Aug 23, 2005Lost XP CD during a move and I have purchased a NEW XP. What must I do to replace the existing XP so I can establish a recovery bootable CD and registry my NEW XP CD.

Replace Existing HD With New One - Use Original Cd?
Sep 4, 2009I have a Dell Dimension Desktop that became infected with a pretty nasty virus. I have had to remove the infected HD from the machine. Instead of trashing the machine, I would like to just purchase an entirely new HD for this machine. I am guessing that when purchasing a new HD that it does NOT already come with an O/S already installed. If this guess is correct, my question is this:Can I use the original O/S Reinstallation CD that came with the machine to get the O/S installed on the new HD? ORDo I have to purchase the O/S along with the new internal HD? If more information is needed before an answer can be provided, please let me know what is needed.

Jun 10, 2005Friends computer, Windows XP Home. She's been having trouble with it restarting on her a bunch lately, but she was always able to at least get to the Desktop before it rebooted without any error message or countdown (like the 0:60 blaster countdown).When I was finally able to take a look at the computer, it won't even get to the windows loading screen. I'm thinking the HDD is dead or not able to boot from some reason. The drive will not boot. Gives a blue error message after the bios POST. Bios can check the drive and it fails. I tried putting a disc in which I 'thought' was a bootable PartitionMagic disc, but it's not booting to it. So I'll try using a bootable copy of Partition Magic and see what it is before we buy a new drive.

Feb 15, 2009I have just purchased an off-lease computer from an online warehouse company. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 530, with integrated graphics and 2gb DDR2 Samsung RAM. Once my computer has been running for about half an hour or so, it will lock up for about 7 seconds, then unlock for a bit, repeating this process. A reset will fix this problem temporarily. In between lockups, I managed to get into the task manager and under the "Performance" tab, every time it locked up, the usage of my first core would skyrocket to 100%, the second core showed no jump in usage. I could not pinpoint the process which is causing this because each time a lockup would occur, under the "Processes" tab, it would read no spikes in CPU usage.
I have removed one of the sticks of RAM to see if it was the culprit. If the lockup occurs again, I will try to replace the stick
Wont Boot - Get The Message Non System Disk, Replace
Nov 16, 2006I have a Hewlet packard computer here, the mother board is a n1996, th eoperating system is ME. The computer justwill not boot at all., it gets to the ME Logo and th escreene just goes black. I can satrt it in safe mode, but i cannot restore it to an earlier date, no mater which date i choose, i just get the mnessage can not restore. I want to, reformat and install XP home, but the CD ROM does not show in my computer and it does not see the disk when i put it in. Also i tried to boot from a Woindows 98boot disk, and themn i get the message non system disk, replace and press any leter to continue.

Aug 19, 2008My son gets the message "invalid system disk, replace the disk, then press play" , when booting up, he started getting it after inputting a picture from a "smart card" using his built in card reader. There is NO disk in the reader. If you hit any key the computer continues to boot "normal" It isn't a big problem, but a sign of something not being right.

Mar 8, 2006I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Not sure what the problem is? prior to that error message, it states that I should "press any key to boot from CD"...when I try to push a key nothing happens. I know my keyboard works since I used it to enter the BIOS.

After bios, a win 98 boot screen appears (very similar to a 98 boot floppy screen), asking to make a choice: safe mode is one, and when it is selected, it complains about not finding several windows files: C:windowshimem.sys, dblbuff.sys and ifshlp.sys. Is there a recovery mode for existing installations? Can I reinstall XP SP2 on top of the existing OS and have it preserve everything?

Aug 19, 2009I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

Sep 12, 2008I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
Reinstalling Operating System: System Wont Recognize CD Drive?
May 5, 2006Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

Oct 22, 2006I am going to be building a new rig sometime in the future and I have an existing install of XP on my current HDD. I plan on buying a new much larger HDD for a fresh install of XP with my new rig. Now I plan on keeping my old HDD but dont have anywhere to back up the data currently on it when I get my new rig.Once I get the OS intalled on the new drive I want to move the stuff I want to keep from my old drive to the new one then reformat the old drive to clear it all up. The new HDD will be a SATA while my old one is IDE, should I wait to plug in my old IDE HDD until after I get my OS intsalled on the new HDD? Or can I plug them both in and set the SATA drive to be the boot drive in BIOS and then do what I need to do with my old drive after installing the OS on the new drive? And lastly if I chose the former and intstall my old IDE drive after the OS on the new HDD will the fact that I have an existing OS install on the IDE drive mess anything up on the boot up after I install the old drive to move what I need to move to the new drive?

Aug 20, 2005I own a HP Pavillion 7955 and run Windows XP. My system was running perfectly until I downloaded the latest version of Ad-Aware SE Personal and ran it. After it ran my system lost all the information pertaining to the CDRW or DVD drives, they vanished into thin air! I now get through the mobo boot screen, then blackness, no BSoD, no Windows splash screen, nothing, just black. The computer is continuing to send a signal because the monitor does not go into power saving mode, but nothing happens after that. I've gone into BIOS and it is recognizing my HDD and my CD-ROM. I'm looking for heart rate monitor files using .hrm as the search term and WE says it can't find any files. I can go to C:/program files etc. and get to the files. File formats are xxxxxx.hrm, with xxxxxx being the date. Searching for .hrm on my laptop finds all of the files with no problem.
