View 13 RepliesOk, I don't know how to start this, but a few days ago, my computer contracted a virus (which I have cleaned successfully) and around the same time of the virus, the sound on my computer stopped working. I'm not exactly sure what information someone would need to help me, but I'll put what I think might help (because I really need my music

I tried opening it using the suggested XP backup utility, but while it does seem to be able to return the the backup to the C: drive, it apparently doesn't 'unzip' the file for examination

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have some minor glitches in my system. I've been thinking about reformating the HD and reinstalling XP Pro. 2 questions: 1st is; if I back up my HD and then do a restore after reinstalling the os, won't I just restore the glitches I'm trying to get rid of? 2nd question; Since I've never done a reinstall and restore; will all my programs be restored just as if they have been installed (Drivers, programs, etc.); or do I have to reinstall all my programs and then do a restore so I get all the data that changed after they were installed?

My wife's machine has been running slowly, and I am certain it is full of junk. Earlier I had improved things amazingly by uninstalling McAffee and replacing w/ AVG. Now it's all bogged down again, and a reboot does little to help. In addition, some Windows features have been squirrely for a long time, for example the Windows task bar likes to disappear and not come back. We've never been able to get Eudora (free version) to function properly.

start computer, I hear the System Notification Sound on my computer. I have watched the system tray area several times hoping to see what is causing the sound but haven't seen a screen message. I have googled and searched Microsoft, but can't find a list of items that would cause a System Notification sound to be heard.
Can anyone point me in the direction or web page?
I bought my Dell 4700 about 6 months ago and was just going through the discs that came with it. I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?

View 7 Replies View RelatedJust recently, I noticed my computer acting a little slow than normal so I went to check my task manager. I found out that my total physical memory was "halved". I have 1GB of RAM installed but the task manager only shows half of it, 512MB. I went to check msinfo and it showed that I had 1GB of RAM installed. This problem occurs on a somewhat random basis, sometimes it shows I have 1GB of RAM installed sometimes not. In some applications like CCleaner, it also reflects the same RAM info as my task manager.Any permanent workaround for this problem? Or is this a hardware fault? When this problem occurs, my pc is not making full use of my 1GB of ram, hence the sluggish performance I noticed as of late. Below are screenshots to illustrate what I mean.

working fine for the last couple of years. Recently, while trying to access
this disk, Windows pops a message saying "The disk in this drive is not
formatted. Do you want to format it now?"Windows Device Manager indicates that the drive is working properly.I ran Western Digital diagnostic tests on the drive, and they too indicate that there is nothing wrong with the drive. However, looking at the drive properties in Disk Management, the OS is not able to detect a file ststem on the drive, and thinks that 100% space is available for use.
Windows Media Player 11, and Napster both say that there is an error with the sound on my laptop. The sound is turned on, and after clicking all the buttons to look at everything to do with sound on my laptop, there is no proplem, aside from the fact that there are no speekers. Here is a screeny to show what I mean. How do I get my computer to find them again? There is no way to turn the speakers off externally.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWanted to put my spare computer to use. It previously had Win XP Home on it. Last week I installed Windows 7 beta to have a look, however after realising I would be unable to connect it to the internet due to security restrictions with my University Internet service provider. I decided to install Win XP Pro with the plan to dual boot it with ubuntu. (btw I was very impressed with my short look at Windows 7.) I deleted all partitions and made a new one on my master disk and formatted to NTFS. Installation went fine. However after the compulsory installation reboot the Windows Loading splash screen apears but nothing happens, I never even see the loading bar. I have now tried to install win xp pro a number of times, I am unable to boot in to safe mode, I have performed CHKDSK in the recovery console and FIXBOOT, however to no avail. I'm really stumped as to why I can't get windows to load, I the know the disc is fine as it has been used successfully in the past.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just did clean install of XP on my new Dell D630 notebook and have a problem.I've done plenty of clean installs before and never run into these problems.I checked the Device Manager after installing my drivers/windows updates. For some reason,I'm showing 2 ACPI Batteries,2 965 Chipsets,3 plug and play monitors, 2 Core Duo processors, and several system boards... all I can think of is that there may be newer drivers I need to download (I used the drivers/ utilities disk). I actually had 2 copies of Windows XP showing up when I booted, but one was not actually present, so I deleted it from the boot.ini file, which did nothing.
