I am having some major issues with multimedia files, namely if I try to play any mpg files on either my WMP or an ATI Multimedia player, my player crashes immediately and I get the standard windows XP error and report it but the windows explorer window also closes with the same type of windows error and reports the problem.
I can only assume this is a result from a "phantom" jpg file I found in a folder this week. The file was "anchored" in a folder in my documents, I say anchored because I was unable to delete/rename/copy/cut/drag and drop/etc. the jpg. Again, I'm only calling it a jpg as it showed a jpg icon although no image was displayed in the preview window and when I selected properties under the file menu, it showed no information, no description, nothing, it even showed 0 kb, although I seem to recall it showed perhaps 82kb when listed in the folder. I was able to finally delete the file by deleting the file folder it was stored in, but it did not undo the damage I mentioned above. Prior to figuring out how to delete the file I ran Adaware, Spybot S&D, Norton, and Ewido and they found nothing out of the ordinary. I also posted an HJT log here and was told it appeared to be clean.
So, when I saw the "debugger" link, I found PCRescue and installed and ran it. Of course I knew it would find lots of errors over 700 but would only delete about 22 in only two registries "windows startup" and "file extensions" Is it worth paying for the full version or is this problem something much more alarming. Lastly, I occassionally see a window informing me DrWatson Debugger needs to be closed, I never installed DrWatson and when I tried to Uninstall it using the control panel, I find no listing there.
On my Dell Inspiron 700 laptop, (with intel integrated graphics) wmp crashes when playing wmv files. The laptop is running windows xp home with sp2. I have no problems using winamp playing .wmv files. I have tried upgrading to IE7 and installing Windows Media Player 11 and it does not resolve it. I even tried uninstalling wmp 11, and then uninstalling/re-installing windows media player 10 and it still doesn't fix the problem.
When i browse through my c drive and open program files i get an Error saying Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The error signature says:
i've been running windows xp and the latest version of flash on this computer for as long as i can remember. the only thing is, about a year ago my computer tended to restart itself when i tried to load a large flash/shockwave file on both ie and ff. some websites cannot cause it to crash at all, Internet, for instance, but other websites like gametrailers cause the problem in hand.i've tried installing and reinstalling them many times, but the problem persists to this day.if anyone could help me to resolve this.
my ladys computer has no sound. In the device manager it just has a big yellow "?" for multimedia, so I will assume the drivers have not been installed. After doing some reading on this forum I downloaded EVEREST Home Addition. In Everest -> Multimedia-> Windows Audio is empty. In Everest->Multimedia->PCI/PnP Audio I have SIS 7012 Audio Device.Where from here?As a simple kinda guy I would appreciate full instructions.
I have a problem with my applications and Windows Explorer mainly. Nothing opens. I can open Run and Windows Media Player and MSN but My Computer doesn't open, not does Internet Explorer.I can right-click on them, but when it comes to opening/launching, nothing happens. This is a problem on my administrator account but not on the account that is Limited.
3 months ago I installed Service Pak2. Prior to the installation Windows Media Player9 had been running flawlessly on my system. After Installation, however I have been totally unable to get Windows Media Player to open. I downloaded Version 10 of Windows Media Player and installed it but again I was unable to get it to open. I cleared all traces of WMP from registry and turned off system restore and then re installed WMP10. Still would not open and the system will not permit me to use version 9 anymore.
when I would open up folders and Windows Explorer would have an error message and then it would refresh my computer and close all Windows Explorer Window(s). Ive researched quite a bit in my spare time in the past two days and found that it could be related to ntdll.dll. But in my research I haven't really found any solutions, yet it almost seems like a common/uncommon problem.
I have done a few system restores all of which were unable to return to a previous state. I am up to date on the latest virus/spyware/adware definitions and ran scans using: Norton Internet Security 2007, Spy Sweeper, AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Stinger......
My OS is Windows XP and the message I get is "Windows Explorer has encountered an problem and must shut down. Sorry for the inconvienence."
This also happens when I right-click on the desktop, but after that message, I get a similar one from Dr. Postmortem Debugger (or something like that) and the computer freezes.

