i'm trying to format my hard drive as it is corrupt,i have put in the xp pro cd booted from it and dr dos appears i have never used dr dos before andd need some help of what to do next i need to format my hard drive thjen install xp but when i type format c:/ it says the drive i have entered is incorrect or the wrong name.

and also i am not getting the dvd drive option shown at the selection of boot, means at 'to boot from where' ... instead it shows the cd drive which is not connected.
I just reformatted my hard drive using Windows XP re-installation CD. After successfully formatting and installing xp, it goes to restart to continue with the setup. Once it starts to boot it says that press any key to boot from cd but I don't do anything cause it's not supposed to so it try's to boot from hard drive but says: Disk read error Press ctrl + alt + del to restart. I don't understand whats up. I had Windows 7 installed before but do to unfortunate circumstances I have to install XP for now, but I can't complete the installation.Priority Boot Sequence:1.CD 2. Hard Drive.

I did so, but the feature/dll/driver whatever it was (I forget) was not on the disk.Now, whenever I start my machine it stubbornly requests that I insert the install disk. I installed a cool little startup utility by Mike Lin, but am not sure what to turn off.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have with my disk setup. I have 3 dynamic disks which were all working fine until last night when I upgraded my processor and memory. I have fitted an XP 2600 with 333 FSB in place of the 266 version. I also replaced my 512MB of PC2700 with PC3200. I should explain that I did not realise my MB supported the 333 FSB when I bought it. The PC 3200 is purely to give me some leeway for overclocking. Anyway since changing the memory and PSU the PC will not boot at all. I can boot from a floppy or CD but I cannot from the C drive. If I try to restore from a ghost image on another drive I am not given the option to copy to the C drive at all. If I try to re-install Windows or I try to repair the existing installation, I am not given the option to repair at all. I also cannot get into recovery console
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy computer MB took a dump so I bought a new system. I figured I just boot the new system using my old hard drive. No dice. So I boot the new system using the hard drive and OS that came with it and installed my old drive as a slave. When I try to access the documents and settings folder on the old hard drive so I can pull over the favorites, documents, etc. to my new drive it says access denied. The username and password on my new system are the as on the old one. Any ideas on how to get access to that folder?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a P4 HT (old one) I formatted its hard disk using another comp to install a fresh copy of WinXP but the bootable XP is unable to start as there is a "GRUB" message that is last shown and then nothing happens.I have only 1 drive attached to this comp which is this one.it is running in a slave mode(doesn't matter as its the only default drive for the motherboard to read, and i have lost my jumper pin so thats y it is running in a slave mode.)What shd i do abt this "GRUB" message and how shd i go about installing WinXP ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....

There is NO disk in the reader. If you hit any key the computer continues to boot "normal" It isn't a big problem, but a sign of something not being right.

Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Not sure what the problem is? prior to that error message, it states that I should "press any key to boot from CD"...when I try to push a key nothing happens. I know my keyboard works since I used it to enter the BIOS.

I now want to add a second disk of 80 MB capacity and would like to increase the total size of the three existing logical drives to 40 MB each.Is there a feature available in Windows XP that will permit me to do this without having to reformat the existing 40 MB disk drive ?I have certain software installed in the PC for which the setup files are not available. Reformatting the existing disk drive will result in the loss of these applications. I would also not like to add more logical drives i.e. F, G, H etc.

One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
