Computer Hangs: Reinstalled Windows But Error Came Back?
Oct 16, 2008
For some reason for a couple of weeks now my computer hangs all of a sudden no matter what I'm doing. Sometimes I am watching a movie, sometimes playing a game, and sometimes, I just leave it open coz a download is running, I come back and check 10 minutes later, the computer has hanged. I have noticed that when this happens, the hard-disk light comes permanently on.
Ran AVG and found few viruses, removed those, no avail. Ran malware/spyware remover, found few, removed those, no avail. Formatted C drive, reinstalled windows, PC ran well for 10 days, problem came back. Initially had 512 MB RAM, changed it to 1GB, formatted PC again, PC ran well for 10 days, problem back again. Can't run checkdisks and all because the comp hangs every single time.

I have win xp with norton goback 4.0 on it. Has been working fine but when son added a larger power supply i cannot boot into windows now. I get a black screen that says. GoBack internal Error-Failure code: gb_genlog(175)-Press any key to reboot. When i press any key i get Norton screen that says please wait. But then it goes right back to the erroe screen.Cannot get into windows to remove norton, so is there a way to get to dos or something to remove it ?Also my son says if i need to wipe HD and start over that maybe he can put my HD in his computer as a slave and copy the files i do not want to lose.
Will this work ?.

I have reinstalled Windows XP on this Gateway several times now and it keeps crashing. I have called the PC Virus tech support line provided by Microsoft and they gave me a few different virus removal tools to try. I thought I had fixed the problems and brought the computer back to my friend. A week later it did the same thing. It went to Scan disk and began deleting files. I don't know how to stop this. It may be a virus embedded in the registry keys but am not sure. I really need to remove it from this computer.

i have a system running Win XP Pro (Core 2 Duo, 2GB Ram, 250 GB Sata Hdd) software installed Adobe Photoshop, Second Copy & Avast. It had been running fine for the last 6 months and then all of a sudden today on switching on it showed the windows/system32/config/system is corrupt or missing. I reinstalled Windows XP and the other mentioned programs and it ran fine for about 20 mins and then froze up.On a restart it showed the same error as mentioned above. So i quickly reinstalled everything AGAIN..same deal, ran for about 20 mins and began showing the same error.

The error message, 'There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to Control Panel, click Printer and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware' pops up everytime I try to open the Volume Control.I have tried downloading various drivers which many people have suggested bute when I try this message pops up:'Microsoft QFE Update (835221)
This is only to be used on HP Consumer PCs preinstalled with Windows XP. Your PC does not meet this requirement, so update is being aborted. but my PC was preinstalled with Windows i've just had to reinstall it again!

My OS is Win2K Pro and when attempting to boot yesterday my computer hung on the Go Back app and would go no further. During several subsequent attempts I got far enough in the boot process to get an error saying my keyboard wouldn't work. Using a third keyboard I somehow got a full boot with my Windows CD and quickly ran a virus scan showing no infection and thought everything was okay, took out the CD and changed the boot sequence back. Now I'm stuck on the Go Back screen again. While in BIOS I discovered it said the year was 2002 and thought that was why Go Back hung but reset the clock and still nothing works. I can't boot to safe mode (only beeps when I tap the keyboard), now the windows CD will not boot the machine. I've tried to do a reinstall, but am told two small partitions are too small (no option for changing their size) and for some reason can't install on the primary partition, just a note saying I can't, nothing else. I can only get to Set-Up and BIOS. I've tried burning different boot disks to CD (no floppy drive)on another computer but only get Retry Boot when using them.Various times I can get far enough to get Go Back to load then try to revert, but just get a Wait notice from the app and nothing further. No sounds when booting unless I tap F5 or F8, sometimes F12 beeps every time I tap. Of course I haven't backed up my documents and WAB, etc. so I'm trying not to delete partitions and start over.

I am trying to install xp on this good friend of mine's machine that took a dive last week. We replaced the motherboard, cpu, and memory. And afterwords for about 3 days, it seemed to function ok. Then it just quit booting. I told him we would need to reinstall windows. I was kind of shocked we did not have to in the first place. Anyways, So now I am trying to reinstall windows:I can get it to boot from the windows cd, it goes through the standard list of drivers, and at the end says, "setup is starting windows"... Then it just hangs there indefinately. Typically after this, you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install windows, then you hit f8 to agree to there stuff, then you get to partition ect. I mention these things so you will know what part I am talking about.

I recently had a few problems on my laptop, so I reinstalled windows without formatting the drive. Now I guess the windows cd I used had already been installed on my other computer leaving me unable to log on to my laptop because windows thinks my product key is "invalid" and won't activate. So is there any way I could undo this installation of XP leaving the old working one?

I did a google search on the runner error -Invalid Backweb Application ID "137903"-. A website told me to run a search for programs with "backweb" in them and unistall/delete them. I deleted one program (application?) from the C:/ drive and now my computer is frozen. The mouse moves; however, I am unable to open anything including the recycle bin so that I can put the program back on the computer. I have tried to restart and it still happens.

I decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop).
I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size. It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up". I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen. SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??

Everthing's working fine now from what I can tell, except sound. the troublshooting provided by windows so far hasn't turned up anything and the updating from windows' site hasn't helped either. my control panel says that only my usb device is being read although the speaker system is hooked up exactly as before.

