I am using Windows XP Pro SP3. In the taskbar I used to have an icon to show the desktop when operating a program.The icon is still there but somehow the supporting file has disappeared.How do I get it back? The file is "Show desktop.scf" but it can't be found in any search I make.

The main problem is : In Control Panel / Folder option / View, i cant find the options related to "show hidden files". In this forum there is a solution already posted,but it didnt solve my problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was using the internet when suddenly the window closed and everything disappeared from my desktop (task bar, start button, desktop icons..everything leaving just the background). Didn't get any error messages or warnings either. I tried clicking on the desktop but got no response so I pressed ctrl, alt, delete, to restart. But when it restarted I got an empty desktop again and it wasn't until the 4th time restarting when everything was there again. I then opened internet explorer and it wouldn't respond. On the fifth time restarting, everything was fine but half an hour later I got the empty desktop again and had to restart 5 times again. Is this a virus? How to I get rid of this problem since it was running fine before this.

He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I guess he had a bunch on there that he needed, but couldn't find them. They weren't in the Recycle Bin and a file search didn't turn any of them up.

After restarting my computer, the desktop has disappeared. When I try to right click to bring up a menu, nothing happens. When I try to save a file to the desktop, it apparently does, but no icon shows up.I don't think it's a virus of any type (but what do I know!) because this computer has not been used in some time.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI went to log in the other day, using normal login and password.upon completing log-in process, I noticed my desktop looked completely different than normal (we normally stash dozens of icons right on desktop for quick access) - there were no icons there except for a couple standard shortcuts..Fearing all was lost, I quickly checked hard drive and saw that all our files were still there and functional (even in the desktop folder), but for some reason the desktop was not loading.Tried to open Outlook Express to check mail and could not access mail files or the internet It seems even though I used my normal login info, I was logged in as a different user and I suspect that's why desktop wasn't loading and I couldn't access email....I checked Documents and Settings - there is a new user folder (appeared out of nowhere as far as I can tell) with syntax of mynormalusername.L600-myfirstname.

Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.

I know this isn't wise, didn't realise she didn't know that.Recently computer was acting strange and a "professional" was called in who copied everything on her hard drive to an external drive, cleaned it out and installed 2000. It did something to my registry that now when i boot my computer i don't see any desktop icons on the desktop. All i see is the green windows background with the logo win xp home edition. i tried to get into the system restore by going thru the CTL + ALT+ Del then go in New Task and run to pop up the system restore point window. when i do that I get the system restore point window but the window is blank. No text no calender ( the usual restore point screen) to restore it to an earlier point. What do i do now.
View 14 Replies View RelatedWell, reciently I've discovered that my C:WindowsSystem32 folder is gone. Just gone. And it seems that any time a program tries to open something in that folder, it just pops up and says that the file is missing or whatnot.
1. The files are still there. I can access them through IE by typing in the dir in the address bar.
2. The folder is supposedly "Hidden," but I have it set to view all hidden files and folders.
My Paint file disappeared. It use to be listed under ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES but now it is nowhere to be found. It is useful to construct attachments. Can someone help me find it and place it in the START menu again.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy 'restore' has completely disappeared. I followed the advice given on in one of your forums, going to start/run/inf and then right clicking sr.inf and then install. I received a pop-up box asking for the file path (a path is already given, but it must not be correct) as well as a message stating I need to insert my xp service pack two cd and that I should then reboot. I did this, but I still receive the same pop-up and message. I don't know what path to type and obviously, when I rebooted, I didn't install anything. I tried to figure out how to extract just what I needed from the cd but I admit it, I'm a deer in the headlights.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I was using the computer when I got a BSOD which told me to restart if this is the first time I got this error so I restarted and everything went back to normal. I don't know if this is related to the problem I have now. Today I accidentally disconnected the computer from electricity and when I started it again I got an error message which said that the "<windows root>system 32hal.dll" file is missing or corrupted. I restarted the computer and got the same error again. I put the windows installation cd in the cd drive and chose Repair but it didn't ask me to choose a windows installation to fix and when I tried to find the hal.dll file in the windows folder using the command prompt I discovered that the entire WINDOWS folder was missing from the C: drive. (also, when I tried the "cd" command I got "Access is denied" and all the drive letters were different but I'm not sure this is relevant) I also used chkdsk on the c: drive with no change.
I decided to install windows on another drive to try and recover the windows folder from explorer but when I ran the file recovery program on the windows drive I found that some files from the windows folder (which no longer exists so the recovery program refers to as "?") were overwritten by files I downloaded during the last 3 days and their size was ~150 MB so I think maybe these were only temp files. I thought maybe I accidentally moved the windows folder without noticing the last time I used the computer so I searched for it and only found a "WINDOWS" folder in my "Documents and settings" folder which only contained a "system" folder which itself was empty (I don't know if this folder was always there or is related to the problem I have now). The strange thing is the free space on the drive didn't increase after the windows folder disappeared so I think it could still be there.
Any help would be appreciated. also, if there is no way to fix this I would still like to know what happened...
Awhile back I was organizing my picture files and accidentally pressed a few keys, which seems to have caused my file and folder names to disappear in that one folder. I can see them fine in list, icon, tile, or detail view, but in filmstrip or thumbnail view they have disappeared! I use WindowsXP. How can I unhide the file names?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.
Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).
Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.
Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.
The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.
When I right click on desktop and choose Properties, nothing happens.When I go to control panel/appearance and themes and click on anything,nothing opens (except folder options and "Taskbar and Start Menu" ) The
only way I can change wallpaper is by right clicking on an image and selecting set as wallpaper, but I cant do anything else without properties.
