I'm running XP, SP2, and every time I open a folder, whether My Computer, Control Panel or on my desktop, the installation of Adobe Acrobat begins. If I then cancel the installation, the desired window opens up and I can navigate up and down as normally - it only happens on the initial double-click to open the folder. The only thing I've been doing recently that might have changed settings and prompted this was in attempting (without success) to set up a home network. I've run a full AVG virus scan without results.
i have got winXp sp-2 i have got to open hidden files when i go to view and click "show all files" i am unable to view the hidden files again when i go to view folder options and click "show hidden files and folders" after saying apply again it the tickmark goes to "donot show hidden files and folder".
recently I was messing around with my folder options and i came along the file types in the folders options, as you can see there are many registered file types below, anyway on that list I went along to "File Folders" and I was messing around with it, then i went to the advanced menu and see commands there for stuff...I touched something and now i cant get my folders opening normal.
When I open certain folders in my computer, these folder tend to take ages to load. I checked the graph in the performance window (Ctrl+Alt+Del) but there was no suddeny increase of CPU usage. Others folder is normal, I double click and it show nicely. Just for certain folder. Is it because of the number of files in the folder? It dont happen when I open my C: drive but if i open that particular folder. The windows explorer just stop responding.. and i had to wait for it to come out. If i access a folder under it and hit back or up, again it will stuck there again n wait for it to load.
I read alot of manga that I download from online. Now after extracting it from a .rar file I try to open it to read it. Explorer.exe crashes and gives me and error message.
I'm using Windows XP Pro. For the last few days, whenever I click a folder it opens a Search window instead of an Explorer window, as I prefer. I went to Tools > Folder Options > File Types then highlighted "File Folder" and clicked the Advanced button.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension XPS with 250GB hard drive (about 80GB free), 2GB RAM, a Maxtor 300GB USB external hard drive, and an HP Scanjet 5590. Ever since I installed the Maxtor drive and the HP scanner, the respective folders in "C:Program Files" open on the desktop every time I startup Windows. I find this annoying. Under File Explorer folder options view dialog box, I tried unchecking "Restore previous folder windows at logon," which did not help. I looked in my startup folder, but there is no shortcut to these folders there. I checked the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" but I cannot seem to find a reference to these folders relating to startup. Perhaps I missed something. Should I be looking elsewhere (in the registry or somewhere else)?
my problem is that sometimes i open up a window on my desktop but cannot view all of the content in the window because the window is too small to display it all. the window cannot be maximized nor can i scroll up or down or enlarge it by clicking and dragging the edges.
Zone Alarm has posted a new release of Version 6.0 (60.667.0) Free on their website. Installation process has changed a little. Be careful to select upgrade, to preserve existing settings and the choice between the Free version and pro is laid out a little different. Will require a boot to complete the install/upd ate.
My XP Pro SP2 PC is now doing something rather strange.Instead of open a folder in Windows Explorer, it opens a command prompt window, to the path of the folder, when the folder icon is clicked. This only happens if I click on a folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer. Clicking on a folder in the left pane opens the folder in the right pane, as it should.I have the same problem with any shortcuts to folders on my Desktop. Instead of opening the folder, it opens a commnad prompt with the path to the folder.I know this has something to do with the File Types tab.If you click Tools, Folder Options, in Windows Explorer. However, when I go into the Advanced properties of "File Folder", I can only Add, I can't Edit or Remove. And yes, I am logged on as a member of the Admins group.
Intel Core 2 duo, E8500 3.16, 4 gb RAM. Running XP sp3 I am pretty sure that I am not lacking in power. However, I am REALLY SLOW, when opening folders, and going back and forth using the back and forth buttons in XP. I click, I get an hour glass for a seconds then it initiates. I have cleared out my Prefetch folder, changed a few registry settings, yada yada. I just cant figure it out. This is a fairly new install, just did a zero fill on my HD about a month ago.

All the folders on my computer are now opening into a new window with the Search function. I have to right-click and choose open to get into my folders. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
This only applies to my folders, but everytime I left-click them, it gives me the search window instead of opening it. I don't remember changing it to do this, is there a way to change to back to Open?