Couple weeks ago my friends computer got blue screen error message and we called Dell and they sent us a DVD:
Operating System - Reinstallation DVD Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2.
With one of user help i was able to reinstall Windows from DVD. I can not connect to internet through cable.
or I can not turn the wireless adapter on ( F2 button) Or when i try to play sample music with Media Player it gives an error message - Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

Everytime I turn off my computer by clicking on "turn off computer," I receive an error message popup that states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed." After that pop-up message, the computer freezes for about a minute and goes back to its normal format (desktop) and the computer DOES NOT TURN OFF. How do I turn off my computer without unplugging the computer? I try "ctrl+alt+del" to go to the windows task manager to "shut down" the computer but..the computer restarts again and doesnt turn off. Do I have a virus or a windows explorer problem? and how do i fix it?

when you boot up, if there is a cd in the cd-rom drive, it seems to 'hang' during windows startup for about 30-60 seconds. During that time it doesn't seem to be accessing the drive. After the 30-60 second delay, it boots up fine. Point me in the direction I need to go.

First of all, hello everyone! I'm happy to have joined your community. I feel sort of bad for joining only to ask a question, but the boards just seemed so helpful I couldn't resist. Anyway, I recently installed the .net framework to a stable build of windows XP SP2, and now I'm having some problems. I deleted the asp.net account and checked the "don't use welcome screen" box in user profiles because I don't really like the login etc... that comes with it.
That was two days ago. This morning I turn on my computer only to have it take a long time at the windows loading screen, and hang at the off-blue loging screen without bringing up the login box. Now, I wanted to somehow get rid of the .net framework after I realised I didn't really need it, but now it's not even possible. I tried both entering in safe mode (hanging black screen with "safe mode" in the usual places) and using the last known working setting (and got the same off-blue login screen.) I don't mind reverting to a saved state, but I can't even access the desktop to be able to.

This morning it tells me it has recovered from a serious error, but after about 5 minutes of seemingly normal usage, it briefly flashed some kind of blue screen error (no way in hell I could read it)Now it is constantly asking for a chkdsk, I let it run and all appears OK... but when I get to the login screen the display starts to look weird like there are lines running through it, and it promptly flashes the same blue screeen and starts all over again.
I have been able to briefly get into safe mode, tried a system restore but when I went to reboot the processes started all over again. PLEASE NOTE that getting into safe mode takes some patience.... it hangs FOREVER when loading the agpCPQ.sys driver, and sometimes just goes ahead and reboots on it's own.. TWICE so far today I have managed to get into safe mode, but only for a few minutes before it reboots and starts over.

Somehow I was messing with the shortcuts in my start menu and converted my theme to WINDOWS CLASSIC.
I went back to my DISPLAY/APPEARANCES settings and found that the WINDOWS XP theme option is now gone!
HELP! I feel like I'm trapped in Windows 95 right now. I actually liked the XP color/pattern scheme!
What can I do to get it back?

Recent hardware or software change might have caused this If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what caused the problem choose start windows normally

I have a computer that I recently installed a new mother board into. Everything was going fine after the installation for like a week until I decided to reformat. While reformatting I made it through the initial part of the setup where it reboots the computer. To start the second half of the installation but upon rebooting The computer hangs on the Windows XP page. Now every time I try to restart the computer it hangs in the same spot. I have done some reading around the internet and I think that the problem lies in my Bios but everything seems fine. I have tried to update the bios but the computer doesn't have a floppy drive so I was unable to. I have tried the windows recovery console where I did a fixboot and and a fixmbr

I have a problem when shutting down the computer. About 4 out of 5 times when I select shutdown, the computer hangs on the blue screen and I must force it to shut down by holding the startup button. Then on the next startup, about half the time, the system goes through a check.I am using XP2. I was told by Circuit City that this could be caused by spyware. I brought it to them for a fix, among other problem I have Spy Sweeper installed but even after a scan, the problem persists. Then recommended a clean install of XP2 but I am trying to avoid that route. One thing I do notice is that I have a constant correction on the startup scan with many files in a Temp folder of Spy Sweeper that are invalid. The system corrects itself, but then it happens again. Just to note, this shutdown problem was occurring before Spy Sweeper was installed.

I have a laptop that cannot find boot media device since it went into hibernate. I ran recovery console from Win 2000 disk and ran chkdsk but still no joy. Now I can't get into recovery console as it hangs up when it trys to log onto the WIN NT folder. If I boot as normal it just stays at the initial Windows logo screen.I can't get into dos as it wont log me into WIN NT when I select option 1 from recovery console. Also I cannot reinstall windows either as it hangs up when it says "searching for a previously installed versions of window".I heard that there is a program called Bart_PE and have downloaded it but it doesn't seem to recognize it as a bootable cd.

Im installing Win XP Pro (SP2) on a HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop. Everything runs fine until I start installing windows xp. The cd boots and the "Setup is loading files" goes through but then stalls at "Setup is starting windows". Waited for 2 hours just in case and still the same results. From what I can gather this points to a hardware problem. I have tried different ram modules and removed the battery but all to no avail.Could this be a processor or motherboard problem? I did everything the person above me did and then I took the hard drive out, reformatted it and tried installing XP SP2, Windows Home and the recovery cd supplied by HP. Every time it is gets to "Setup is Starting Windows" it freezes. I know the hard drive is working since I tested it in another computer. The reason I needed to reload XP is the notebook would load and get to the Windows XP loading screen and then freeze. It wouldn't boot in safe mode either.

Each time my system starts, or if I log off and back on again, I receive an Error Message that says--A newer version of this program has run on this PC--and then it asks if I want to close the older version. I have tried in vein to locate the problem but have had no luck. There is no obvious identifier for ther message (other than a the fact that the message appears in a Windows type box and has a small white circle with a question mark in it. I would appreciate any hints on locating the offending program so that I can eliminate the older version. Am running a P4 2.4 gig, 1gig RAM with Windows XP pro SP2 installed.
