I have a locally-built system here with COA and product key. I am guessing it was originally loaded with an OEM copy of Windows XP Home; but, I don't know for sure. I don't have the CD. I used to see OEM CDs with no product key for only $10; but, I haven't seen one lately.

What I want to know is when I re install my operating disc on the new hard drive and enter the Key code will it ask for the activation code? I don`t know it!! Or will it just recognise it`s the correct key code and continue to update as normal!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to repair my desktop Windows XP Home installation.I have the original restore cds, but did not want to do a clean sweep, so I got hold of an XP Home cd, did all the repairing and copying of files, entered the key on the COA attached to my desktop, and all the process was fine. At the end, it asked me to activate the copy of windows, which I accepted because my key on the COA is all "clean". However, the process does not go anywhere, it only takes me to the desktop, which is blank and has nothing, not even the taskbar visible. The computer freezes.I have repaired other desktops and laptops I have at home before, and the process worked no problem, so I don't know what i did wrong this time.
Before I did the repairing on this desktop, I had disabled my ethernet adapter because I was connecting to the internet via wireless. So I'm thinking the problem is that the wireless card drivers got deleted, and the system cannot enable the ethernet adapter to connect to the internet to activate windows. First question is: Is this the case? Please help.I am not sure if the XP cd I got is an OEM version, or full retail. Second question: Could this be the problem? Finally, I was thinking of connecting an older hard disk that has a working copy of windows on it to my desktop (instead of the one I "repaired"), boot from it, and then activate the ethernet adapter, so I can then plug the original hard disk and hope the activation process to work.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed Windows XP Home on a PC I built.I can install windows just fine, However when i get the 2nd restart it stops on the windows loading screen, the one that has a little blue scrolling bar across the bottom. I ty resetting and it still stops there. I also tried reinstalling windows and it happens each and every time there. What is causing this? I tried two different video cards and nothing, and different Ram. Is it a bad motherboard? Bad Processor, it shouldn't be considering I can get windows to install up to that point.

When I try to start in normal mode, it goes to the windows xp loading screen with the green loading bar and then goes blank, with my moniter blinking on and off. a checkdisk in safe mode returns no errors. the only things plugged into the motherboard are my cd drive and a video card.

The STOP message/blue screen appeared after XP loaded all the drivers. It is a clean installation on 2 new HDDs, so I assume the error is not caused by viruses. Yes, I did upgraded my BIOS to the latest version beforehand. The SATA data cables are new that came with the motherboard. Yes, I have also read and printed out MS KB324103, but I am still not sure what the problem(s) is/are Does XP Home Edition support RAID1 configuration? I read from Western Digital knowledge base answer ID 282 that "Windows XP Home Edition does not support dynamic disks." Is it true? Does it mean that I will have to buy XP Professional for RAID1 (mirrored)? Should I take out the video card and modem card before installing XP?

The next screen asks to click on the user entered os the registered user on the prior screen and then asks for a password. Out of habit I tried my old password. I then tried no password and again with a space as the password. I tried a few others also to no avail. I formatted the drive and tried to reinstall XP. It goes fine for most of the installation but when it comes to the "Registering Components" part it gets about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way done and then just stops with 12-13 minutes to go. I've tried using the repair option, and totally reformatting again

I wanted to get XP back, so I installed it and then the system was dual booting and it took up 85% of my hard drive. SO...I tried to reformat it and just install XP, but the only disk i had was for my (gateway xp media center) desk top so none of my dirvers installed and then the whole thing became a big mess. Now, I have XP installled with most of the drivers installed, but now I miss Vista, and when I try to install with my Vista recovery disk, I get an error: can not install install missing or corrupt file e:sourcesinstall.wim error 0x80070570... or something similar to that. I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. Mostly with getting things recognized on the small network in my home. When trying to install SP2, it gets exactly halfway then it says access denied.
Due to several fundamental errors in my Windows installation, today I decided to make a repair install of my Windows XP Home installation. I booted into my Windows disc, did all the normal stuff, and it seemed to go fine. At the end of the text-based stuff, it gave me the instruction to reboot, having moved the files it needed to the HDD, I believe. Anyway, the jist is that the text-based stuff seemed to go fine, I rebooted as instructed, and then did NOT click to boot from the CD (which, I believe, was the right choice). I let Windows load normally but... no GUI based stuff came up to finish off the repair installation, and consequently, what I've done seems to have had no effect whatsoever.

If you would disable sata native mode then boot from the xp cd it should show the hard drive and any partitions. The biggest chore may be getting the drivers needed for XP and if is a laptop they rarely come with a floppy drive, so during the xp install I don't know if after you press F6 if you can remove the xp cd and put in a cd that you burned the needed drivers to if a floppy is not available. People should have the freedom to choose whatever operating system they want without all of the headaches

Now, I am trying to use Server 2003 just to see how my comp will do. See, I want my speakers and microphone to work. The only problem is that they are built into the moniter. Everything worked with the speakers and microphone on all my previouse OSs. But now, on Server 2003, nothing will work.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIntel DQ963FX motherboard and mated it with a Intel E2200 Dual core processor. I have 3 gig memory and a NVidia 9400 GT graphics card w/1 gig memory. The machine is not used for gaming but for everyday on line tasks. The on board graphics are disabled. I updated the Bios to the latest version and am running XP Pro SP3. I have the usual antivirus protection enabled, Purchased Zone internet suite, Nortons (kept disabled in case zone craps out)and malware bytes, Super anti malware, Spybot S&D and ad aware.Sometimes when I start this machine and go to Firefox,(or IE for that matter) the system will slow to the point that even audio is stunted. I have the latest java enabled so I don't think that is the problem. This motherboard has very little in the bios to tweak so that hasn't been tampered with too much (latest bios update was installed after the slow started). Whenever the slow down occurs if I restart the machine it will run up to speed for awhile then eventually slow down again. My old P-4 3.02 was sooo much faster that I regret ever having built this new clunker. . Is there a known problem with this mb or proc that I haven't found yet?
