I have a mp3 player (sandisk express) that connects to my lap top by usb. I think my kids have uninstalled something recently as the lap top no longer recognises the mp3 player ie. it wont show up in explorer as a drive and no longer turns on and starts charging when it is connected. The problem doesnt seem to be with the mp3 player as it works fine on my desk top. I have tried refreshing it in the device manager but that didnt work.I traced the location of the driver file on my desk top and the same file resides on my lap top in same location. So I have no idea why the mp3 player wont work on the lap top.
H i have an old 80gb drive that i wish to use for storage by use of a hard drive enclosure. It had an old xp installed on it which ino longer wish to use, but when i hook it up to the pc the drive doesn't show up, i mounted the drive on a linux(ubuntu) system and managed to delete everything except the windows folder, i believe the ntfs file system is stopping it from being deleted, my question is how can i delete the windows folder so that i can format and reuse the drive without putting it into the pc, any further info needed will be duly supplied
I thought I had it solved before, but it isn't. I do not know why my cd-r and cd-rw do not show in Windows Explorer. Only the floppy disk does. My cd drives do show in my computer and I seem to have fixed it in the send to list, but checking Windows Explorer they still are not there. They seem to work fine. I have Windows XP Home, Sp 2. I have Roxio Easy CD Creator installed but never use it except to erase a cd. I have Spyware Doctor and Norton Internet Security 2006. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't make any difference though
My win XP pro doesn't recognize my USB 400GB WD external HD.The PC detected it the first time however on subsequent connection, it only detect it as mass storage device. Window explorer doesn't show it as external device.I uninstall the USB mass storage driver from device manager several times but window doesn't display the HD in window explorer.
I had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E: , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day.
I know this is probably a very simple fix but I can't seem to remember it. When I open windows explorer (xp home) to view files and folders it is not showing me all of them. For example, under c:documents and settings it does not show "local settings..." and all the subfolders. And, when I installed Office it created an install cache folder but it doesn't show that either. How do I turn it on to show all? There is no prompt to "show hidden files". its probably something real simple that I am overlooking.
On the microsoft update website, it asks me to install the active X control to use the update. But the information bar never appears so i can't get any further. I've reinstalled IE6 but that still doesn't work.
At work we have so many network drives and in a recent upgrade to xp, the drive letters are showing up at the very end of the drive description. In certain applications, you only get to see a short portion of the beginning of the drive info and with the complex naming schemes we have, it is difficult to remember what's what and hard to tell the difference with just the beginning showing. It's very easy to remember what we've designated as K or N or P for example. Any way to switch these letters back to the beginning?

I can of course make a shortcut to IE on the desktop. But how do you put the IE icon, not the shortcut on there. I see you can right click eg My Computer and place that on desktop - but how to do so for IE?
I got a dell laptop (inspiron 6000) and windows xp media center about a year ago. Since a month or so, most of the time windows is done booting, all i can see is my desktop picture and nothing else. Everything is accessible only via task manager (running firefox.exe, explorer.exe...)Only once out of 7-10 times will it start up normally. I have no idea what this is all about or how to find out.
I've noticed that the dot-url part of the file name does not show in Windows Explorer for web link files/shortcuts even though I have Explorer set to show the entire name, including extensions. Why is this exception made in Windows Explorer to only this one extension?
I know you can either hover over a folder in Explorer or right click, click properties and get the folder size - but what I want is a fix or utility that allows me to see multiple folders, ala Explorer, and see their size displayed - the way it does for individual files on the DETAILS setting
Doing a search reveals that both my C drive and E drive (Maxtor external hard drive) have the folder Application Data.I have chosen under Folder Options to allow all files to be shown. Indeed, all files appear for the C drive, but not all appear on the E drive. What can I do to have to do to view the E drive hidden files?
I have a directory containing 4000 JPGs (no, clean JPGs before youask). Anytime I select a folder within this directory, it takes 30seconds to display either the thumbnail page, or about the same time tolookup the icon for each file in 'List details' mode.
I have just installed XP replacing Win 2k.I like to have my favorites in my order and not alphabetically. I drag and drop to that order, but, every time I shut down and boot up, the software rearranges the favorites to alpha order.

Currently using XP Pro, SP2 with P4 3.2, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD (90% free). While using explorer to open a folder and display the files in it, the illustrator (ai) files (hundreds of it in one folder) were shown with the generic/windows system icons first and gradually been transform to the Illustrator files icon. The process took so long and made a system in hold/freeze. It happens as well when tried open files using File Open in Adobe Illustrator or Design in the very same folder and files. I've tried solve it using Display Appearance Effect as well as using regedit to modify the value on Max Cached Icons in registry but didn't work.
I have the following problem: Explorer doesn`t show any details for any media file type like artist or album, when choosing Details view. Additionally, clicking on file properties doesn`t show any info either, nor simple, nor in advanced view. The files are fine, and other software reads the media file info correctly, including WMP 11 and Winamp.
how to make a laserdisc player so that, when connected to an XP machine, it appears as a drive? What cables do you need, device drivers, etc. Where do you get them? Can you play your laserdiscs using this connection so the content of the laserdisc appears on the computer monitor(e.g., Windows Media Player)?

Downloaded SP2 for Windows XP Home and immediately lost all video (not audio) in both Real Player and Windows Media Player. Removed each of these and reloaded "fresh" version - same problem. Then removed SP2 and presto - video returns.
I put in a new 2nd hard drive to my desktop, and when I start Windows XP, the drive does not show up under "Disk Management". This is the screen that comes up when you right click "My Computer", go to "Manage", and select "Disk Management". When I do this, there's a "Disk 0" for my original drive, and a "DVD-ROM" drive. But shouldn't there be a "Disk 1" for the 2nd drive? Is there some other driver that has to be installed for this? The drive did not come with an installation CD or anything. It's a Seagate 40gb SATA drive.
I just got the problem on this month 1. The DVD-rom (mapped drive D:) doesn't autoplay at all, when u remove the disc from the drive, the icon just stays there, but its empty. The only refresh as you reboot the computer. 2. The USB drive (mapped drive F:)doesn't show up at my computer. It'd detected by Adobe reader, and the USB is readable, but it just won't show up in "My Computer" also the list of choice to open the USB from autorun won't show up either. That's pretty gay. What i did: 1. tried mapping drives 2. NOD32 result- virus count:0 unscannable count:4 3. Adaware SE personal: spyware count: 2 (cleaned) 4. ctrl+alt+del check the running stuff by Administrator seems nothing special
I have two hard drives each divided into two partitions.I performed a clean install and repartitioned the C drive into C: and D:"My Computer" shows the C & D partitions correctly but does not show the second drive with it's partitions D: and E:In "Disk Management" of "Computer Management", my secondary drive is shown as Disk 0 and not being partitioned with all the GB combined.
I have recently been working on a VB6 Program which was meant to change the registry. After i had tested it, my laptop rebooted suddenly and i got an error saying: The following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM This is a real pain because i got my laptop off eBay and after a small child hammered the keyboard, the CD Drive Became Bust. I only have a 3.5Inch floppy drive and 10 floppy disks. It is quite old and it doesn't support USB booting When i try using a MS-DOS startup disk, it doesn't show my C: Drive
