I use Network Places in xp prosp2 to manage files on my website via FTP. I can rename and delete files on the server and copy files from the HD onto the server. However I can not move or copy files from within the server. Nor can I save a file directly onto the server from within another application.
View 2 RepliesNormally it connects to Orange BroadBand (ex Wanadoo, ex Freeserve) using its ADSL Speedtouch modem but while it's on my network I'm wanting it to use my network connection.However I try,any attempt to browse the iNet is met with it trying to connect via its dialup ADSL connection I've got connection settings to say don't bother).ipconfig /all reveals exactly what I'd expect for the LAN connection, DNS server is fine, etc. and I can ping an IP address but when I try to ping a hostname it says it doesn't know anything about that name, i.e. it's not managing to get the IP address from the DNS servers (I've also tried specifying other servers).
View 5 Replies View Relatedwhen I browse "My Network Places", the browsing is so incredibly slow. It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.
This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.
Cannot see my computer in 'Network Places'. If I 'View Workgroup Computers', after about 1 minute it responds with the usual 'MSHOME is not accessible. YOu The list of servers for this workgroup is currently unavailable.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI come home to visit my family for Christmas last night and use my old desktop. its working fine besides its a little slow. i figure its from my little sister downloading stuff. easily fixed problem. so i try to fix the problem by deleting things that were useless to her and i and were making the computer slow. i restart the computer and my windows xp theme has disappeared, there are no more network places or networks, for that matter, and i have no sound card now.

I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).
I have a desktop PC running Windows XP Home Sp3 and a Laptop running Windows XP Home Sp2 (soon to be Sp3, as soon as I get the update). The desktop is connected via ethernet to a wireless router, a D-Link WBR-2310, and the Laptop is connected wirelessly. Now, having recently gotten this laptop (which previously ran Vista Home Pro, until I downgraded), I felt compelled to set up file sharing between it and my desktop, you know, to quickly access all my music and what have you. So I attempted to do this as one would normally do, only to receive an error when attempting to access my Desktop computer through My Network Places.

I'm ready to wipe it clean and start from scratch.I get a blue-screen which I can reproduce consistently. I'm running XPHome and anytime I explore "My Network Places" it will blue screen either before I get into the folder or shortly after I explore one of my "places". In poking around I also found that when I go into the control panel and try to open Printers and Faxes it'll bluescreen as well.

I removed the domain name to it and now I have not been able log back into the computer, even as the administrator and the guest is locked out (not that I can do much with the guest log-in). View 1 Replies View Relatedi am running server 2000 in my home as and server. i just recently put it in. sense i have put it in i have not been able to run my backups for all of my stuff. have a drive that i call apps on my server and it has all my setups and other stuff. when the backups start copying from that they lockup on files it seems some what random on the file although now that i am thinking more on it i seem to rember seeing the same files over and over. when it lock up it locks up the whole computer. and my backups are run by a batch script

The forum developers have all went for the wrong format, meaning we do double the clicking or unnecessary scrolling. The problem with this graphic card is that its driver is not supported by Windows XP.If I disable my graphic card on my motherboard.I can manage to get
this PCI graphic card to work.If I hook up both the graphic cards i.e. both of them are enabled,the computer does not manage to boot (except in safe mode.) It should also be mentioned that when my PCI card is plugged in the computer at time of booting uses it and not the monitor plugged into the graphic card attached to the motherboard. Is there a way to change this.I tried messing with i.e. all possible combinations of values in the BIOS, but nothing seems to work. I would be grateful if someone had some idea on what to try.
XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

View 5 Replies View RelatedA while back I bought a wired router for my two computers one running XP and one running 98. hooked up the router just like the instructions said, ran the cable hooked it up, nothing happened, ran the network setup wizard made the disk and ran it on the other machine...Nothing happened, brother came over didnt do anything just looked and the other computer was in the network places just like it should be it worked fine the internet worked, file sharing worked, and printer sharing worked for several weeks until a few days ago now the internet works on both computers but cant share files

I have a home wireless Linksys network, with 3 computers. Its intended purpose was to allow all 3 computers to connect to the Internet via an 11.0 Mbps internet connection via cable TV, which has been successful. However, I have never learned how to have one computer send info to another within my little wireless home network, a feature I would like to have, but which I have never explored. I have recently been messing with shared folders, placing two of the three computers on the wireless network, but have found it elusive as to how to put info in a folder to allow it to be shared by the other computer. I am unsure as to whether I have properly put each computer on the network. (Yes, I know I could put files on a disk in the A or D drive, which I have done, but I was of the impression that I could do things more efficiently this way, instead. Indeed, I would like to be able to download entire programs from one machine to the other. But lets keep it simple.) What I have done so far simply doesn't work.

The shortcuts in the My Places bar are convenient but they could be be more convenient if I could replace one or more of them with a folder that I choose.
Is there way to do that
Here's how to change the 5 shortcuts you see on the left when you do a "Save As..." The default save as places are : Recent Documents / Desktop / Documents / My Computer / My Network Places To put your own shortcuts there, do this :

I have just purchased a HP Media Center PC with XP2 and have an older HP PC with XP2. I also have a router hooked to both PSc to use the DSL internet connection. Is there someone that can help me with setting up a home network to move files from the old PC to the new PC
