Everything Opening With Excel
Jul 21, 2008I am running Windows XP. I went to the Properties on the Start Menu and decided to switch from Classic Start Menu to the newer version. In the list of programs on the new Start menu was EXCEL.EXE, but the icon was wrong and when I clicked on it, it couldn't find Excel. I went to the properties of the link and changed EXCEL.EXE to Excel. It still not working, I deleted the link.Now whenever I click on an icon on my desktop, the system tries to open it with Excel. Apparently the change screwed something up, but I do not know how to get back to where I was before.

Dec 30, 2007I recently did a PCRegistryCleaner "recommended speedup" via running "services.msc" every time I open an Excel file I get a Windows Installer Preparing to instal screen which must be Cancelled before Excel will open up. There were many items recommended to be Disabled and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest an easy way to fix my problem rather than working tediously through every Disabled item one at a time?

Aug 23, 2005If I click on any existing Excel file in "recent documents", excel loads then the file loads - then an error message is displayed that advises: - "A document with the name [doc name] is already open. You cannot open ". No - I didn't double click the doc name and it happens with ANY document in the list of "recent documents". The same thing happens in Windows Explorer (but here I have to double click). If I start Excel then open an existing document there's no problem.

I checked the graph in the performance window (Ctrl+Alt+Del) but there was no suddeny increase of CPU usage. Others folder is normal, I double click and it show nicely. Just for certain folder. Is it because of the number of files in the folder? It dont happen when I open my C: drive but if i open that particular folder. The windows explorer just stop responding.. and i had to wait for it to come out. If i access a folder under it and hit back or up, again it will stuck there again n wait for it to load.

Sep 22, 2007I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension XPS with 250GB hard drive (about 80GB free), 2GB RAM, a Maxtor 300GB USB external hard drive, and an HP Scanjet 5590. Ever since I installed the Maxtor drive and the HP scanner, the respective folders in "C:Program Files" open on the desktop every time I startup Windows. I find this annoying. Under File Explorer folder options view dialog box, I tried unchecking "Restore previous folder windows at logon," which did not help. I looked in my startup folder, but there is no shortcut to these folders there. I checked the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" but I cannot seem to find a reference to these folders relating to startup. Perhaps I missed something. Should I be looking elsewhere (in the registry or somewhere else)?

Jun 8, 2009Intel Core 2 duo, E8500 3.16, 4 gb RAM. Running XP sp3 I am pretty sure that I am not lacking in power. However, I am REALLY SLOW, when opening folders, and going back and forth using the back and forth buttons in XP. I click, I get an hour glass for a seconds then it initiates. I have cleared out my Prefetch folder, changed a few registry settings, yada yada. I just cant figure it out. This is a fairly new install, just did a zero fill on my HD about a month ago.

If I then cancel the installation, the desired window opens up and I can navigate up and down as normally - it only happens on the initial double-click to open the folder. The only thing I've been doing recently that might have changed settings and prompted this was in attempting (without success) to set up a home network. If I right click on one of my folders and go down and left click on open the folder will open and the contents displayed as I expect (The first opetion displayed is a search after I right click). Any other folder including My Documnets folder will open the folder and display the contents correctly.At one time it used to work correcly and its not a major issue but I would sure like it fixed > Any ideas?
