I just want to know what files I should copy for a backup disk? I really only would be concerned about my operating system, not any personal files. Basically, I want to know which specific files, (or sets of files) are required for an emergency reboot. I feel sorta stupid asking this, but recent events have shown me how ethereal and fragile computer programs can be. like wisps of smoke.
View 7 RepliesI had done a couple of reboots yesterday to install a couple of USB devices and then needed to uninstall a printer and then reinstall it. I did another reboot and my XP Pro system with an Intel Dual core 2.4 Ghz machine only displays the first DOS screen, the one with the F button functions at the bottom of the screen. No matter which F buttons I try, it will not show me a boot screen or anything else. I just sits there and is frozen. I even tried rebooting with my XP CD in the drive and it wouldn't recognize or react to that either. What could have gone wrong? More importantly what other emergency boot methods are available?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy XP Home SP2 computer starts and runs just fine. No normal booting problems at all but I tried to boot it into safe mode a few days ago to have a look at something. It won't do it. No matter if I try safe mode or command prompt safe mode, it won't finish the boot. It simply goes to reboot after loading the list of files. It's not a big deal now but one of these days I'm sure I'll need safe mode for something.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use this program on my desktop and it runs perfectly. The laptop is a different story. This program defrags the page files on reboot. On the laptop this program does not work. After the system reboots, the laptop freezes and the defrag process never starts. In order to get back to my desktop, I have to remove the battery and unplug the computer. I then have to reboot from "last good configuration". Why the difference between the desktop and the laptop?
View 7 Replies View Relatedrunning XP setup from CD to try to do a repair results in "no installed drives found." when placed in another system as a slave, its found as quickly as the master HD is when its alone, and seems to function normally - chkdsk & surface scan find no errors & kaspersky finds no MBR or other problems. i even used TestDisk to rewrite the partition table and MBR to no avail. i'm able to copy off all my files, but would like to know if there are other things i can try. is there a way to XP setup repair / replace boot files on a drive other than C:? or can i use anything from a working system to fix the slave drive? can i ghost the partition and put it on a new HD and run repair there or will the boot problems be copied with the image?
View 9 Replies View RelatedLast night XP was just fine,and this morning at first boot up, the typical files appeared when there is a problem...win.com, DBluff,Himem and etc were either missing or corrupted....So no way to restore it, the recovery disk couldn't,so I had to reinstall it on another partition.I wanted to copy my AOL program over to the new partition from the C drive and its just not there...gone. How is this possible?
View 10 Replies View RelatedRecently I retreived a bunch of my pictures off of our church computer.I burned them to disk with some Roxio program.I brought them to home computer and put them in the appropriate file with other pictures from same event.It was my intention to make one CD with all pictures from same event on it.I selected pictures, hit properties had quite a bit of hang time.I selected all pictures for burning.I told the burner what to do using the Win XP pro directions (wizard?) and walked away. DIdn't work, had a problem.Low on memory, so I rebooted. Came back and deleted a bunch of pics that had been archived.Selected pics again, but during the time it was transferring files to the CD (before the wizard) it put up a black screen with a bunch of information that flashed too quickly to read before it rebooted.

View 10 Replies View RelatedRecently I had a bout with Trojans (Vundo in particular) and spyware. The machine just kept rebooting. Installed XP on another partition in order to go out to the web and figure it out.. Finally I decided it would be easier to just reload. After a clean install and installing drivers for some hardware, Windows informed me it needed to reboot so the device would work correctly. After POST I got a non bootable disk error. I put the Windows DVD in to try a repair install, but wanted to see what would happen ifI let it go past press any key to boot from CD.... To my surprise I was able to get into Windows. I suspected that there might be some virus/spyware leftover in the MBR.First I uninstalled the other copy of XP, then tried repairing the MBR. Now it comes up with a missing operating system message when I reboot.I can get into windows as long as the boot from cd option is on in BIOS and I do not "select any key to boot from CD"
All of the SP2 install guides at windowsreinstall.com link provided in the sticky state that XP Home CD is required, what if I don't have one, I have a Dell-provided "reinstall" CD for XP. Can I still use the same procedures to upgrade to SP2

I used the new installation option.During the setup, it asked for the names of the accounts to set up. I set up 3 accounts and did not set up any passwords for these accounts. When the PC rebooted, I got the Welcome screen w/ the 3 account. All require a password. I cannot get past this screen since I do not know a password for the accounts. I have tried blank, as well as the names of the accounts.

Would you like to restart now? Yes or No) if I click yes it reboots and the same window pops up asking the same question, what do you think is wrong?

I've done repairs before on my own system and it didn't ask me to activate it, so I thought this would help solve the problem. Unfortunatly, it is asking for an activation and we still can't find my friends copy. Is all hope lost? or is there something else I should try first? Both of us have valid copies of XP, so I didn't expect to have this

Ok recentli have been having issues when starting up windows xp. Everytime i startup it asks for my boot disk. I have tried to change my boot sequence, having windows not even boot from my floppy disk, but still it looks for the boot disk. The only way i can start up my computer is by going through all 6 boot disks and after it will restart and start up windows.

View 6 Replies View Related A friend of mine is having a problem where he cant log into his computer. But he told me that he did not create a password for the computer. It also has a password on the admin account as well when I go through safe mode. So I took he hard drive out and set it up as a slave on another computer and scanned with nod32 and found and clean virus's. Still asks for a password. i tried ophcrack and it could not crack it. Tried offline password and that did not work either. Only thing I can think of is that maybe someone else put a password on it without him knowing it. Anyone possibly ever hear of a virus or something thats done this before.

As a result, my machine as riddled with worms, trojans, etc. So, I used a Win 98 boot disk and deleted the partition and installed a fresh XP. I ordered Service Pack 2 and installed that along with Norman Antivirus. However, I still need to get up to speed from SVC Pack2. Any suggestions on where I can find these updates so I can download them?I won't be using my machine as I don't want to risk it. In other words, that page where you go and your machine is scanned for applicable updates won't work because I'll be using someone else's machine. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me exactly where to go and I'll download them onto my jumpdrive.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI purchased a new Fujitsu Siemens XI1526 17" note book , It came with German Windows XP Home addition..Not being German I want to use my other English Win XP install disc, the notebook came with a Win XP recovery disc, it has SP2 and SATA / RAID support incoperated unlike my Win XP disc. then I format my drives and then Windows starts the install but before it does I get a message " VIA Raid Combo Driver Diskette" need to be inserted to A: Well Im using a USB floppy so again I asked Simens and they told me that my USB floppy is probably not being support "Bah" in other words "Get a diffrent make such as NEC"
But I dont want to give up their so I've spent 2 days trying to make a bootable CD with SATA / Raid incoperated using This TUT but I keep getting errors in the TXTSETUP.SIF file..My easiest solution would be to get a Siemens Fujitsu Win XP recovery disc in English "Any one have one let me know"But apart from the above info is their any other way of getting this to work apart from Disc in English from Siemens "or Similar" or a diffrent floppy drive.