I just completed a reformat/reinstall on a Dell Dimension 4700 running an OEM version of Windows XP Home Multimedia Edition. I had a few driver issues, but I got them all resolved but one, and that is the Multimedia Audio Controller, which is listed under "other devices" in the Device Manager. When I run the wizard, it says it can't find the driver. I located the device by running msinfo32, and I went to the Dell site and located the driver I need (I think) which is R89530.exe.
I downloaded the driver and it only downloads about 1 Mb of a 7 Mb file. I double clicked to run it anyway, and after going through the standard process of creating a folder for it, this message popped up: "This self-extracting zip file is part of a multidisk zip file. Please insert the last disk of the set." Then when I cancel out of the download, it gives me the message, "An error occurred while unzipping. One or more files were not successfully unzipped. The error code is 190."
I have downloaded the file from Dell USA, Dell Canada, and Dell Europe, as well as from an ftp site I found on Google, which is a list of Dell compatible drivers, and the same thing happens with each download. Have you ever seen this before, and if so, do you know of any solution? I currently have no sound, except for the pathetic little beep the system occasionally makes -- nothing at all out of the speakers.
Everything seems to be working without a problem. And after running numerous virus scans and spyware scans, I don't pick up any problems. However, every time I open up a folder which has some of my movies in it my computer hangs. Actually only windows explorer hangs, everything else functions fine, but my taskbar becomes un-clickable and the folders hang. I then close the drwtsn process and it all resets. I don't really want to delete the folder with my movies so is there any way to do anything about this?
My internet explorer just started crashing every time i open it, and also the kazaa lite prog crashes the same way. i haven't tried any other programs, but this is what hijackthis says:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 23:05:57, on 27/04/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Just spent ages and ages setting up a dual boot of XP + Ubuntu Studio. Actually it was my brother who did it and I'm too embarrassed to tell him that I've already messed it up!So I'm trying to get the windows back to it's last bootable state (that option doesn't work in the boot menu) using Trinity Rescue Kit 3.3, which is based on Linux, and runs from a CD.I've managed to burn an ISO and do a virus scan. What I want to do is to somehow access the system restore and undo the changes I did before the Windows got messed up.All I did to mess up the Windows was to uninstall a trial version of Bufferzone Pro using Ashampoo. The computer became unresponsive so I switched it off with the off button and then tried to restart. It beeps once and almost gets to the welcome screen. Safe Mode doesn't work, nor does 'open in last bootable state'. So I am trying to recover the system because I need to do some work on a system I am familiar with. I know next to nothing about Linux, and commands
can anyone help me to delete the history in media player 10. I know how to delete history when you click "file" at the top left of the screen, but dont know how to delete history when you click "File", then "open". You will see "File name" almost at the bottom of the screen with a tick on the far right of the icon. If you click the tick you will see history.

I need to track down drivers for my Packard Bell Imedia 3082 XP Pro service pack 3 desktop. I have been to the packard bell support/drivers site and found 5 out of 7 missing drivers. I had tried the suggested site previously but when i clicked on download products i kept getting a "server not found message". Tried it yesterday again and it worked so thanks to the people who suggested that. Problem now is I am still missing my ethernet controller driver and my multimedia controller driver. I dont know the exact device details in order to download the two missing drivers. to tracking down the ethernet and multimedia controller. I have downloaded and installed the multimedia driver from the Pack Bell Imedia 3082 site but still it is yellow with exclamation mark. And i still cant connect to my Belkin router. So in brief: I need the device details to my ethernet controller and multimedia controller so that i can track down the drivers.
I try to open any folder from the desktop, or explorer(right click start button), or my documents, they don't open, but program shortcuts seem to work. Once inside a program I can navigate to and open folders I couldn't do previousy on desktop. It seems just an error when on the desktop itself.
My wallpaper vanishes and the active desktop recovery screen appears telling me to restore the desktop after somekind of windows error.
Rescue disk for Gateway laptop, A friend has a laptop thats about 18 months old and had a HD crash. He can't find his rescue disk. Anyone know what the Gateway policy is on getting a CD?
