View 8 Repliesnew to the site, but not computer related headaches. i have a problem with my computer startup, and tried taking everything off, but, then my internet didn't connect automaticly. i was wondering if anyone could help me figure out which processes automattically connect to my internet via wireless router, so i can leave that one on and take off all the others.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am running a computer on Windows XP originally designed for Windows 98. Once I put it on there everytime I go to shutdown the computer will say "It is safe to turn off your computer" and I have to shut it down manually by the power button. The older operating systems would shut down automatically when I went to shut down but for some reason XP won't on this computer. How can I make the computer shutdown automatically?
View 1 Replies View Related. When I choose to shutdown, it tells me it's shutting down but then restarts. It gave me the option to go back to the last settings that worked, which solved the problem for a little while. Then it started doing it again, and I have no idea why it keeps restarting.

My virus protection stopped all the downloads and I was able to manually remove the trojan, but I'm concerned I may have missed something. I know the connection is good, because I can see other computers on my home network, and those computers can get to the internet (like this one). The Bad computer has IE 7, which loads ok but then I can't get anything on the web. Also have Mozilla Firefox loaded which I was using for a while, but now it won't even open up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried to install ZoneAlarm last week which crashed during the installation. This has caused multiple issues:1 - Can't shut computer down - I can get to the "log off", "shut down" and "restart" option of which none do anything so I'm forced to unplug as the power on/off doesn't work either. I've checked the power management options and these are normal.2 - Can't connect to the internet via my network card. Replaced the card as the network cable works on laptop and though it was the card but no luck(Modem goes to router which splits to 2 PC's and laptop

View 2 Replies View RelatedI use wireless device which connects to my Desktop downstairs, which in turn connects to the router upstairs. So I've been randomly disconnecting when playing games like WoW, and CoH & losing connection on the internet as well. View 3 Replies View RelatedI deleted some files which I assumed would go to the Recycle Bin. When I later decided to remove them completely they were not there. Does the Recycle Bin empty automatically on Shutdown? I have not selected the "Delete Immediately" option. I have since checked the Recycle Bin whenever I have deleted files and they do appear in the Recycle Bin but are gone when I shutdown and reboot. I thought files were supposed to stay there until I emptied the Bin in case I want to restore them. Have I altered the settings in some way and can I change them back?

Last few days when trying to shut down I'm getting an error message "Device 10 Notification" with the option to cancel or end task. Either choice leads me to the same issue that the program is not responding. Sometimes the computer goes ahead and shuts down anyway, other times I have to shut down without ending the program.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up my friends home network. They have 2 PCs connected via ethernet and one laptop on wireless. The router is a wireless router / modem from 2wire. PC number 2 and the laptop both connect with no issues. PC number 1 is weird though. I can go to 192.168.1.254 and it opens up the router system page and I can go through and change and view settings. However when I try to go to any websites it immediately goes to "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." I have tried netscape and the iTunes store and nothing can connect to the web. I have linux ubuntu on a Live CD and I can boot from that and it connects to the internet just fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP SP3 and I did some updates two days ago: I allowed a java update that was hanging around in my lower tray for a couple weeks, updated my adobe to the latest version and I updated to Internet Explorer 8. After having IE8 for less than 24 hrs, my husband and daughter said they didn't like it, so I did a system restore to three days ago and now I can't connect to the internet at all. From the small amount of research I've been able to do here at work, it seems that once you download IE 8 you can't revert back to a previous version? Could anyone tell me if that's true? I can't even open the internet options tab from the control panel to see if there is a settings problem.

View 8 Replies View RelatedUpstairs, I have a desktop and a laptop. They are connected to my wife's computer, downstairs, via wireless. Both my wife's downstairs computer and my laptop, upstairs, will connect to the internet just fine, but the desktop will not, even though it shows that there is a strong signal being received. I am running Windows XP Pro, version 2002, with SP2. The computer has an AMD Athlon chip. It used to be a Tiny computer, but after having a major meltdown, about two years ago, I took it to a repair shop, and they installed an ASRock I/O K7S41/K7S41GX motherboard, as well as a new power supply, so I don't really know what to call my computer, now. I guess it's just sort of a mongrel, Heinz 57 Variety.
I have tried using System Restore, but it won't allow me to restore to a former point, no matter how far back in time I go. I started it up in safe mode, then ran AVG, but no viruses were found. When I go to Control Panel, then "Network Connections," it shows that the wireless network is up and running. Even so, I tried repairing the network, by right-clicking on "Repair," but got the following message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem, because the following action could not be completed: Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed. For assistance, contact the person who manages your network." Unfortunately, that person is me, who is totally clueless
