Show Desktop Button Doesn't Work
Aug 28, 2007Okay, so there are many topics out there from people asking for help because they deleted their show desktop icon.I however never deleted it, it just stop working. After some investigating it was revealed that my C:WINDOWSsystemshow desktop file is gone. The icon is there but the file is gone.

Restore Hide / Show Icons Button
Aug 12, 2002Sometimes you may find the left/right chevron on your notification tray disapears and your icons will no longer hide.To restore the hiding function, just do the following.1. Right click on an empty part of the Taskbar2. From the popup menu select 'Properties'3. The 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' window will open.4. Now click the 'Customize...' button5. The 'Customize Notifications' window will open.6. In the column 'Behavior' set each one to 'Always hide' (you only need to do this for the Current Items not the Past Items)7. Now click 'OK'8. The window will close, all your icons will be hidden, and the chevron button will appear again.9. Now click 'Customize' again and restore all your icon settings to what they were before, or whatever you prefer.10. Click 'OK' again to close the window.11. Click 'OK' to close the last window.Your icons will all be hidden until you start using them again. They will then appear as they did before, until Windows looses them again.

Jun 2, 2010The desktop in my daughter's Inspiron 6000(4 years old machine. WindowsXP home) has no icons, taskbar or start button. This began yesterday morning. No new downloads before this started. Trojan removed two months ago from the system and has been working well since.Problem seems to be common going by my search but the only solution that everyone seems to be leading to eventually is a repair re-install. Have tried reinstalling explorer.exe to no avail. I only get a one second flash of the taskbar. Any suggestions before doing the re-install? BTW, checked for new malware, the system is clean.

Jun 21, 2005Whenever I start up my computer, I can no longer see the Start button, the Taskbar or any of my Desktop icons. I have tried system restore but there were no valid restore points, and re-installing Windows from the CD has not solved the problem.Has anybody got any ideas about how to fix this? The system also seems to be running more slowly, and on some occasions it will automatically restart about 10 minutes after I have turned it on. I've run a virus update (with updated virus definitions) but it has not found anything.

Jun 22, 2005I have XP Home Edition. My problem is that when I try to log into an account (any account) I see the desktop icons, task bar, start button for a second and then suddenly they disappear and I am left with the background. I can not bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) or anything else. I have tried a few things:
1. Ran spyware be gone
2. Ran adaware (got a 'cannot find shell.dll' error after doing this)
3. Tried to using selective startup and disabling startup items (when I reboot it turns it back on)
4. Tried creating a new user account --- problem still occurs.
5. Finally tried a reinstall of XP. Significant to note that during this installation I get an error related to explorer.exe.
The first time I tried to reinstall it aborted the installation. I ran a repair on the programs (from disk that came from Dell with my pc). I then tried the reinstall again....I got further this time but still when it was at the point of installing explorer it through another error and said that the program was not installed.I do not know what to do next!
White Box On Desktop In Upper-Left Corner Of XP- Certificates Button At The Bottom
Jan 30, 2008I have White Box on my Desktop In Upper-Left Corner of my screen that I cannot delete or otherwise remove. I am running Windows XP, and McAfee and Ad-Aware say I have no viruses. In trying to get rid of this box I have discovered that I can expand and reduce the size of the box from the lower right hand corner, and if I drag a web page shortcut icon from my desktop over the box, the web page is displayed. When a web page is being displayed inside the box there are scroll bars on the right and bottom sides to scroll around the web page. If I click on a hyperlink within the box, my default web browser is opened to the link. At first I was using IE, and then I switched to Firefox, and it made no difference. Periodically, the web page being displayed inside the box will disapear, along with the scrolling bars, leaving behind a white box.
When there is a web page being displayed in the box I can right click on the box and I get a menu with the following options: Back, Forward, Save Background as, Set Background, Copy Background, Set as Desktop Item, Select All, Paste, Create Shortcut, Ad to Favorites, View Source, Print, Refresh, Export to Microsoft Excel, Print, Properties. Some of these items are grayed out. If I select properties, there is a "General" tab with the name of the web page, Protocol Info, Type, Connection, Address, Size, Created, Modified. There is a Certificates button at the bottom in addition to OK and Cancel buttons.
Show Desktop Feature
Nov 22, 2007I used to use the windows + D combination to show my desktop but it has stopped working. When I right-click on the taskbar, the option has disappeared as well. Everything that I have looked up on the web, deals with putting the 'Show the desktop' back on Quick Launch toolbar.I can do that - but the Show the Desktop shortcut & Windows + D no longer work.

Jun 30, 2005After running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.
Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).
Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.
Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.
The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.

Jul 27, 2005When I right click on desktop and choose Properties, nothing happens.When I go to control panel/appearance and themes and click on anything,nothing opens (except folder options and "Taskbar and Start Menu" ) The
only way I can change wallpaper is by right clicking on an image and selecting set as wallpaper, but I cant do anything else without properties.

Aug 2, 2005When I try to log on the dialog box cycles through "retrieving user settings"... "logging off"... "saving user settings"... and then returns me to a log in screen. The log in screen is more like an NT screen with fields for user ID and password rather than the XP screen with a button for my users. I have tried my ID, "XP" and "Administrator" with similar results. I installed xp service pack 2 about a week ago. Just before this occured the computer reported "lost or damaged clusters on startup and I allowed it to go through the repair process. May 1, 2005I get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.

When I try to open one, it can take upwards of 20 minutes to do so, then response within the program is no better. It seems like all the resources are under use, but no one can see what's bogging it down.
