SP2 Desktop Not Loading After Log-on (explorer.exe)?
Apr 19, 2007
I haven't been able to. Before re-formating my notebook, I would like to exhaust all possibilities. After login I see my desktop background image, then the taskbar flashes once and that is it. No desktop, no taskbar, no icons. I can use the task manager to run most programs, so I tried antivirus, adremovers, etc. That didnt help. Then I tried a system restore, but i get this message saying system restore could not load files from the points I had set as restore points.

I've been smacking my head against this problem for about a week now. No one I know seems to have the answer either. I was asked to clean up a computer for a friend of my mother's. It had over 3,000 virus, ad, spy, etc. (I have it repeatedly testing clean now). When the system came to me it took well over 10 minutes to boot into Windows (Win XP Home, SP1) but once Ad-aware and Spybot started removing things it no longer boots all the way into windows. After selecting a user (any user) it loads the wallpaper but not the desktop icons or taskbar. CTRL + ALT + DEL shows that nothing is frozen and if I click "New task" then type "explorer" everything loads up just fine. I've tried a system repair, restore, and upgrade. I think it's definitely time for a fresh install but I'd like to know how to fix this without a reinstall if that is possible (especially in case I ever come across this again.)

Hard drive crash, transplanted HD to new computer which now has 2 hard drives, C & D. Problem is I cannot open Windows Explorer from desktop or any other location, from either drive. I get a message that says it "generates errors." And that it is keeping a log, presumably for use on some Day of Judgment. (I get around it for now by right-clicking My Computer and picking Explore from the pop-up menu.)I have gone to the usual download sites in search of WE, no dice.

Every time I open a new IE window it doesn't load for 10 mins or so. Once it's loaded my internet works fine. I've ran AVG and found nothing, if there's anything else I can do or have overlooked.

My XP Pro freezes thoroughly, mouse and keyboard in place, and the machine appears to be in a coma. I must power down to get out of it.The freeze may take place while the desktop is loading, or it may wait for me to do a few thinks, but it doesn't take long. If I boot in safe mode with network it doesn't freeze. If I boot in other than safe mode, when the cursor is left at center screen (after loading my info) it takes several minutes to finish loading systray, desktop, etc.

When I use Juno on my HP it stops responding while loading its homepage. I can end the program now. Click on Internet Explorer and continue in the Internet. But then come the problem. About a half hour after I close the Internet Explorer. My machine freezes. I pull the plug plug it back in and it boots up like nothing happens. I have a dual boot on this machine. Just put in Linspire about two weeks ago because of this
problem. Juno works fine under Linspire. So I know it is not Juno nor HP so it has to be with Windows XP.

Out of nowhere when I log into Windows, it loads the wallpaper but refuses to load the rest of the desktop (start menu, desktop icons, etc.). The only way I can browse the computer is by opening the task manager and running a new task (opening the C drive).

I was working when my system seemed to go a bit crazy, bunch of windows opened up and told me that my virus protection was not working etc.. I closed them all and ran a quick scan with Symtec to see if I had somehow picked up a virus. Decided to reboot. When I restarted the computer I had this strange circle going on. It goes thru a normal bootup, and when it is loading the tray, it starts going in a circle. Starts loading up programs and then restarts and then restarts etc. Most of the time, after 3 or 4 times it ends with just the wall paper visable. Now, at this point the computer seems ok, I can run most any program by starting them in Task Manager ( applications, new task etc...). In fact that is how I signed up for this forum and wrote the note. BUT I cannot get the desktop back. The only way is to run Windows Explorer, via task manager, then you get it back, but it does the circle thing continously. IF you can get a program started during the part of the circle where icons etc are visable, then it will run. SO, I tried doing a restore, went back one day and ran the restore. Seemed to run normally. BUT the symptoms are the same ( now it was close to midnight, so I should have gone back farther). NOW, when I tried to go and do another restore, to go back farther, the restore program runs normally, except it will not let me choose a day. Shows many possible days and the help runs etc.. the buttons "push" but nothing happens.

