode (2 Safe mode options had something after it, not sure what
I have a strange intermittant noise coming from my computer speakers. I have never noticed it before and am running pretty much the same software I always have. The best way I can discribe it is a high pitched tickling of the ivorys. I only hear it about once an hr. Short only 3-4 notes
View 2 Replies View Relatedi would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of msn m. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by Internet, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m.

View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot up my PC I hear a distortion noise that starts at the windows Welcome screen and continues on for about a minute after the desktop is onscreen. This only happens on complete boots, not restarts, and I never hear the distortion again even if my PC is running for hours upon hours.Even weirder, I can seem to effect that distortion noise with my mouse, altering the sound by moving it around and rolling the mouse wheel.I also hear the distortion on the Welcome screen at a boot when I move my mouse cursor over the User Account icons. Move the cursor over an Icon, loud distortion noise, move it away no noise.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIn the past few days my mouse makes a clicking noise like it is a Windows assigned noise. It does it at random times, sometimes when I click, sometimes on its own. I checked the Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. All sounds I checked were not the sound I am hearing. I turned off some of them anyway. But I am sure these sounds are not coming from t here. I also looked at the Mouse settings and couldn't find anything to turn a click noise on or off there. I have XP Pro, Maxthon Browser with Spoofbar plug-in, Zonealarm, SBC Yahoo Antivirus and an annoying clicking noise!
View 8 Replies View RelatedI turned on my computer and everything was fine, but realized husband had unplugged the dsl last night due to possible incoming storms. So I replugged in the dsl and as usual when this happens have to reboot my computer to get it to realize its there. So I went to start ..shut down..restart and did it. And it never came back. After about 5 min of it just sitting there I went ahead and pushed in the restart button on the machine. It makes its usual start up noise and the lights all come on except now there is a strange clicking noise I do not recognize and the cd rom seems to hang a bit, then the lights go off (as usual) except for the power light. But nothing comes up on the screen and no sounds are to be heard from the speakers. I now shut it all down and let it sit for about 20 min then retry still nothing. So I open the case up and check all the wires and with a can of air blow away any dust.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem that just started about 2 days ago. My computer, XP home edn., will be working fine, and then I suddenly hear a little squeak coming from the computer, kinda like something being pulled over a pulley and then bang, the whole thing just freezes up on me.So I'll hold the power button to shut it down, start it back up again and sometimes it'll come right back up, like normal. Other times, it'll make that noise again during the start up and it'll just freeze at whatever screen it's at. I just took it in yesterday b/c at the start up screen it was saying something like cannot boot from CD. insert system CD when it was at the very start, saying how much memory and system, etc.The guy said something was just loose, fixed it, and then it worked fine. But it just started up again, with the whole squeak-freeze deal.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using my Compaq laptop last night (unfortunately I'm at work and do not have any further identifying info on it...other than it's probably at least 3, closer to 4, years old) and it was fine. I walked away from it for less than 5 mins, when I came back, it was off - no lights, no display, no noise, no nothing. and it would not turn back on. I turned it on again this morning, which it did fine, but after less than 2 minutes (if even that long), it said it was 'preparing to stand by', but never actually reached that stage, instead it just shut off again. Throughout this time it was plugged in. I left it plugged in, but then removed the battery (thinking it might be dead), but still, nothing. Now it won't even turn on - battery or not, plugged in or not.

