Clarification Needed For WinParallel Install - Hangs With The Progress Bar
Sep 9, 2006
I have tried 3 times to do an XP Repair Install recently - all resulting in shutting down the system with the power switch (have completed it successfully in the past), but after the reboot, the XP Repair Install only gets as far as the Progress bar Window that appears briefly before the Login Window and hangs with the progress bar continuing across the screen, but never continuing the Reinstall any further. With my WinXP Pro SP2 hard drive mounted on my Linux FC3 system with an NTFS driver installed, I copied (recursively) all of the important folders onto Linux where I can create an ISO9660 filesystem image (.iso) file (multiple CDs) that can be used to recreate the information on a new Parallel Install of WinXP Pro SP2.
While attempting to initiate a Parallel Install (in the same partition) which would necessitate a new non-existing folder,e.g. C:WinXP, instead of C:Windows for installation, it occured to me that I was not certain whether: C:Documents and Settings and C:Program Files would survive (if doing the Parallel Install in the same partition).
I am guessing that they would NOT survive - just looking for confirmation on this fact, so can anyone confirm that?
I am also guessing that for those folders to survive a Parallel Install that I would have to create a new partition in which to load the Parallel Install (Have lots of GBs on the WinXP Pro SP2 disk, however, most of the disk is partitioned for C:)- can anyone confirm that also?........

On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.
I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.
Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.
Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?

I finally have the hardware and software to try a few things differently, and want to experiment with alternate forms of XP installs.I have an 80 Gb hard drive freshly fdisked and formatted, and have temporarily installed it as a slave drive. I then copied an XP Home (w/SP2 slipstreamed) directly to this drive. I want to try and directly install that version of XP to that hard drive, but can't determine what minimum files I also need to have extracted already to make it minimally bootable NTLDR, etc. I'm just curious to see if this can be done, for those problem installs where things get sticky. This installation will not be permanent, and is actually at this point, and uninstalled and unactivated CD.

In order to sucessfully remove lock KaZaA out of its AdCache as described in 'Remove Ads from KaZaA' you must first DISABLE simple file sharing in order to display the necessary security tabs. In XP Home you'll have to boot into safe mode to an administrator account.

Also, How long should it take for Pentium 4 PC running XP Pro take to boot up?

Just did a fresh install of Window XP. Went to Windows Update to get current and scan came back clean- nothing needed, not even sp2- NO WAY! I must need a ton of updates, patches, etc- how do I determine what I need in order to get current when MS's own scan says I don't need anything?

Having a problem with the install of Service Pack 3. The update keeps picking it up but halfway through the install a popup appears to say " an additional download is needed to complete the installation.Install service pack 3 again " . Well I have installed 6 times now and the same happens every time, it doesn't say what the additional download is or where to get it from. I'm running XP which has been taking forever to start up up recently ( about 15 mins ) don't know if it's related or not?

This makes about the 6th time I have done the install. When it boots, it hangs for between 10 and 30 minutes at the XP splash screen. The blue bar just goes back and forth but nothing happens like forever. I had tried to replace my HDD as well with an WD SATA 320G HDD, but the bios won't detect it. I tried installing a 40G HDD that had 27G of free space on it. I had been using it as a secondary until my primary went TU last week. I kept running into the problem of it hanging on installation. It would get to the point where it was installing drivers and just stop.
Due to problems that I have been having I went out and bought a new motherboard. I am now running a 1.8G Pentium 4 on an Asis 848P motherboard with 512M DDR Ram. I removed both the 40G HDD and the SATA drive from the system. They are no longer attached. I took a 13G HDD that I had removed to put in a bigger HDD and decided to use it.I did a clean install on the 13G HDD. I formatted it during the installation. Because of the other problems, the only devices that I have connected is the video card, an ATI Raedon 7500, the HDD, keyboard and mouse. The blasted thing still hangs on booting! Because I wanted to know if it happened I activated boot logging and this is what I got.

Late lastnight I was attacked by a nasty virus that wouldn't give control of my computer back, every attempt at a "System Restore" was met by the virus blocking my attempt. I was able to do a "System Restore" via "Safe Mode" but strange things began to happen even after the restore point, so I saved as many family pictures as possible. Bottomline, is there a safe way to scan my thumb drive for virus so that I can add my family pictures to my new fresh install?

My C: drive crashed and I used that excuse to buy a WD3200 320G SATA drive. My old MB wouldn't support the SATA so I bought a ECS 848P-A and a 512M DDR memory.I tried a new install of XP (Home) onto a 40G drive as primary which had 27G free space. It would only install to the point where the screen was saying installing devices and there was 33 min left on the install. At that point it would stop. The little bar on the lower right would freeze. I left it like this for over 30 min to see if it would clear, it never did. I figured that there might be a problem with stuff on the drive so I removed it and installed a 13G that I had laying around. I formatted it during the install so it should have been clean. It would install and ran until I installed the motherboard and video card drivers. When it went to reboot it would quit. It would go to the XP splash screen and stop. The blue bar would keep cycling but it would never proceed.

