Shutting Down Windows - Corrupt Explorer.exe File
Dec 12, 2005
when I go to shut off the computer I get a box that says "Program not respsonding" It's for the file explorer.exe. I then usually have to hit "End now" and then sometimes when that doesn't work I have to hit "End now" again. I'm asssuming that this has something to do with a corrupt explorer.exe file right

The Data Execution Prevention (DEP) security feature in Windows XP sp2 keeps shutting down Windows Explorer (windows explorer is not to be confused with IE) at seemingly random intervals. This has been going on for a few days now and is getting quite annoying. I understand what DEP is and how to adjust its settings so it doesn't apply to Explorer, however my concern is this: because this started happening out of the blue, I'm concerned I may have picked up a virus that is causing the DEP to kick in, disabling DEP might be a bad idea. I cleaned by machine with full scans of both Avast and Microtrend House Call. They both found a Trojan horse and House Call found some security holes.

It worked fine for a few days, then I got this blue screen that said I have a system error and that I am missing a file or it is corrupt c:windowssystem32configsystem.Now, this was fine because I thought I knew the answer to this problem, which is incidentally the answer to another recent problem posted on this board, it can be found here:URL...I performed the operation, and again, it was all well and good for a few days. Then I got the same problem again. I used the same solution to make a fix. Then it happened again. So, my question is what's the problem? Do I have a hardware problem? I even used two different WinXp install discs to solve this problem on different occasions since I only needed the recovery console and I thought that the original disc might have become damaged or something.

I restarted my computer after installing an update to my firewall program. I get the "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WindowsSystem32Hal.dll" I tried to do system restore first (F10) and it tried to start windows to start the system restore program I suppose and so of course the same error message came up. After retrying a few times, I tried the other option in system recovery (f10) and it said user data would be preserved but I may need to reinstall programs, so I thought that'd be fine. I let it do it's thing and came back later when it was done and it looked like the first time I started my computer ever where it has that cheesy music and asks you to name your computer, etc. So I'm finally in Windows again (XP Media Edition 2002 SP2) and the first thing I check is my documents folder and all my documents are gone! I checked the properties of the C: drive and it shows that I've used 224GB space, but I can't find my files anywhere. I've looked in all profiles in documents and settings. It seems like the files should be somewhere since the hard drive shows that I have that used space.

while logged into Windows, the IDE cable that is connected to my HD went bad. I double checked this by replacing the cable and seeing if the BIOS could see it, which it could. When I tried to log back into Windows however I got this message. Code: Windows could not start becuase the following file is missing or corrupt:WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEMYou can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the orginal Setup CD-ROM.Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.I'm not sure how this works. Do I hit 'r' at the blue screen after it loads all the drivers or do let it setup and I will get a chance to choose a repair option. The error only effects Windows. I know for sure because I have a Linux partition that works fine. I have my orgainl Windows XP CD- ROM. Does anyone know the steps to fix this? Windows XP SP2 (Fully upgraded)(CD-ROM is the orginal XP SP1 disk)

my file windows/system32/config/system is corrupt. it says i can boot with the CD and use the "R"epair function. I do that and it takes me to DOS where I can roam around my harddrive and the windows CD. now how do I find this file to replace it? because on the windwos CD there is no "system" file in the directory I386/system32/config/. I've tried to copy it from my other computer, but since it's using the file I cant'!

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

Recent hardware or software change might have caused this If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what caused the problem choose start windows normally

I have finally decided that my problems with uninstalling are related to the Windows Installer being corrupt.I reregistered this in Safe Mode but it didn't fix the problem. So I ran SFC but when it asked to insert the CD which I did, I got a message "The CD you have provided is the wrong CD. Please insert the Windows XP Professional Cd-ROM..."I only have the one CD - it came with the computer and is " Windows XP Professional includes Service Pack 2."