View 8 Replies View RelatedOn the system startup, my speakers suddenly produced a high pitched beeping noise. I've tried using a different set of speakers, but the result was the same. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong, but I had recently installed a more updated video driver and a wireless keyboard/mouse. I've tried uninstalling both the video driver and the wireless set (switching back to the old keyboard and mouse), but there was still the beeping noise. Surprisingly, when I mute the master volume the beeping noise stops. Also, the noise applies only to the input speaker (the speaker which has the cable connecting to the computer) and not the other one. I am able to listen to music using the other speaker, but the volume is drastically lowered. My guess was that there was something interfering (such as the wireless mouse and keyboard) with the sound card(?), but since I have uninstalled them (now using again because it is obviously not the problem) and there were no changes, I have no idea what could possibly be wrong.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen i try to download torrents or stream videos, my PC suddenly makes a crackling noise and freezes my computer beyond anything i can do as the mouse will no longer function, the only way to get rid of this is to turn the computer off via the power switch.
Does anybody know a general solution to this or tell me a way i can find the errors that are causing this problem and give you feedback?
Recovering from a nasty virus, used several different programs to get rid of virus. Had a few different error messages coming up after that but i was able to fix them by doing some research. The only problem remaining is now after about 15-20 mins of using the computer the desktop icons and taskbar start disapearing and re-appearing, starts slowly then constant flashing in and out accompanied by an error noise (its the same noise you hear if you press enter over and over again) that becomes constant too until the desktop is completely blank at which point I have to restart the computer.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo i was trying to make some room on y C drive and i guess i deleted some files that i shouldn't To make a long story short now my volume control thingy that stays on my taskbar has dissapeared. When i go to the control panel and to sounds and audio devices and i get in there and there is an icon with the option to place volume icon on the taskbar but when i click on that i get 'windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed. After several tries i figured i deleted the windows file soundvol32.exe but how the hell do i get it back and put it in its right place?I have no idea where it would go? Anybody have an idea how i can install that back? I tried using my windows cd but since i put service pack 2 on it it said that the version of windows i had on the cd was older than my current version.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy prob is a bit of a saga I defragged my Win XP Media PC a few days ago and then I noticed a clicking noise coming from the hard drive, I called PC servicecall managed to find a freephone number and the chap suggested I do a scandisk, he said to call back with the diagnosis later.
After the PC did two scandisks I managed to stop it when it was about to do a 3rd, I rebooted the PC and it loaded with no 'start' button or clock on the taskbar, so I rebooted. Then I got a message saying 'it can't load as a file was missing or corrupt windows/system32/configuration/system' it said to put in the original CD and type 'r' to repair.
Well the PC didn't come with any CD's and I only have one that I made after I'd had the PC for a month - a recovery disk.
So I called PC Servicecall back and told the guy what happened and I've got another harddrive arriving tomorrow - trouble is I need to get the info from my hard drive before I send it back to them.
I've looked at MS support site and there's options to do a manual repair (I'll copy and paste info here)
Method 1: Replace the SYSTEM Hive
Method 2: Restore the SYSTEM File from the SYSTEM.ALT Backup File
Method 3: Reduce the Size of the SYSTEM File
Method 4: Restore the SYSTEM Hive from Backup
Which all sound hunky dorey but I don't have any original bootable CD (the PC doesn't have a floppy drive), so I can't type 'r' to repair!!!!
In my possesion I do have an XP Pro CD, a Win2000 CD and a Win98 CD - my question is can I use these other CD's to try a 'repair' and get into the 'manual' area to try the methods above (the OS is Win Media Edition on the PC)?
my xp software is fake as i am always reminded of by the computer, but the problem is that now, everything is comparitively slower, even for the computer to fully boot takes about 6 minutes and cpu always makes a loud an annoying noise which i think is from the fans. i want to know if the slower rate and the noise is a hardware problem or if the two are caused by two different problems

My screensaver will not turn on after a period of inactivity like it is supposed to. If I go into properties>Screensaver and set the "Wait" time to 5 and press "OK", in 5 five minutes the screensaver will come on. However, if I move the mouse and wait another five minutes the screensaver does not activate. It will only activate once per time you set its properties.

I'm really at a loss for words. For some odd reason, every now and again, I hear what sounds like the first second of the Linkin Park song Crawling. No idea where it's coming from. All of my mp3 players could be running or not and I've heard it. I've checked to make sure that if I had any browsers open, that there wasn't any kind of annoying flash advertisement doing it. I've updated my AVG Anti-Virus and ran that as well as AVG-Anti Spyware but I still hear the midi.