I've run across an unusual (to me) boot problem and it is frustrating. You'd think after more than 20 years of working with (and building my own) computers, I'd have seen just about everything, but this is a new one for me.I'm running XP with SP2 installed. I won't install SP3 because I've seen it cause too much trouble on other systems and won't subject mine (or myself) to that mess. I'm not a big Windows fan (and each new version leaves me less of a fan). I learned computers on a CPM system then promptly fell in love with DOS and still prefer it.
I developed a freeze problem about a week ago. When it continued on a daily basis, I started uninstalling software, starting with the most-recently installed. The freeze problem worsened. Eventually the system would begin to load XP, but in the process of loading my desktop items, it would reboot. Got caught in a vicious reboot cycle for a bit. Wouldn't even stabilize long enough for me to disable my desktop items and wouldn't allow me to boot to Safe Mode.Eventually, chkdsk would run (on startup) through steps 1 and 2. Step 3 would show "unspecified error", and XP would boot. Unsuccessfully.

My IE7's been running really slow starting this past week. I don't know what the cause is exactly. I can't figure out if it's the IE software on the PC or if it has something to do with the internet connection. I've run the following to diagnose my problem: NAV 2007 - No Viruses Webroos SpySweeper - No Spyware Optonline speedcheck Utility (when I can get it to run) - the results are very good 13-15mbps down and ~1.5mbps up. I would've posted this last night, but I couldn't get the page to load and even the optonline homepage sometimes wouldn't load. Also, I've noticed that images aren't loading onto the web pages. Just getting a box with an "x" in it. Don't remember if that is an IE security setting that i just need to allow or a an invasion to my system. I reset the IE7 settings to clear anything within IE, but that just made me lose my settings and IE still ran slow and inconsistently. I've checkd the ADD/Remove list and the list of folders within the program files folder and I've found nothing bad has been installed on the sly. Not really sure if this is a problem with optonline's signal or if I've gotten something on my PC that just isn't getting found by NAV and spysweeper. I'm trying to hold off on restoring my system image file, but if I must. I'd like totry to diagnose this if I can.

I just cleaned out a slightly infection of spyware and viruses on this computer and everything looks nice a clean but unfortunately there seems to be some residual problems. My startup is much slower, the 'loading your personal settings' can take upwards of 2 minutes. But, it can by by-passed by hitting ctrl-alt-del. Once I get to the desktop I notice that Norton Anti-Virus is disabled and it stays disabled until the icons load which ALSO takes another 2-3 minutes. I can open programs and they run fine but I am unable select anything on the desktop or right click on it.
I've never had slowdown like this on here before. It also only seems to be happening on this one windows account, the other ones load up much faster. I've cleaned it the best I can running all the normal apps and some other cleaners. Even tried restoring the desktop back to the windows xp default appearance.

I believe there has been a small HD problem, the result is that when I boot up, it goes thru normally till it loads the desktop. The wall paper shows up and it starts loading the tray with its programs. During that load, it stop, re-loads the wall paper and starts loading the tray again... sometimes it stops and just has the wall paper up with no icons. When in this state, you can run any program by bringing up task manager and running it in "applications" "new task". I have found that I can run almost any program by getting to the "start" menu fast enough during the time it is loading.I have run a chkdsk in read only mode and it reports errors during phase 2. I can put the PC into the "circle" mode if it is sitting still with the wallpaper by running Windows Explorer. I have tried doing a system restore, went back one day and it seemed to restore, but nothing changed - and - now I cannot do another restore. It shows restore points as available, but when I press on their date nothing happens. The rest of the restore programs responds normally.I hesitate to run chkdsk in repair mode since it might leave the computer useless and it is the way I am writing for this help ! I assume there are some sectors that include WINXp that are bad. It all started while I was online and the PC went a little nuts, I shut it down after a quick scan with Symantec anti virus ( thinking I may have picked up a baddie). The scan showed nothing. The symptoms started on the first reboot.

I tried searching for this topic but I didn't find anything, though it may be that I didn't look carefully enough. What's happening is that Windows Explorer has recently been making my desktop icons disappear, and in some cases my taskbar as well. When I open the program, particularly when I have removable media connected, my desktop icons revert to the placeholder image, and gradually the correct images return to each. It can take some time for all the icons to return to normal. Additionally, when I close Windows Explorer, the desktop icons vanish altogether, and wherever they go, the take the taskbar with them. The wallpaper remains completely untouched. Any open windows I have will remain onscreen and responsive, infact while I'm waiting for the return of my taskbar I can browse the Web to pass the time. But if I minimize a window that's it until the return of my taskbar, which usually occurs within 5 minutes or less, along with the gradual return of all the icons as described above. My system scans clean for malware, and Norton's WinDoctor doesn't find anything. Any suggestions? This is, at the very least, inconvenient, if not downright worrisome. I'd feel better if I knew whether it was even normal.

