Not Booting - Dynamic Disk - Recovery Console

Jul 4, 2005

I have with my disk setup. I have 3 dynamic disks which were all working fine until last night when I upgraded my processor and memory. I have fitted an XP 2600 with 333 FSB in place of the 266 version. I also replaced my 512MB of PC2700 with PC3200. I should explain that I did not realise my MB supported the 333 FSB when I bought it. The PC 3200 is purely to give me some leeway for overclocking. Anyway since changing the memory and PSU the PC will not boot at all. I can boot from a floppy or CD but I cannot from the C drive. If I try to restore from a ghost image on another drive I am not given the option to copy to the C drive at all. If I try to re-install Windows or I try to repair the existing installation, I am not given the option to repair at all. I also cannot get into recovery console

Dynamic Disk Recovery - How To Repair

Feb 11, 2008

I have been having trouble removing spyware etc from my XP Pro machine, I decided in the end the best thing to do was a complete format. I had recently converted my HD and it's 3 partitions to a dynamic disk, without thinking whilst going through the XP text setup, I clicked delete partition for C: and created a new one, this in turn deleted the dynamic disks, I never clicked format after I had created the new partition and quit the installation. I removed the hard disk and put it in another XP machine, I can see the 3 dynamic volumes using the disk management tool and the all say failed, I cannot get them back online or figure out how to repair them.

Unmountable Volume - Can't Launch Recovery Console Through Recovery Disc?

Sep 5, 2008

Hoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'd like to try some repair procedures. The problem is, when I launch my "Vaio PCV-RS430G" recovery disc it goes straight to Sony's proprietary recovery interface which provides ONLY the preset option to wipe my 'c' drive and reinstall Windows. According to some MS articles I've read, an XP recovery disc should allow me to access the Windows Recovery Console (by typing "R" at the welcome screen). Can anyone suggest how I can bypass the Sony recovery and get to the Windows Recovery Console?

Cannot Convert To Dynamic Disk?

Nov 15, 2008

I have an EEE pc here, with only 2gb SSD inside, and running windows! (Yes i really would be better off selling it on ebay and buy some lego or something) - buuttt, I had a final thought before doing so; to span the volume onto my external drive. However when I try to convert my external 2.5" IDE 40gb HDD, the 'convert to dynamic disk' is grayed out. I don't know what to make of this, and have found nothing much specific enough on google so far.

Dynamic Data Disk Unreadable

Feb 9, 2007

The drive in question is a dynamic data disk, not my system drive. I had reason to re-install windows onto my system drive. Before I did that I checked to make sure that the data drive, which is formatted as an NTFS drive, and is a dynamic disk, was intact and functioning ok. With XP installed on the system drive I went to look for the data drive in explorer (have done this procedure on many occasions without problems) and could not see the drive. Go to administrative tools and I see a message that says the drive is unreadable.

NTFS Dynamic Disk Unreadable

Sep 20, 2004

I have two hard drives in my computer. The first disk contains XP and the software, the second contains personal stuff. The second disk is installed using NTFS dynamic disk. Last weekedend I formated the XP disk, and installed XP again. After installing, the second disk comes up as "unreadable" dynamic disk. Is there a way to make it readable? I haven't done anything to it, so all the data should be there.

Unreadable Spanned Dynamic Disk

Jul 14, 2005

short description: I got an unreadable dynamic disk with one volume spanned. configuration:

HDD configuration: (both converted from basic to dynamic)...............

after waking my computer up from screen saver and trying to minimize an internet explorer, everything froze. I restarted it by reset switch, and an "NTLDR missing" message came. I started windows by recovery console and I was able to log on to my windows installation (I did nothing, because i have forgotten how to replace NTLDR!). I checked the connection IDE cable to my primary ATA hard drive (disk 0) and the message didn't appear again. Windows started and just before displaying welcome screen "the blue crash screen" came up and computer restarted automatically. I was not able to read the error message because I saw the blue screen just as a splash! I tried recovery console again and it did not recognize my windows installation. then i tried to install windows again. there were 4 drive available.....

Lost Access To Dynamic Disk

Oct 13, 2005

After I did a reinstall of windows xp, I could no longer access one of my disks. It is a dynamic disk, and come up as "unreadable" in the disk management tool of windows. after previous reinstalls of xp I seem to recall to get the option to import the disk, but all I get now is the option to change it to a basic disk, which will in turn erase all my data. If anyone could help me with tips on how to access my disk again without losing data, I'd most appreciate it. Or alternatively tell me where I can find a program to pull the data off the disk before I make it basic.

Cannot Import Dynamic Foreign Disk In PRO

Sep 19, 2005

I intalled Stripe RAID array with (2) WD 74GB Raptors which show up as C. I have a 200GB SATA HDD that was used as backup HDD in same system with previous PATA RAID array. With first XP PRO install I was able to import foreign disk with no problems and data on 200Gb was intact when I connected 200GB drive after updating XP. Because of driver problems on installation, I had to reinstall XP PRO and this time had all drives connected throughout installation. XP saw RAID and 200Gb and i installed XP on RAID array. When I try to import foreign dynamic disk this time it gives me an error," The operation did not complete. Check system log." Log : Error source is LDM. I checked and all sevices are running. 200Gb HDD is in BIOS and in device manager.

Cant Access Recovery Console Any More

Jul 14, 2005

My problem is (to cut a long story short) that I have some dodgy .dll files, messing up my computer (XP) and preventing me from installing anything (not fun when the my computer fixer guy has reinstalled windows, failed to fix it, charged me fifty quid for the privelege, and left me with next to no software on it - not even word).i bought a very informative xp troubleshooting manual yesterday, and i can see my only option is to replace the files using the windows recovery console (I cant replaced them from within windows as its always using them). However, when I try to access the recovery console (in the manner advocated by my book, windows help, and numerous internet pages), by booting up from my recovery cds, and pressing R, i get taken to system recovery, a user friendly interface displaying 3 options for reformatting the whole system, and nothing else. this is obviously not the command prompt interface for the recovery console that i was expecting to be faced with.

Recovery Console At Boot

Aug 12, 2002

The recovery console is a very useful application for getting to your data without having to boot XP. If a registry error due to hard disk corruption prevents you from booting XP even in Safe Mode, then it may be the only way.The recovery console is accessible from the XP CD if you boot from disc. If your CD is damaged, however, you may have no way of booting your system without reformatting the hard drive. This means data loss. Data loss tends to create distress esp. if you have no backups. Here is a way to make the recovery console an option in the Windows XP "OS Choices" menu. Do this before an inevitable registry corruption.1. Insert your Windows XP CD.2. Run {CD-ROM drive letter}:i386winnt32.exe /cmdcons3. A dialog comes up saying it takes 10mb, etc., etc. Click yes to install. If you don't normally see the OS choices menu at boot, go into system properties (winkey+pause), click the advanced tab, and xlixk Startup and Recovery. Check Time to Display List of OSs if it is unchecked, and then set the timeout value to a decent number of seconds.Apply the settings, reboot, and you should see two boot options. Here are some KB articles on how to use the recovery console and how to recover from a corrupted

Disk Mirroring And Dynamic - Second Drive Currently Blank

There are also ipods etc that connect from time to time. On the Windows 7 PC I have 2 500GB WD Sata Drives. I would like to use the disk mirroring facility on Win 7 but I understand I would have to make the drives dynamic drives. If I do this to setup mirroring will the other systems be able to access the dynamic drive I have created.( They are all sharing the partitions already in use on the first drive, the second drive is currently blank).
