No System Sound
Apr 15, 2005All my sounds work fine but when I set a sound to play for my system like recycle or minimize, the sound doesn't play.
I'm using XP and my computer Sony viao is not even 2 years old yet.

Sound Stopped Working: System Sound Freezes?
Jul 16, 2008After a while my sound will cut out and when I try to play things in Winamp or anything it will stay stuck @ 0:00The sounds will sputter for a second and then freeze. Also when the sound dies, sometimes programs will start to freeze up to the point I can't even kill them in tskmgr. System sounds don't play either.I've tried updating to the latest drivers. I tried an older version of the drivers too.

Sep 9, 2005I have XP Home with an Avance AC 97 sound card, probably the cheapest one made. The sound is horribly screechy and distorted on the high end of the spectrum. So I am thinking I might buy a better sound card. I have seen a lot on the Internet that are XP compatible at different prices. Is anyone able to advise on a good, resonably priced card that produces great sound? Also, am I correct in assuming that my present card is a free-standing unit and not part of the motherboard, so that I would be able to remove it and install a new one.

Feb 12, 2006I recently formated my hard drive and reinstalled XP operating system. I no longer have sound on my computer. When I go to control panel- sounds it says no driver found. I have a Unimodem Half Duplex Audio Device. I tried reinstalling the driver from the cd and the control panel still shows no driver installed. One time I tried using the resource cd and the sounds worked in both speakers.

Apr 8, 2007I've been unable to get any of the system sounds (the startup and shut down chords, the classic Windows "ding", and soforth) to, well, sound (either when the should normally occur, or via the Control Panel). They will still play via Media Player, as will any other audio file. In addition, I'm not getting any sound on Flash media of any type.
I've tried a few solutions to this problem suggested on other forums:
* Uninstalling and reinstalling my sound card driver.
* Using a program called K-Lite to try and fix problems with the system sound.
* Trying a number of the registry edits at Kelly's Korner. ( http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm )
* Resetting the QuickTime options for the music synthesiser from QuickTime's own to the "General MIDI"
* Repairing and reinstalling Windows.
Uninstalled Sound Running A Windows XP System
Oct 10, 2005I am running a windows XP system. The other day I was uninstalling a piece of software that I had downloaded and wasn't paying attention as I clicked through the prompts and inadvertantly uninstalled it and the sounds for my computer. Is there a way to reverse my blunder and return this computer to its beeping and whirring glory. The computer is my landlords and he is being very restrained in his reaction to my inattentiveness.

I have a SoundMax onboard soundcard on a Gateway desktop, and according to device manager, everything is working fine, but no sound could come from the speakers. So I decided, maybe it is a hardware thing- I happen to have another Creative sound card here, lets try it. It worked! Yay! Then I restart, and then it stoped working too!I have two sound cards, one onboard, one PCI, both appear to be in total working order according to XP, and neither emit any sound after I restart the machine so I am assuming this is a registry issue or something windows related.

Nov 13, 2007Even after a fresh re-install of XP the sound driver install causes the machine to crash. No matter what I do. I have most of the files loaded except for the multimedia controller. each time I try to update it , the machine crashes.Not sure if it matters, all high priority updates are done

Mar 24, 2008For the last couple of days, while my computer plays anything from the CD drive with sound, occasionally the sound just stops for a couple of seconds, then comes back, where it should be a few seconds later, as if it has been playing all along, and I just turned off my speakers. Also, maby un-related, but maby not, I cannot compleat a diskcheck. It gets stuck at 0% on the second stage if you ask it to do one as the computer turnes on.
