I'm running Home oem and would like to partition my hd. For some reason I didn't seem to be able to when I installed Windows. Do I need to use Partition Magic or can I do it within Windows? I wanna run a dual boot system.
View 6 RepliesI'm an intermediate user just beginning to study for MS sys admin.Both my laptops run XP home, but I have 2000 Pro from when I had a desktop...which I unfortunately gave to a family member. I'd like to install this on one of my laptops because the Pro capabilities will allow me to "study" a little better than just home XP. At any rate, I'd like the experience of configuring everything. will I lose everything in XP if I set up a partition to install 2000 Pro? Is it even possible to install both of them without installing 2000 first? The XP came pre-loaded on my computer but I do have a disk.

What I want to know is when I re install my operating disc on the new hard drive and enter the Key code will it ask for the activation code? I don`t know it!! View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to repair my desktop Windows XP Home installation.I have the original restore cds, but did not want to do a clean sweep, so I got hold of an XP Home cd, did all the repairing and copying of files, entered the key on the COA attached to my desktop, and all the process was fine. At the end, it asked me to activate the copy of windows, which I accepted because my key on the COA is all "clean". However, the process does not go anywhere, it only takes me to the desktop, which is blank and has nothing, not even the taskbar visible. The computer freezes.I have repaired other desktops and laptops I have at home before, and the process worked no problem, so I don't know what i did wrong this time.
Before I did the repairing on this desktop, I had disabled my ethernet adapter because I was connecting to the internet via wireless. So I'm thinking the problem is that the wireless card drivers got deleted, and the system cannot enable the ethernet adapter to connect to the internet to activate windows. First question is: Is this the case? Please help.I am not sure if the XP cd I got is an OEM version, or full retail. Second question: Could this be the problem? Finally, I was thinking of connecting an older hard disk that has a working copy of windows on it to my desktop (instead of the one I "repaired"), boot from it, and then activate the ethernet adapter, so I can then plug the original hard disk and hope the activation process to work.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed Windows XP Home on a PC I built.I can install windows just fine, However when i get the 2nd restart it stops on the windows loading screen, the one that has a little blue scrolling bar across the bottom. I ty resetting and it still stops there. I also tried reinstalling windows and it happens each and every time there. What is causing this? I tried two different video cards and nothing, and different Ram. Is it a bad motherboard? Bad Processor, it shouldn't be considering I can get windows to install up to that point.

When I try to start in normal mode, it goes to the windows xp loading screen with the green loading bar and then goes blank, with my moniter blinking on and off. a checkdisk in safe mode returns no errors. the only things plugged into the motherboard are my cd drive and a video card.

The STOP message/blue screen appeared after XP loaded all the drivers. It is a clean installation on 2 new HDDs, so I assume the error is not caused by viruses. Yes, I did upgraded my BIOS to the latest version beforehand. The SATA data cables are new that came with the motherboard. Yes, I have also read and printed out MS KB324103, but I am still not sure what the problem(s) is/are Does XP Home Edition support RAID1 configuration? I read from Western Digital knowledge base answer ID 282 that "Windows XP Home Edition does not support dynamic disks." Is it true? Does it mean that I will have to buy XP Professional for RAID1 (mirrored)? Should I take out the video card and modem card before installing XP?

The next screen asks to click on the user entered os the registered user on the prior screen and then asks for a password. Out of habit I tried my old password. I then tried no password and again with a space as the password. I tried a few others also to no avail. I formatted the drive and tried to reinstall XP. It goes fine for most of the installation but when it comes to the "Registering Components" part it gets about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way done and then just stops with 12-13 minutes to go. I've tried using the repair option, and totally reformatting again

I wanted to get XP back, so I installed it and then the system was dual booting and it took up 85% of my hard drive. SO...I tried to reformat it and just install XP, but the only disk i had was for my (gateway xp media center) desk top so none of my dirvers installed and then the whole thing became a big mess. Now, I have XP installled with most of the drivers installed, but now I miss Vista, and when I try to install with my Vista recovery disk, I get an error: can not install install missing or corrupt file e:sourcesinstall.wim error 0x80070570... or something similar to that. I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. When trying to install SP2, it gets exactly halfway then it says access denied.
Due to several fundamental errors in my Windows installation, today I decided to make a repair install of my Windows XP Home installation. I booted into my Windows disc, did all the normal stuff, and it seemed to go fine. At the end of the text-based stuff, it gave me the instruction to reboot, having moved the files it needed to the HDD, I believe. Anyway, the jist is that the text-based stuff seemed to go fine, I rebooted as instructed, and then did NOT click to boot from the CD (which, I believe, was the right choice). I let Windows load normally but... no GUI based stuff came up to finish off the repair installation, and consequently, what I've done seems to have had no effect whatsoever.

If you would disable sata native mode then boot from the xp cd it should show the hard drive and any partitions. The biggest chore may be getting the drivers needed for XP and if is a laptop they rarely come with a floppy drive, so during the xp install I don't know if after you press F6 if you can remove the xp cd and put in a cd that you burned the needed drivers to if a floppy is not available. People should have the freedom to choose whatever operating system they want without all of the headaches

1. Would 10Gb for the 1st / XP partition and the remainder for the second partition seem reasonable?
2. I will put the MyDocuments folder on the 2nd partition - do I try and install all programs on the 2nd partition, right? The 'Documents and Settings' folder sits on the 2nd partition also, right? I think I want to keep Windows away from everything, to keep it 'pure'.
3. Will any programs try to deposit temporary files application data in the 1st partition - and do I then shift this data over to the 2nd partition?
Is this something I should try through Fdisc or should I buy Partition Commander? I am learning a lot but don't understand all the ins and outs of the articles I have read concerning partitioning, yet.

The question I have is my computer came with xp already installed so I have no disc to work with.The computer was of course set with the c drive being large, do I just partition the rest of the available space?
