I got a dell laptop (inspiron 6000) and windows xp media center about a year ago. Since a month or so, most of the time windows is done booting, all i can see is my desktop picture and nothing else. Everything is accessible only via task manager (running firefox.exe, explorer.exe...)Only once out of 7-10 times will it start up normally. I have no idea what this is all about or how to find out.
View 1 RepliesAfter running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.
Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).
Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.
Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.
The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.
I can of course make a shortcut to IE on the desktop. But how do you put the IE icon, not the shortcut on there. I see you can right click eg My Computer and place that on desktop - but how to do so for IE?
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen i try and start it up, it doesnt have video all the time. the computer starts as if it is alright, but there is no video. if i leave it off, and unplug it for a few minutes, it will start up and have video. but it will only start up after being left alone and off for a few minutes. and i am wondering if the video card is now glitched.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe SHIFT key was pressed too long and we got into the Swift Key feature somehow. We got out of it by exiting the application. However, now everytime we start the computer, key strokes don't appear on the screen. You have to hold down the SHIFT key until it makes a sound and then you can type characters and they are displayed on the screen. It is irritating to start the computer and not be able to type anything.
There is probably a switch that was set that I can't find. How can I get rid of this "feature?" PC is Laptop Dell 2600 Inspiron running XP Home.
My computer doesn't recognize USB ports upon startup. When I turn it on, it says Floppy diskette seek failure, and I have to press F1 to continue or F2. It's always said that... and my mouse lights up and my key board lights up fine... but when I press F1 and it goes to the Windows loading screen, the lights powers off and the keyboard doesn't work.. and I can't use my mouse or keyboard when it reaches my login screen.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have G speedbooster router and setup MAC address and WPA with password. My laptop can access fine. I have emachines t2882 with xp and USB wireless g speedbooster adapter. I can access internet when plugging in computer lan to lan on router. When using wireless usb, I key in code and says I am connected and green lights show, but when pulling up explorer, it says no connected? Device manager shows device is working properly.I tried setting up automatically assign IP's on the computer and got same result, and put in specific IP I have assigned from the router to this computer with same results as well.Again, looks like I am connected, but explorer does not seem to recognize I am connected.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI thought I had it solved before, but it isn't. I do not know why my cd-r and cd-rw do not show in Windows Explorer. Only the floppy disk does. My cd drives do show in my computer and I seem to have fixed it in the send to list, but checking Windows Explorer they still are not there. They seem to work fine. I have Windows XP Home, Sp 2. I have Roxio Easy CD Creator installed but never use it except to erase a cd. I have Spyware Doctor and Norton Internet Security 2006. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't make any difference though

Window explorer doesn't show it as external device.I uninstall the USB mass storage driver from device manager several times but window doesn't display the HD in window explorer.

When I open windows explorer (xp home) to view files and folders it is not showing me all of them. For example, under c:documents and settings it does not show "local settings..." and all the subfolders. And, when I installed Office it created an install cache folder but it doesn't show that either. How do I turn it on to show all? There is no prompt to "show hidden files". its probably something real simple that I am overlooking.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a mp3 player (sandisk express) that connects to my lap top by usb. I think my kids have uninstalled something recently as the lap top no longer recognises the mp3 player ie. it wont show up in explorer as a drive and no longer turns on and starts charging when it is connected.The problem doesnt seem to be with the mp3 player as it works fine on my desk top. I have tried refreshing it in the device manager but that didnt work.I traced the location of the driver file on my desk top and the same file resides on my lap top in same location. So I have no idea why the mp3 player wont work on the lap top.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.

When I try to open one, it can take upwards of 20 minutes to do so, then response within the program is no better. H i have an old 80gb drive that i wish to use for storage by use of a hard drive enclosure. It had an old xp installed on it which ino longer wish to use, but when i hook it up to the pc the drive doesn't show up, i mounted the drive on a linux(ubuntu) system and managed to delete everything except the windows folder, i believe the ntfs file system is stopping it from being deleted, my question is how can i delete the windows folder so that i can format and reuse the drive without putting it into the pc, any further info needed will be duly supplied

I have a directory containing 4000 JPGs (no, clean JPGs before youask). Anytime I select a folder within this directory, it takes 30seconds to display either the thumbnail page, or about the same time tolookup the icon for each file in 'List details' mode.
