My XP Home SP2 computer starts and runs just fine. No normal booting problems at all but I tried to boot it into safe mode a few days ago to have a look at something. It won't do it. No matter if I try safe mode or command prompt safe mode, it won't finish the boot. It simply goes to reboot after loading the list of files. It's not a big deal now but one of these days I'm sure I'll need safe mode for something.
View 14 RepliesI've run across an unusual (to me) boot problem and it is frustrating. You'd think after more than 20 years of working with (and building my own) computers, I'd have seen just about everything, but this is a new one for me.I'm running XP with SP2 installed. I won't install SP3 because I've seen it cause too much trouble on other systems and won't subject mine (or myself) to that mess. I'm not a big Windows fan (and each new version leaves me less of a fan). I learned computers on a CPM system then promptly fell in love with DOS and still prefer it.
I developed a freeze problem about a week ago. When it continued on a daily basis, I started uninstalling software, starting with the most-recently installed. The freeze problem worsened. Eventually the system would begin to load XP, but in the process of loading my desktop items, it would reboot. Got caught in a vicious reboot cycle for a bit. Wouldn't even stabilize long enough for me to disable my desktop items and wouldn't allow me to boot to Safe Mode.Eventually, chkdsk would run (on startup) through steps 1 and 2. Step 3 would show "unspecified error", and XP would boot. Unsuccessfully.
Can I set Windows to open every window in Windows Explorer in "List" mode rather than Thumbnail or tiles mode.

It check my Hardware configuration and asks me to install a non-windows SCSI/RAID driver, I will not install this driver and I'm continueing as normal. Before this stated, my spyware software deleted some questionable files. I am unable to undelete these files any longer. I believed that these .dll files were related to windows update and closedown any auto update programs but hasn?t stopped it.I have been searching through all my files for any files containing ?winupd.dll? or ?wincore.dll? but having came up with anything that might be executing these files. I have a batch file (used to autoexec.bat in earlier Wins) that cleans temporary folders and gets rid of a couple of files that Paradox creates.I've tried the run command in Win.ini - any other ideas ?

On the laptop this program does not work. After the system reboots, the laptop freezes and the defrag process never starts. In order to get back to my desktop, I have to remove the battery and unplug the computer. I then have to reboot from "last good configuration". Why the difference between the desktop and the laptop?

I've walked her through the process of clicking on View at the top of the Outlook Express Interface and setting the Layout items so that her Contacts and Folder list should be on the screen, but they are not. I've tried everything I can think of to rectify the situation and I've run out of options. The way it is without her folders list she cannot access her deleted folder and her sent folder and cannot delete anything from those folders. Is there anything else I can do to bring up those her contacts list and her folders list?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAbout a week and a half or so ago loading media files takes forever. Whenever I click on a MP3 or AVI file it takes about 30 secs before it loads. In the meantime I get a Windows Explorer has stopped responding dialog and I can either shut it down or wait for it to load.
I've run Spybot, Adaware, and installed ZoneAlarm. I keep getting a message that my computer is trying to access another comp on my network.
I've also tried restoring to an older restore point with no luck.
I used a program to delete hidden files from loading up on boot. Two were casino files that I had already deleted. I unchecked the boxes to prevent them from loading up. I then became creative and kept going. Apparently I uncchecked a file to load up win xp pro. Now I get the blank screen that says "invalid boot diskette, insert boot diskette in A:" I do but it is not reading the A: drive. I then tried to get into setup to change the boot sequence to cdrom first but the blank screen asks me to enter a password. I never needed a password to get into setup before. When I type my system passwore and hit enter all that appears is an X, after three times it kicks me back to the insert boot diskette page.

I have followed other thread advice and removed old Java files, Adaware and Spybot S& D, and installed Superantispyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, CCleaner and HiJackthis. I have tried everything I know but working on this computer is like watching paint dry.

View 7 Replies View Relatedrunning XP setup from CD to try to do a repair results in "no installed drives found." when placed in another system as a slave, its found as quickly as the master HD is when its alone, and seems to function normally - chkdsk & surface scan find no errors & kaspersky finds no MBR or other problems. i even used TestDisk to rewrite the partition table and MBR to no avail. i'm able to copy off all my files, but would like to know if there are other things i can try. is there a way to XP setup repair / replace boot files on a drive other than C:? or can i use anything from a working system to fix the slave drive? can i ghost the partition and put it on a new HD and run repair there or will the boot problems be copied with the image?
View 9 Replies View RelatedLast night XP was just fine,and this morning at first boot up, the typical files appeared when there is a problem...win.com, DBluff,Himem and etc were either missing or corrupted....So no way to restore it, the recovery disk couldn't,so I had to reinstall it on another partition.I wanted to copy my AOL program over to the new partition from the C drive and its just not there...gone. How is this possible?
View 10 Replies View RelatedRecently I retreived a bunch of my pictures off of our church computer.I burned them to disk with some Roxio program.I brought them to home computer and put them in the appropriate file with other pictures from same event.It was my intention to make one CD with all pictures from same event on it.I selected pictures, hit properties had quite a bit of hang time.I selected all pictures for burning.I told the burner what to do using the Win XP pro directions (wizard?) and walked away. DIdn't work, had a problem.Low on memory, so I rebooted. Came back and deleted a bunch of pics that had been archived.Selected pics again, but during the time it was transferring files to the CD (before the wizard) it put up a black screen with a bunch of information that flashed too quickly to read before it rebooted.

I got a new motherboard installed because my old one fried itself and the pc was reformatted and windows was reinstalled. Since then, it was working fine. The start-up time had also lowered considerably and it was working perfectly for once.One thing that's been happening for a while, my computer started taking longer to start-up. There were times where it wouldn't recognize this drive; it wouldn't show up on My Computer. randomly, everything went fine.
I then copied these tracks over to my music folder in my Documents, from there sorted them into year or artist by making folders.
So for example, I might have 50 track's of various artists from the Fifties
so I created a Fifties folder the same for the Thirties, Forties Sixties and
so on. Where I have 50 tracks by the same artist, Buddy Holly or the Trogs I have created a folder called Buddy Holly or the Trogs and so on and I have no problem listening to any track on my PC via WMP
My questions are, when I open WMP, click media library, then click all music,
in the left-hand column I can see all my tracks either under artist, album,
or
genre but it's not how I want it.
Where I can find a list of 'Run' commands and what these do?
