I recently bought a hp desktop with windows xp home on it.Anyways everything seems to be good i used the disks and rest it back to factory and i am having a problem with connecting it to the internet. It recognizes the Ethernet cord connected, but it will not connect to the internet.ive tried : resetting the router typing in a manual ip address and all that.I took out the chip and dusted it off and well dusted out all the internals. everything seems to be running fine no reported issues.

I finally relented and installed service pack 2 recently and my computer has been EXTREMELY sluggish and has frozen up a few times. Currently, two LAN icons appear in the tray at the bottom, one with my DSL connection, the other saying there is no connection
I use a licensed WIN XP Home and am wondering why it takes about two minutes after my wallpaper and icons appear before I can connect to my dsl provider? While waiting for those two minutes, the cursor remains as an hourglass and until I am able to connect to the internet. If I try to connect to the Internet or double click any icon during those two minutes, nothing happens. I do use Zone Alarm with the security settings set to high as well as the Windows firewall enabled.

Whenever I try to use internet explorer, it will close on its own after a little while, stated that and unexpected error has occured. I have internet explorer 7. When I try to open up various things in my documents or on my external hard drive, the same thing happens. I have deleted things that I no longer use, I have run a malware program twice, and I got a new antivirus program (Symantec) and ran it three times. This has not fixed the problem. I have downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and that works well for the Internet, but I still cant open other windows without them giving me an error and closing shortly after. It is driving me crazy

View 8 Replies View Relatedi remote into my XP box everything is fine except when i shut down using a shutdown shortcut and other shutdown utilities no matter what after i get booted off the remote session the computer looks like its shutting down then stays on for a few seconds then a BSOD appear. I have been trying to figure out why for the past week and no solution so im hoping someone can chime in..The problem is only on remote if i shut down locally never a single BSOD and no hardware has changed. View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.

I restarted the computer like I was instructed to do and it booted up fine. explorer.exe shuts down about every minute or so and restarts. There's no error message or anything, just everything on my desktop disappears then re-appears. This only started happening today. It was working fine last night before I got hit with the spyware this morning. What could possibly be causing this and how do I fix it. My computer is basically useless in this condition

This computer is an HP/2.8ghz/512ram/service pack 3 system. It use to run nice, now it boot's slow, slow, slow! It takes 10 minutes to get all the icons loaded, then it works ok. In addition to the slow boot, it also hangs at a black screen, I get around it by pressing F1, then it loads ok. Safe mode loads normally about 2 min.
View 10 Replies View RelatedEvery time I startup or restart my computer, my load takes around 20mins ! I have a Compaq Presario V2000. When I power or restart, the screen goes black, everything flashes, then the Compaq screen shows for about a second (guessing is the BIOS because it lets me hit F8 or whatever) but then after that it goes to a black screen with a status bar at the bottom. Slowly the status bar fills up. At around 20 minutes, which the bar is half way, then the computer flashes again and the XP logo shows and loads normally afterwards.
Im having no more problems with XP or anything else except that startup screen. People tell me its the BIOS, others tell me its not recognizing the Hard drive fast enough among other things. My BIOS boot order is basically CD first then HD. I have tried so many things with no success. And its getting to the point that I cant do anything when it comes to updating stuff without having to restart, which takes those 20mins.
I recently changed my power settings so my monitor would go off after 1 minute while running some scans. Now when I try to change that setting to always on or any other setting, my monitor keeps going black after 1 minute of not being used. Any ideas as to how I can change this?

How come it lets me through the first request for my Product ID number and lets me through the whole set up and then refuses my ID number at the last minute? im definately using the correct number.
