Nov 14, 2009when i click turn off it just hangs saying "Windows is shutting down"i have to manually turn it off by pressing the power button

Computer Hangs On When Shutting Down
Dec 5, 2006I have a problem when shutting down the computer. About 4 out of 5 times when I select shutdown, the computer hangs on the blue screen and I must force it to shut down by holding the startup button. Then on the next startup, about half the time, the system goes through a check.I am using XP2. I was told by Circuit City that this could be caused by spyware. I brought it to them for a fix, among other problem I have Spy Sweeper installed but even after a scan, the problem persists. Then recommended a clean install of XP2 but I am trying to avoid that route. One thing I do notice is that I have a constant correction on the startup scan with many files in a Temp folder of Spy Sweeper that are invalid. The system corrects itself, but then it happens again. Just to note, this shutdown problem was occurring before Spy Sweeper was installed.

Mar 4, 2008When I shutdown my Dell PC ( XP OS SP1) using the start log off function, the PC starts to shut down and then hangs up as it approaches the final stage. I then restart the PC with a computer switch and it goes through the process again and then shuts down correctly.I also notice recently that my PC takes a longer time to boot up when turned on.

I couldn't really swift through the forum completely, just in case my concern has been solved previously, please let me know , I will get directed to that page.It takes around 7- 10 minutes to get the welcome screen! And during that process system restarts itself twice..I use McAfee AV and SuperSntiSpyware and PC looks like got no threats. 2 days back i also scanned my Desktop thoroughly with Windows live scan and fixed few registry errors and no other threats were reported.When I switch the power on, power LED starts glowing only after 3 minutes after 2 more minutes black screen appears which shows boot agent and restarting happens.

Jan 11, 2009Hi, I have recently installed Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 1520, I've installed all of the drivers (although I'm having a bit of a difficulty flashing the BIOS) and everything is running fine (with the exception of whatever power management software should be on the laptop), but for some reason whenever I try and shut the pc down, log off or reboot it hangs on Executing: wlnotify.dll for around 15/20 minutes before shutting down. I have extracted wlnotify.dll from the xp disc and copied it over to system32 using recovery console but I still have the same issue, I've had a quick check of the winlogon registry settings to see if i can see anything that would help me but I don't want to me messing around with it too much. I've also created a new user profile and I have the same problem with that profile. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?

Oct 16, 2008For some reason for a couple of weeks now my computer hangs all of a sudden no matter what I'm doing. Sometimes I am watching a movie, sometimes playing a game, and sometimes, I just leave it open coz a download is running, I come back and check 10 minutes later, the computer has hanged. I have noticed that when this happens, the hard-disk light comes permanently on.
Ran AVG and found few viruses, removed those, no avail. Ran malware/spyware remover, found few, removed those, no avail. Formatted C drive, reinstalled windows, PC ran well for 10 days, problem came back. Initially had 512 MB RAM, changed it to 1GB, formatted PC again, PC ran well for 10 days, problem back again. Can't run checkdisks and all because the comp hangs every single time.
Windows Freezing Up In Windows Shutting Down Screen
Feb 26, 2009Computer seems to run fine until i hit start and shut down my computer it goes through the regular process until it gets to the blue screen that says WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN then it just freezes right there and the mouse wont move i have to hold the power button in until it shuts down it does this all the time now. i heve windows xp media edition service pack 3. since then i have updated my bios have turned on and off sound drivers and video drivers and deleted and installed my anti virus programs and it will not allow me to go back to any previos stores.

Dec 29, 2005I am trying to install xp on this good friend of mine's machine that took a dive last week. We replaced the motherboard, cpu, and memory. And afterwords for about 3 days, it seemed to function ok. Then it just quit booting. I told him we would need to reinstall windows. I was kind of shocked we did not have to in the first place. Anyways, So now I am trying to reinstall windows:I can get it to boot from the windows cd, it goes through the standard list of drivers, and at the end says, "setup is starting windows"... Then it just hangs there indefinately. Typically after this, you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install windows, then you hit f8 to agree to there stuff, then you get to partition ect. I mention these things so you will know what part I am talking about.

If you try and come up in regular mode, it will load password and then just about get the desktop completely loaded and the unit will shut down and reboot. This has been going on for a few days now and is getting quite annoying. I understand what DEP is and how to adjust its settings so it doesn't apply to Explorer, however my concern is this: because this started happening out of the blue, I'm concerned I may have picked up a virus that is causing the DEP to kick in, disabling DEP might be a bad idea. I cleaned by machine with full scans of both Avast and Microtrend House Call. They both found a Trojan horse and House Call found some security holes.

Jul 14, 2005First of all, hello everyone! I'm happy to have joined your community. I feel sort of bad for joining only to ask a question, but the boards just seemed so helpful I couldn't resist. Anyway, I recently installed the .net framework to a stable build of windows XP SP2, and now I'm having some problems. I deleted the asp.net account and checked the "don't use welcome screen" box in user profiles because I don't really like the login etc... that comes with it.
That was two days ago. This morning I turn on my computer only to have it take a long time at the windows loading screen, and hang at the off-blue loging screen without bringing up the login box. Now, I wanted to somehow get rid of the .net framework after I realised I didn't really need it, but now it's not even possible. I tried both entering in safe mode (hanging black screen with "safe mode" in the usual places) and using the last known working setting (and got the same off-blue login screen.) I don't mind reverting to a saved state, but I can't even access the desktop to be able to.

If i dont log in and stay at the name menu screen it will still shut down after 2 min.The screen goes black and thats it. I cant see anything anymore. The power on the computer remains on though, cause the green power light is still on. I tried to do a quick virus scan but 2 min isnt enough time to do it.

May 27, 2007This morning it tells me it has recovered from a serious error, but after about 5 minutes of seemingly normal usage, it briefly flashed some kind of blue screen error (no way in hell I could read it)Now it is constantly asking for a chkdsk, I let it run and all appears OK... but when I get to the login screen the display starts to look weird like there are lines running through it, and it promptly flashes the same blue screeen and starts all over again.
I have been able to briefly get into safe mode, tried a system restore but when I went to reboot the processes started all over again. PLEASE NOTE that getting into safe mode takes some patience.... it hangs FOREVER when loading the agpCPQ.sys driver, and sometimes just goes ahead and reboots on it's own.. TWICE so far today I have managed to get into safe mode, but only for a few minutes before it reboots and starts over.