When i double click on a folder in say "my documents", a search window opens instead of opening an open window. If i right mouse click on a folder the word "Search" is shown at the top of the list in Bold instead of "Open". how can i fix this?
My old m/b got fried, so i changed to another m/b and used the same hd for it, and i reinstalled windows XP after deleting the previous, but now when i'm trying to access a folder or file, i get this error "Document may be write protected or encrypted", i really need to open this file, how can i overcome this error?
I have recently purchased and installed a Seagate external Hard Drive. When I turn my computer on the screen remains blank. I have to turn everything off, unplug the External hard Drive and then everything operates normally. Once the computer is booted up I can reconnect the external hard Drive and all works fine. The othe rnoticeable difference ids that the computer has become very very slow to respond to commands.
When I try to open one of My Folders (One that I added to my desktop with application I added to it) with a double left click a search results window opens instead of the folder opening and displaying the contents of the folder with things I've put into it. If I right click on one of my folders and go down and left click on open the folder will open and the contents displayed as I expect (The first opetion displayed is a search after I right click). Any other folder including My Documnets folder will open the folder and display the contents correctly. At one time it used to work correcly and its not a major issue but I would sure like it fixed > Any ideas?
I am running xp on my home 'puter (sony vaio a-290) & an unable to use the cmd prompt.I can open the cmd prompt now ( it used to flash & then disappear not so long ago) but am unable to type anything in it. Very frustratingThe command prompt is almost equally frustrating. Altho it allows me to type & run an ipconfig, for some bizarre reason, it will not allow me to ping anything. If I type ping & then an ip or address, when I press enter, the command prompt closes.
Is there a way to get rid of those security warning prompts when I'm tring to install programs? I've disabled everything in the security center but that didn't help.
Intel Dual Core 2.4Ghz / XP MCE SP2.Running sfc /scannow I get the following message that is well documented on this forum and elsewhere: "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional SP2 CD-ROM now."My problem is that I know I am using the correct CD, and I can't see why Slipstreaming should be necessary, but I still get the error. Some history:01 New PC supplied from manufacturer with XP MCE SP2 backup disk02 Reformatted the HDDs and rebuilt the PC how I wanted it to be using this backup disk to load the o/s03 After installing a particular application I startedto get odd behaviour so ran sfc /scannow04 The error reported above occurred so I checked that the CD has a full i386 directory (it does, of course given I used it to build the PC)
Computer prompts for Windows Xp Startup Password that I do not know. It says: This computer is configured to require a password in order to start up. Please enter the startup Password below. Below the space to enter the password you can hit ok or restart. After unsuccessful attempts because I do not know the password a system error comes on the screen.lsass.exe- System Error Which says: When trying to update a password, this return indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct. This does not allow windows xp to open and the same startup password prompt box occurs in safemode. I have tried using the toshiba satellite l 25 s119 series recovery disk but to no avail, it not does work. Can anyone diagnose this for me?
My PC won't remember usernames and passwords though it prompts me to save them after each time i login.
I have turned it off in Autocomplete and put it back on and no effect.
i did some changes in the control panel as advised by a website to boost game speed. One of these was to go into the control panel and then admin tools and system and disable some of the automatic loaded programs.
I have also lost the windows xp theme and cannots ee how to restore it.The option is no longer present in the themes available.
How can I disable the windows service that prompts me when an executable file is from any unknown publisher? The attached image is a screen shot of the security warning. I don't care about any of the associated risks with disabling this, I've already disabled the windows firewall and security center, I just find this pop-up quite aggravating and would like to know how to make it stop
Since a couple of days I've been having this weird glitch. When I double-click the drive folder, the folder does not open. Instead, the Search Results window is displayed. However, when I right-click the folder, and then choose "Open", the drive folder opens normally displaying my programs etc. Dunno if this is related or not but this began after I installed IE7, the first time around installing the installation crashed on me, second time around worked. This only happens to the drive folders, not the folders/ subfolders themselves, they still function normally.
