Media Player 10 / How To Delete History In File Open
Aug 28, 2005
can anyone help me to delete the history in media player 10. I know how to delete history when you click "file" at the top left of the screen, but dont know how to delete history when you click "File", then "open". You will see "File name" almost at the bottom of the screen with a tick on the far right of the icon. If you click the tick you will see history.

I get this every time I try to open a media file even when I click "always use selected program" This just started happening a few days ago after I ran a bunch of registry cleaners.

If you have moved your music around on your hard drives, Windows Media Player continues to add new entries into it's library instead of modifying the existing ones. This means that you will now have multiple entries for the same song, half of which will not work now because you have moved the files to their new location. To delete the current library and build a new one, do the following:1. Close Windows Media Player, wait about 3 seconds for the database to close.2. Using "My Computer", navigate to the following folder:F (or whatever drive is appropriate for you):Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftMedia Index3. Delete the "wmplibrary....db" file here. This is not your actual music, only the database which Windows Media Player uses as a listing.4. Start Windows Media Player5. Hit "F3" and enter the location where you have moved your music to. If it is on muliple drives, check "All Drives". Let it finish. You're Done! All the old listings will now be gone, and you will only have the new accurate ones.

When I attempt to open internet options the window flashes open and closed. If you blink you miss it. If I click on " Delete Browsing History" nothing happens. Everything else seems to be working. I have Zone Alarm running for virus, spyware, firewall. I scanned with Spybot and SAS.

I can open Run and Windows Media Player and MSN but My Computer doesn't open, not does Internet Explorer.I can right-click on them, but when it comes to opening/launching, nothing happens. This is a problem on my administrator account but not on the account that is Limited.

3 months ago I installed Service Pak2. Prior to the installation Windows Media Player9 had been running flawlessly on my system. After Installation, however I have been totally unable to get Windows Media Player to open. I downloaded Version 10 of Windows Media Player and installed it but again I was unable to get it to open. I cleared all traces of WMP from registry and turned off system restore and then re installed WMP10. Still would not open and the system will not permit me to use version 9 anymore.

I started using VLC Media Player a week or so ago because I was having (have always had) problems with the bloated Windows Media Player. But VLC has an odd problem. When I click on (e.g.) an .avi or .wmv file that came attached to an e-mail, I get an error message saying that "the file does not have a program associated with it to perform the action". But it DOES. I open Folder Options, and there it is. Now, the only action in the file type box is "Play". I notice that the one thing I open with WMP also has an "Open" as an action. I tried entering an Open action, and browsed to the VLC.exe file to put in the path, but it doesn't work.
The odd thing about the situation is that if I SAVE the attachment, then double-click it, it plays perfectly using VLC? Why will it play after I save it, but not when I click it as an e-mail attachment? I suspect it has something to do with having an "Open" action in the file type, but don't know how to enter same and have it work.

I am using winXP and have been for a while without problems. In an instant, while online, doing a file transfer my PC manfested the following problems:
1. Booting up takes alot longer now and once im at the login screen it takes an even greater amount of time to load my profile. it sticks at the loading personal settings message for a while, then once it gets past there it takes a few minutes to load my desktop.
2. I can not open some programs like Media Player. The Error ' can not perform operation-memory too low' appears. In addition i can not access any system tools or programs eg. Help and Support
My data files seem to be fine along with all the other non-system related content on my computer.
3. I can not open my internet connection. It seems to be stuck in connected state even after restarting my computer.(I use a dial-up)
To try and solve ths i tried to get into my network places and modems in the control panel but when i tried i got error messages -something to do with 'network places and telephony services may not be activated, activate them and try again.'Another intersesting issue is that my taskbar has changed and looks like a windows 2000 taskbar now and functions slightly differntly than before. In fact my whole OS looks a bit differnt now.

Say you have a favorite file that you like to listen to with your media player. With Winamp for example, when you start the program, the last media you were listening is scrolled along the bottom, but you must hit the play button to get it to play. If you listen constantly to one thing, you can make it load automatically. You can either make a copy of the shortcut and edit it, or you can edit the current shortcut. (If you ever change your mind, just delete the part you added.) Right click on the shortcut. Select properties. In the target box, after the shortcut, add the name of the file to play. For example, the default target to Winamp is "C:Program FilesWinampwinamp.exe". Add the name of your file after that. Example: "C:Program FilesWinampwinamp.exe" http://live.cobbscanner.com:8000 /Prefetch: 1
Note three things: A) you just need one space between start program and file. (It just shows up as a hyperlink here, it will not on your shortcut. B) The "/Prefetch: 1" at the end is not necessary, it just causes the program to load faster (another great tweak I found here.) C)The name scrolling along the bottom of your media player may not be the actual file name. To find it for sure (at least in Winamp), when the media player screen is up, right click the title's scrolling banner. View file info. It is the name at the top of the screen.

Downloaded SP2 for Windows XP Home and immediately lost all video (not audio) in both Real Player and Windows Media Player. Removed each of these and reloaded "fresh" version - same problem. Then removed SP2 and presto - video returns.

Having recently had someone else using my computer for a while, installing various software (like winamp and SubEdit player) it seems windows media player (that's what I use) no longer recognises the usual files as media files like .mp3 .wmv .m3u .avi etc etc so when I click open file and select "media files (all types)" in the file type box it shows nothing, so I have to change it to all files which is irritating. Media player still plays everything fine but this is pretty annoying.

For months I had no problem ripping cd's and playing the music on WMP10. Suddenly the system will no longer do either. Clicking on any of the listed songs results in other music playing which, obviously was not affected. I might add that listed number of times previously played were all erased. Has a new policeman for copyrighted music shown up somehow?

I recently did a google search and when I entered one of the websites a prompt script
download appeared, worried about what it was doing I unplugged the computer and rebooted. I started up IE and when I entered the search menu under the history toolbar the internet shortcut "what I searched" - google search could not be deleted I even ran a history cleaner and yet it was the only thing that remained in the history toolbar under the search menu.

im trying to customize Windows XP Pro to my liking very strictly and for some reason i just cannot delete the History and Temporary Internet Files folder, i 100% do not want them there but if i try delete them it comes up with History is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted.iv'e tried booting into Linux and deleting it off their but when i booted back into windows it replaced them again, i also logged in as the SYSTEM user and deleted them but to no avail. I seriously do not want them folders their, and to my knowledge they ARE NOT required for windows to run properly.

When I insert an audio CD into my CD ROM drive it plays automatically and then I do not know which media player plays the CD. I have WMP,iTunes,GoldWave,Realplayer and quick Time in my Entertainment folder.Task manager does not indicate as to which application or process is being used for audio.I would like to know which program/application is in use at the time the CD is playing. Besides I do not want to disable the autoplay of the CD.

At some point, in the last week, or so, I started to download this program. Within seconds, my computer froze. I could not back out of the download or even shut down from the START menu. I had to do so manually.Ever since, I see two boxes on Start-up: one says "TrayApp" and asks me to insert a CD-rom disk to access the program. Another says "Error 1706" and that no valid source can be found for TrayApp product. Every so often, I see a screen asking me to insert a disk for Viewpoint Media Player. My CD-rom drive is not functioning, so I couldn't do that, in any case, even if I had the disk.