I am using winXP and have been for a while without problems. In an instant, while online, doing a file transfer my PC manfested the following problems:
1. Booting up takes alot longer now and once im at the login screen it takes an even greater amount of time to load my profile. it sticks at the loading personal settings message for a while, then once it gets past there it takes a few minutes to load my desktop.
2. I can not open some programs like Media Player. The Error ' can not perform operation-memory too low' appears. In addition i can not access any system tools or programs eg. Help and Support My data files seem to be fine along with all the other non-system related content on my computer.
3. I can not open my internet connection. It seems to be stuck in connected state even after restarting my computer.(I use a dial-up)
To try and solve ths i tried to get into my network places and modems in the control panel but when i tried i got error messages -something to do with 'network places and telephony services may not be activated, activate them and try again.'Another intersesting issue is that my taskbar has changed and looks like a windows 2000 taskbar now and functions slightly differntly than before. In fact my whole OS looks a bit differnt now.
I'm having problems with my window XP opening. I have taken my hard drive out and put in an enclosure, and backed it up. Now I'm trying to determine the product key to reinstall it with the rescue disk.
I have just started experiencing this problem after installing a new backup hard drive. I am searching a large folder of mp3 files to copy to my mp3 player.Periodically and seemingly at random the folder I am searching through resets. That is it blinks and shifts back to the top of the folder. So I then have to remember where I was and find the place that I left off.
I have a (I hope) a small problem with WMP and wav files. I've fixed a similar problem a while back but I've forgotten how :-).I can't play any wav files with my player. I get an error message that reads the following "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."The funny thing is I can play the wav files in other players like winamp , quicktime and mplayer classic. Also read this when I try in wmp 10 "C00D1199: Cannot play the file Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons: The file type is not supported by the Player. For a list of file types (formats) that are supported by Windows Media Player, see Supported file types. The file type is supported by the Player, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the Player. "
Where are the temp internet files for WMP 10 located at? When you watch a video clip on the internet in IE 6, can you save the file? Seems like i could with real player in the temp folder.
I have two drives in my system. an 80gb and a 160gb. the second one has the xp home setup on it.
2 days ago, I did soemthing really stupid; I decided to put Vista Premium on an old 40gb. I disconected the 160gb and connected the 40gb. I left the 80gb on and left it alone. I started to type in the cd key and went to the next screen where you perform and a clean install and I deleted the 80gb disk instead. That's not all-I stopped after I deleted the 80gb information and stopped the install. I reconnected my 160gb and left the 80gb alone. The 40gb was off my system now. I couldnt log onto XP Home. I was crapping my pants. I decided to do a repair but couldnt do it because the xp setup cd was crashing on reboots. Couldnt even get as far as loading the initial setup files. I opened up my case and reset the jumpers on all drives to the master slave settings and made sure all the cables were intact-made sure they were reseated and working. I checked the BIOS and made sure all was well-it is. Low and behold, I cant get anywhere-I have my xp cd that crashes right before the setup files are laid out, I cant do a last known good config-it restarts, I cant do a safe mode.
I cannot seem to find any codec other than 3vix to play these m4a files. That was fine until the demo ran out. Is there a free codec or am I forced to buy a codec (just seems principly wrong). Or maybe some kind of converter?
In the past I have had no problem playing video files on my Windows Media player 10. Now, all of a sudden I cannot see the video but I can hear the sound. This is also the case with the two other players I use - Real and VLC. Having discovered the problem, I have downloaded some codecs from http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Co...k_download.htm in case the codecs are corrupt but it makes no difference.
I have a computer with an 80GB Hard Drive on it. This HDD had XP on a 50GB Partition, and Linux on a 30GB Partition, installed so I can choose between either operating system with Grub when I boot up. Well, I didn't want Linux anymore, so I used Norton Partition Magic to delete the Linux partition. Now, when I boot, GRUB loads and it just says 'unknown filesystem' and then 'GRUB rescue'.Obviously I didn't realize the GRUB started with Linux first, so now I'm screwed and can't boot.