I got a new motherboard installed because my old one fried itself and the pc was reformatted and windows was reinstalled. Since then, it was working fine. The start-up time had also lowered considerably and it was working perfectly for once. One thing that's been happening for a while, my computer started taking longer to start-up. I figured it was just all the programs etc I have installed. Then, I have this one external drive that I got connected internally. There were times where it wouldn't recognize this drive; it wouldn't show up on My Computer. Otherwise, it was perfectly fine. one of my most important drives (E) has been missing for the last 2 days. it hasn't shown up even once and i'm really worried i've lost data and need to recover it.

I am missing everything from my desktop except for the background pic. The only way I can open programs and files is to go through the Windows Task manager and open them individually. While trying to fix the problem, I noticed explorer.exe is no where to be found. Has anyone ever heard of this problem and if so, is there any way to fix it without having to reload windows or do a system repair?

I turned on my comp to find a blank desktop. The wallpaper appears but there is no taskbar and no desktop icons. This is the same for each user on the system. I was able to start the task manager and run a command prompt from there which allowed me to run some programs but not windows explorer. My system restore also seems to have been turned off and all restore points removed.
I managed to run a virus check with AVG free edition which detected an executable file 'charlie.exe' in the my pictures folder for two of the users saying they were trojans 'trojan horse backdoor.generic8.fjs'. AVG deleted these but, as I suspected, did not cure the problem. I have also run adaware but this never detected anything other than a handful of tracking cookies. I have downloaded Hijack this V2.0.0, but will wait for advice before posting a log.

I am seeing a number of problems related to windows explorer:Explorer won't start from the desktop icon. Selecting it from Accessories simply returns you to the desktop. My desktop is messed up. It displays a background plus 3 items in the column down the left side - "System Tasks", "Other Places", and "Details". Previously it was just a desktop with icons. I moved the contents of "My Documents" from my "C" drive to the E drive (different partition) in case the partition was failing, but yesterday the E version of MY Documents disappeared. I'd like to get these back. Before the folder disappeared, I would open it and see a treeview of all the subfolders. Immediately afterwards, starting at the top of the tree, the "+" would all disappear, just leaving folders. Also, some of the folders were white, not yellow. I suspect the situation is a combination of screwed up privileges and registry problems, but I'm not sure where to start.

Whenever I start my PC, 90 percent of the time it loads to the desktop but explorer.exe wont run. If I start Task Manager and run it from there, for the first few minutes an error pops up saying I don't have admin rights to access the file, but then later on it runs ok. But then, when it does load, only the volume control will load on the start bar, and if I try to access anything, (internet etc.) it doesnt work at all. Also my Folder Options in the Control Panel have disappeared, and Ive tried many ways to get it back, such as running gpedit, and it also wont let me access the registry, saying I dont have admin rights, even though I am the only user of the PC, and I have full admin rights. Sometimes it won't load at all, just booting to a black screen with the pointer stuck in the middle, and I have to restart it to get it to do anything.
If I run the computer in safe mode, the explorer bar has a 50/50 chance of loading on startup, and I still have the same problems. I ran Webroot Spy Sweeper, which picked a few spy cookies and whatnot, but nothing significant, but it seems to be getting progressively worse every time I restart the PC.The PC also refuses to boot the XP startup disk, cos I wanted to Repair Windows to see if that would fix the problem, and also trying to reset to default with BIOS and using MSCONFIG didnt work either. Im pretty sure Im forgetting something else that was quite important, but I cant remember what it is.... also System Restore has been wiped clean, so I cant restore my PC to an earlier time... I tried running a Virus scan using Virgin Media antivirus and Webroot Spy Sweeper Deep System Scan, but no luck, both just picked up minore spy cookie and stuff

I have about 80 computers running in a domain environment. All are winxp pro sp2 or better. The server in Windows 2003 sp2. What I've been experiencing is when a user logs in sometimes explorer doesn't start. Its very random. I can't find a pattern. I just have the user ctrl-atl-del, log off and log back in and all is fine. We are running Symantec AV 10.2 (10.1.7.7000 is what is installed on each pc). I know this is the cause of the problem because of 2 reasons. I uninstalled Symantec AV and the issue disappeared. Also I just upgraded one client from SAV 10.2 to SEP11 and the same thing just started to happen with them. I know others on the net have uncounted the same thing but I have yet seen the fix.
