I have a p4p800-e mobo with realtek ac'97 sound card onboard. A few weeks ago the sound stopped working. I checked the device manager everything looks normal. I tried restoring my computer without success. I reinstalled drivers which did bring my sound back when I restarted but only for a short time (1 min). What can I do to fix this problem?

This hasn't happened before. This is only my second video on movie maker, but the first time it worked perfectly. What's going on?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite with a Celeron M, 1.4Ghz, 1.5Gb RAM, and XP Home. In the past few days, it has slowed down to a crawl. Programs like Sound Forge that opened almost instantly now take a minute or more. I ran a complete virus scan and found nothing. System Restore won't work - even in Safe Mode. It's like everything is in slow motion. The CPU is active even when I'm doing nothing.

It takes 10 minutes to reboot my computer! 10 minutes later I m cleaning out temp files and cookies and the like, deleting old profiles, cleaning up MSConfig and Defragging AND moving anything that looks important out to his network share.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe short cuts on my HDD work when using the desktop to get through them, but upon opening any sort of Explorer dialog it does not see see the short cuts at all. Previously, when the problem first started, it(the Explorer dialog) would see them as a ".lnk" rather than treating them as a short cut, and taking me to the place specified. So, were I attaching a picture to an email, if said picture was in a folder that a short cut could lead me to, it would simply attach a "*.lnk" to the email rather than taking me to the folder where the pic resides.

Whenever the computer is booting into windows or into windows (within 20 minutes) the video cuts off and goes into something like a standby mode except the only way i can get it to boot back is to reboot computer. If i put a video card in and don't use on board video the computer freezes when i imagine it would normally black out. It never does this in the Bio's.
I have recently deleted my XP partition and attempted reinstalling XP due to degrading performance. Yes I took that way out. While installing, or often before, the power randomly cuts off with no warning at random places. Last time I did this I just had to keep trying all night until one time it worked long enough to install.

Also when the sound dies, sometimes programs will start to freeze up to the point I can't even kill them in tskmgr. System sounds don't play either.I've tried updating to the latest drivers. When it shuts down, I receive the famous "Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. Also, the failed file proccess in the details section of the error box is never the same! I restarted the computer like I was instructed to do and it booted up fine. explorer.exe shuts down about every minute or so and restarts. There's no error message or anything, just everything on my desktop disappears then re-appears. This only started happening today. It was working fine last night before I got hit with the spyware this morning. What could possibly be causing this and how do I fix it. My computer is basically useless in this condition

Have scanned for viruses (AVG), malware(Windows Defender), cleaned registry (CClean), defragmented hard drive, restored system to earlier point using both Windows system restore and HP Recovery Manager. This computer is an HP/2.8ghz/512ram/service pack 3 system. It use to run nice, now it boot's slow, slow, slow! It takes 10 minutes to get all the icons loaded, then it works ok. In addition to the slow boot, it also hangs at a black screen, I get around it by pressing F1, then it loads ok. Safe mode loads normally about 2 min.
View 10 Replies View RelatedEvery time I startup or restart my computer, my load takes around 20mins ! I have a Compaq Presario V2000. When I power or restart, the screen goes black, everything flashes, then the Compaq screen shows for about a second (guessing is the BIOS because it lets me hit F8 or whatever) but then after that it goes to a black screen with a status bar at the bottom. Slowly the status bar fills up. At around 20 minutes, which the bar is half way, then the computer flashes again and the XP logo shows and loads normally afterwards.
Im having no more problems with XP or anything else except that startup screen. People tell me its the BIOS, others tell me its not recognizing the Hard drive fast enough among other things. My BIOS boot order is basically CD first then HD. I have tried so many things with no success. And its getting to the point that I cant do anything when it comes to updating stuff without having to restart, which takes those 20mins.
I recently changed my power settings so my monitor would go off after 1 minute while running some scans. Now when I try to change that setting to always on or any other setting, my monitor keeps going black after 1 minute of not being used. Any ideas as to how I can change this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install windows xp pro OEM, everything is fine, it accepts my product key, the installion goes well, it gets to the final installation process and it again asks for the 'product ID code', I type it in for the second time at it then says the product id number in invalid. How come it lets me through the first request for my Product ID number and lets me through the whole set up and then refuses my ID number at the last minute? im definately using the correct number.

For example, I double-click on a PDF, word, excel, txt, jpg, file, it takes between 45 seconds and sometimes even 75 seconds for the application to open. If I however open the aplication first, even by double-clicking the desktop shortcut for the application, it opens immediately. From there, I can locate the file to open which also opens immediately. Also, right-clicking on a document takes also 45-75 seconds for the context menu to appear. Sometimes it doesn't even appear. I've tried many "cleaners" out there such as Ccleaner, registryfix, Cleanup! and others. I've also permanently deleted temp files, temp internet files, cookies, history, files, etc.

I started receiving windows notices saying that my computer was infected with spyware. I could tell that these were fake and started scanning my computer with avast anti-virus. It was acting weirdly and then I saw that a window popped up called "vista anti-virus" i then googled this and found that this was a fake anti-virus that would install more viruses on my computer. So, I panicked and manually shut down my computer with the power button and booted into safe mode.

Basically anytime my computer requires my login and password to get back to the desktop, after I hit <enter> it takes way over a minute to come back. I can hit <ctrl+alt+del>, then <k> to lock the screen, immediately try to log back in and it will take over a minute to show me my desktop again.I don't know where to begin to troubleshoot this. I also have Ubuntu installed on a separate partition and grub is the bootloader; however, I don't see how this could affect my WinXp install since Ubuntu is not running at the time.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have XP Home with an Avance AC 97 sound card, probably the cheapest one made. The sound is horribly screechy and distorted on the high end of the spectrum. So I am thinking I might buy a better sound card. I have seen a lot on the Internet that are XP compatible at different prices. Is anyone able to advise on a good, resonably priced card that produces great sound? Also, am I correct in assuming that my present card is a free-standing unit and not part of the motherboard, so that I would be able to remove it and install a new one.
