I was listening to music yesterday when this randomly happened. I can manually start explorer.exe through the task manager, everything appears for a few seconds, but then it disappears again. I have tried system restore, and restore to last known good configuration, but they didn't work. I ran my spysweeper, and it picked up an adware called "Virtumonde".
View 7 RepliesI'm running a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Home on it.My problem is as such:When ever I close an explorer window, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds...Its quite annoying, and it also closes any other Windows I have open.Programs don't seem to be affected.Has anyone come across this problem? And are there any solutions?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just turned my computer on today and my taskbar is magically gone. I can't right click where it is on the screen and I know it's not hidden etc (i'm not a moron). I can hit the windows key to bring upt he start menu but I cannot see the bar, clock, etc on my screen. I've tried a bunch of things and nothing has worked. I thought it was just that explorer.exe wasnt on, but my icons and such are working just fine, and when I control+alt+delete it shows explorer.exe as running.
View 5 Replies View RelatedA friend gave me his daughters computer to fix and I've been working on it for a week now and I'm more or less stuck on what to do, although I have a pretty good idea what the problem is. This system is a Dell with XP Home SP1,Initially it was infested with virus's, trojans, adware and spyware. you know the usual teenage stuff and the symptoms were pretty much the same as now after selecting the user name from the list you'd get a black screen (no matter who logged on) and that would be it. I could bring up the task manager with Alt-Ctrl-Del and run programs from there and so I was able to Run the add / remove programs applet and get rid of the Norton Anti-Virus and install NOD32, updated and cleaned the hard drive.(internet connectivity works find) Install the latest Adaware 1.06 and do a full system scan, remove all the various garbage.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently set up my grandmother's new computer. XP Home came preinstalled of course, and I just installed SBC Yahoo DSL. McAfee also came preinstalled however i had to update it. I also had to disable it in order to install the DSL. Shortly after i finished installing the DSL, I got an error message saying Windows had to shutdown to prevent further damage to itself. Now booting up I am missing my taskbar and desktop icons.
I cannot access any file on the system, as it tells me that the file cannot be found and to make sure the path is right
I turned on my comp to find a blank desktop. The wallpaper appears but there is no taskbar and no desktop icons. This is the same for each user on the system. I was able to start the task manager and run a command prompt from there which allowed me to run some programs but not windows explorer. My system restore also seems to have been turned off and all restore points removed.
I managed to run a virus check with AVG free edition which detected an executable file 'charlie.exe' in the my pictures folder for two of the users saying they were trojans 'trojan horse backdoor.generic8.fjs'. AVG deleted these but, as I suspected, did not cure the problem. I have also run adaware but this never detected anything other than a handful of tracking cookies. I have downloaded Hijack this V2.0.0, but will wait for advice before posting a log.
I start my pc and when I reach the desktop, I just see a black screen with the mouse pointer appearing. The taskbar and the desktop icons (in both safe mode and normal) mode are missing.When I try to have new task 'explorer.exe', it says that 'can't find explorer.exe'I surfed the net for solutions but it seems that I need to reinstall or repair windows.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I start up my computer, I can no longer see the Start button, the Taskbar or any of my Desktop icons. I have tried system restore but there were no valid restore points, and re-installing Windows from the CD has not solved the problem.Has anybody got any ideas about how to fix this? The system also seems to be running more slowly, and on some occasions it will automatically restart about 10 minutes after I have turned it on. I've run a virus update (with updated virus definitions) but it has not found anything.

He has to do a ctrl-alt-delete to do anything.All of the previous fixes here appear to be for XP machines.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have about 80 computers running in a domain environment.All are winxp pro sp2 or better. The server in Windows 2003 sp2. What I've been experiencing is when a user logs in sometimes explorer doesn't start. Its very random. I can't find a pattern. I just have the user ctrl-atl-del, log off and log back in and all is fine. We are running Symantec AV 10.2 (10.1.7.7000 is what is installed on each pc). I know this is the cause of the problem because of 2 reasons. I uninstalled Symantec AV and the issue disappeared. Also I just upgraded one client from SAV 10.2 to SEP11 and the same thing just started to happen with them. I know others on the net have uncounted the same thing but I have yet seen the fix.

The only way I can open programs and files is to go through the Windows Task manager and open them individually. While trying to fix the problem, I noticed explorer.exe is no where to be found. Has anyone ever heard of this problem and if so, is there any way to fix it without having to reload windows or do a system repair?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi ran some pretty complicated malware-removal programs since my PC (on the office network) was showing loads of trojans and other malware. in the order of running, i ran Malwarebytes, MGTools, Combofix with the windows recovery option. Then, on not having found anything substantial, I uninstalled Combofix with the /u optiom and deleted C:Combofix and later, proceeded to delete C:MGTools.The PC allows me to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del log in, and once I hit Return after entering the password, it just shows me the blue background to the desktop - No items, no menus.Same thing happens in safe mode.

All my folders open then freeze and i have to close through the windows task manager.This happens almost immediately when i access my harddrive F from a shortcut on the desktop. It doesn't happen as fast when accessing other folders on the desktop or folders through shortcuts on the desktop, but within time errors all the same. I've also noticed a program opens in the windows task manager whenever this happens.The program is drwtsn32.exe.

View 11 Replies View RelatedLately I'm getting the "I.E. has encountered a problem and needs to close" message so of course I lose what I had open and have to start over. It's not doing it constantly or consistant on the same websites but it is at least a few to several times a day now. It seems to do it most often when leaving a site and trying to go back to whatever preceeded it especially if I click the back button more than once(unnecessary habit I know).

* I've ran the Norton system scan a few times( just their regular version, not their registry cleaner)

None of which made any difference.
just installed a new hard drive in my computer and now, every time I open any window at all, if I click "X" to close it out, an internet explorer page opens up that is blank. When I close that, I get a Windows Explorer error message that says "Windows Explorer needs to close". I'm thinking maybe there is a problem in the registry but don't know exactly how to go about fixing it.

The only thing i can go on is the internet and things on my desktop. I also have a problem as sometimes my computer crashes and a blue screen appears.
I have two computers connected through a home network. One of the computers is very new and the other, two years old.Both run XP-SP2. I use one mouse for both computers - connected through a 2 port KVM switch. On the older machine, the mouse hangs after I close Internet Explorer. After a delay of a minute or so, it does come back most often. This does not ahppen on the new machine. Mouse does not seem to hang after I close other programs..(tested a few, but cant swear by it). This gets very annoying when I am in a rush.

But When I close all the windows for the second instance of Explorer, the process frequently does not terminate. So then when I try to open another folder window, nothing happens. If I start with the external hard drive connected, it isn't recognized until I reconnect it. I had USB recognition problems, and Dell sent me a new motherboard for my Inspiron E1705, which I installed myself successfully. Now my computer recognizes my printer consistently, but the hard drive and iPod are iffy.I disregarded this and tried to add more music to my iPod. At first, it was giving me disc writing errors. Later on, it would either freeze or only add a small portion of the songs. So I started fiddling around with the order things were connected, and now My Computer freezes when I open it. I restarted my laptop, tried a diagnostic in iTunes (with the iPod attached at startup, which opened iTunes, then closed iTunes so I could turn on my external hard drive where my music is stored, reopened iTunes where music worked by iPod wasn't being recognized by iTunes), and it said I was having iPod connection problems.

I can do a ctrl+alt+del and access the task manager but have no idea on how to restore my desktop. When I startup in safe mode all I get is a black screen.
