When I used to double click on the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop, 2 folders would appear at the top of the page when it opened.1 folder was called 'Shared Documents' and the other 'My Documents'.Problem is, the 'My Documents' folder has suddenly disappeared.It is still on the desktop and I can access my work from there, but I would like it to appear back in 'My Computer' again.

There were only three folders in my documents - My Music, My Pictures and My Videos, and these only contain the standard sample stuff. Basically, my user is like new again! I went on the internet and as soon as my home page came up everything disappeared. All I was left with was the picture I had on the desktop. The taskbar was gone so I shut it off & restarted. When it did a disk check all kinds of things came up & when it finally started the taskbar was still missing as well as all my documents, pictures, settings, favorites, ect. My entire user account disappeared! I right clicked on the taskbar area and pulled up part of the start menu but I can't access the system tools to try a restore point. It is no longer in the start menu. I tried going in my wife's user account but same problem. At least all her documents are there.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI just installed WindowsXP SP3. After that I loose the access to the Documents and settings/username/ contents. The drawers are there (antivirus scanners parse them) but I can't navigate them neither in explorer neither with command dos emulation.
I obviously set all the check in window-options to see hidden files. I use Firefox but SP3 installed Explorer on my comp.
I have lost my documents and settings somewhere.I click on my computer, local disk c:, then the document and setting folder. All that's in there is the all user folder. When I right click on the d&s folder, it says there is 8.64GB, which is about right. When I click on the all user folder, it's only 60.0MB.So I am assuming its somewhere, I just don't know how to get it back.Also, my favorites in Explorer disappeared, too. When I try to go back and add some that I already had, I get the message that it already exists.Could the folder somehow got hidden?

Added all the new updates from Micrsoft, my antivirus, Tweak UI, MS Word and nothing else yet when I went to the start menu and the My Recent Documents wasn't there. I went to the Properties (right-click on taskbar) and it's not there either. As a matter of fact there is no link or short cut or place to activate it anywhere.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had a registry problem, in that when I booted up my laptop, it said a hive file for the SOFTWARE key was damaged. I fixed this by going into recovery console and restoring the registry backup. So now Windows starts again and everything is good. All of my files are still in tact. However, my settings are all gone. Even though my files are on the hard drive, the appearance of everything is as if Windows has just been installed. In Documents and Settings, the reason is revealed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?
I was looking through my pictures and accidentally hit Ctrl+"something" which hid the folder names. The folders are there, but are unnamed, how do i get the names back?

When I right click in the upper panel of the folder and open the customize panel, I put the icons I need at the top of the folder. Yes, I know that the panel on the left in the folders has many of the functions that the icons serve, such as delete, rename, etc. BUT... after I put all the icons I need at the top, as soon as I close and reopen the folder, the icons have disappeared!!What is going on? View 1 Replies View RelatedWell, reciently I've discovered that my C:WindowsSystem32 folder is gone. Just gone. And it seems that any time a program tries to open something in that folder, it just pops up and says that the file is missing or whatnot.
1. The files are still there. I can access them through IE by typing in the dir in the address bar.
2. The folder is supposedly "Hidden," but I have it set to view all hidden files and folders.
Yesterday I decided to cut and paste a 1.3 gig folder from one partition to another on a seperate drive. The file transfer proceeded, however, after a couple of minutes a message appeared saying it couldn't move the folder as it was currently being used by another program. I closed notepad which was the program involved. I then went to the partition where the folder was originally kept but the folder was not present. Didn't get any error messages or warnings either. I tried clicking on the desktop but got no response so I pressed ctrl, alt, delete, to restart. But when it restarted I got an empty desktop again and it wasn't until the 4th time restarting when everything was there again. I then opened internet explorer and it wouldn't respond. On the fifth time restarting, everything was fine but half an hour later I got the empty desktop again and had to restart 5 times again. Is this a virus? How to I get rid of this problem since it was running fine before this.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI found images in Windows Picture and Fax viewer that I want to delete. I can delete them one-by-one, but that takes time. I went to Disk Cleanup up and deleted all Temp and Temp internet files, but the images are still there. I checked Properties of the images for the file names, went to Win Explorer, but only found C:Documents and Settingsuser, there was no subfolder for Local Settings and, obviously nothing after that. I did a Search in Explorer, including hidden files and folders, for the file names and the searches resulted in nothing. I am back to deleting one-by-one, but my concern is, Where did everything from Local Settings on go to. BTW, I also run Skybot, Adaware and Norton virus weekly
View 14 Replies View RelatedI turned my computer on, and a message pop up, saying that it couldn't find the settings for my user.After logging in it said that I didn't have enough space and if I wanted to get rid of unused things.I said yes and starting analizing space to free or something like that.I went on-line, runned my Webroot, and after an hour I came back erased 3 things and free the space that the software recommended.Then I went to look for a file and all my document folders is gone I can't find it. View 7 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I was using the computer when I got a BSOD which told me to restart if this is the first time I got this error so I restarted and everything went back to normal. I don't know if this is related to the problem I have now. Today I accidentally disconnected the computer from electricity and when I started it again I got an error message which said that the "<windows root>system 32hal.dll" file is missing or corrupted. I restarted the computer and got the same error again. I put the windows installation cd in the cd drive and chose Repair but it didn't ask me to choose a windows installation to fix and when I tried to find the hal.dll file in the windows folder using the command prompt I discovered that the entire WINDOWS folder was missing from the C: drive. (also, when I tried the "cd" command I got "Access is denied" and all the drive letters were different but I'm not sure this is relevant) I also used chkdsk on the c: drive with no change.
I decided to install windows on another drive to try and recover the windows folder from explorer but when I ran the file recovery program on the windows drive I found that some files from the windows folder (which no longer exists so the recovery program refers to as "?") were overwritten by files I downloaded during the last 3 days and their size was ~150 MB so I think maybe these were only temp files. I thought maybe I accidentally moved the windows folder without noticing the last time I used the computer so I searched for it and only found a "WINDOWS" folder in my "Documents and settings" folder which only contained a "system" folder which itself was empty (I don't know if this folder was always there or is related to the problem I have now). The strange thing is the free space on the drive didn't increase after the windows folder disappeared so I think it could still be there.
Any help would be appreciated. also, if there is no way to fix this I would still like to know what happened...
Awhile back I was organizing my picture files and accidentally pressed a few keys, which seems to have caused my file and folder names to disappear in that one folder. I can see them fine in list, icon, tile, or detail view, but in filmstrip or thumbnail view they have disappeared! I use WindowsXP. How can I unhide the file names?

View 4 Replies View RelatedNew user, first time post here. I've got a problem with Windows XP. So a friend of mine gave me a copy of norton ghost 2003 to try out. Well, it must have been a bad copy because when I tried to run it, the program just hung up and did not start the dos ghost, despite waiting for an hour. I shut off the power to the computer, and then it was stuck in this loop of going to pc-dos whenever I turned on the computer. It would not bypass this despite picking the option to skip ghost and go straight to windows. So, I had a new hard drive to put into the computer (which precipitated this whole ghost business in the first place), and i reloaded windows, which went fine