I decided to do a clean install of XP with SP2 included on the same disc. I had done this before but sometime ago. The Install appears to run fine but after all the files are copied to the hard drive and then the system reboots it hangs displaying the XP logo with the blue activity bars going from left to right. I've removed all boards and even bought a new copy as there is a small scratch on it. I get the same result with the new disc. I borrowed a copy of XP with SP1 and it installs fine. I assume this proves the hardware is all ok.

I am trying to install XP Pro on a machine with an AMD K6 clocked at 266mhz and 160mb of RAM. This is a laptop currently running Windows 98 SE. 98 works fine for me but I hate installing drivers. The laptop is an Compaq Presario 1235. I just want the laptop running XP, it doesn't have to be lightning fast. In setup, it hangs at Setup is Starting Windows. It does the same when installing Win2k.

I am reinstalling my Windows 2000. It worked okay before but I started having some trouble with some of the DLLs, so I thought a fresh install might fix the bad DLLS. It goes through the whole install process, but hangs up at the upgrading IIS section every time. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I haven't changed any of the hardware since I installed 2000 last time.

I have used the search facility to try and find a result to this problem but alas to no avail.I have had XP pro in this desktop before so I know it's compatible. Recently I decided to upgrade to Vista but decided that it wasn't for me and have tried to downgrade back to XP.On first try with XP pro setup bootdisk I got by said problem and got to the format/partition bit but got error message saying unable to load operating system half way through install. I figured it could be because i didn't set up boot in bios properly using bootup selector instead and upon restart during install it tried to boot from hd.
So restarted and sorted bios selection out but now get this wierd problem, being on ANY install disk of XP (I have a few) it jams after "setup is inspecting your computers hardware" i.e. blank screen and nothing happening. I've tried unplugging everything and leaving only cd-rom, hard-drive and monitor/keyboard/gfx card and mouse connected but all to no avail. The drive I'm trying to install to is a samsung 150gb hard drive partitioned to 20gb and 130gb respectively with data still on the 130gb section that i'd like to keep. The most interesting thing is that the Vista disk that I have installs fine without problem which is how I'm writing this.

I get up this morning and turn it on, it seems to boot okay, but after the Windows XP logo and the little blue loading bar it hangs at a black screen until after about five straight minutes I get fed up and power down. I tried booting in safe mode and that worked fine a minute ago, but now I am trying safe mode again and it hangs at a file called Mup.sys and will not proceed with the boot.

it would not do anything whilst on the windows loading screen (progress bar etc worked but it got stuck on that screen and wouldn't advance), the HDD light would blink for a while and then it would just sit there. Usually i would restart until quite a while later I discovered that if i left it for long enough (about 5-10 minutes) it would eventually load. I have also performed several reformats in this time and the problem would disappear for a while then show its ugly face again. It wouldn't do this every time but a large majority of the time it would.
Instead, it would go through the loading screen, finish that, and the screen would go blank (no signal detected etc) and then it wouldn't do anything at all, I have left it sitting there for about an hour once to see if eventually would work but it didn't. So to fix this I have to restart the computer and it would come up with the screen asking me if i want to use safe mode and usually i would either choose the Last known good configuration or start up windows normally, occasionally i would go in safe mode and restart from there and it would usually work but not always.

I know this is a worn topic, but I searched for similar questions and didn't find the same problem that I am having.Upon reboot, immediatley after the BIOS load screen, I get a white progress bar across the bottom of a black screen. It will move a notch then hesitate for a minute then slowly progress. Once it gets up to about two or three notches it will zip to the end and XP starts to load. If I reboot in Safe Mode the same hesitiation occurs as it loads the list of drivers.Once I start to see the desktop, it will take another 7 minutes or so before I can gain control of the computer and the hard drive runs continuously during that time.

I am trying to install xp on this good friend of mine's machine that took a dive last week. We replaced the motherboard, cpu, and memory. And afterwords for about 3 days, it seemed to function ok. Then it just quit booting. I told him we would need to reinstall windows. I was kind of shocked we did not have to in the first place. Anyways, So now I am trying to reinstall windows:I can get it to boot from the windows cd, it goes through the standard list of drivers, and at the end says, "setup is starting windows"... Then it just hangs there indefinately. Typically after this, you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install windows, then you hit f8 to agree to there stuff, then you get to partition ect. I mention these things so you will know what part I am talking about.

I've setup Windows 2003 fax services on a W2K3 server and shared the device. I've tested faxing from Word on my PC and it works fine. However, when other users try to install the fax client, the setup hangs asking for the fx* setup files. I've tried different XPSP2 CDs, copying the files to a local directory, making sure that the users have local admin rights (and even domain admin rights) but to no avail. The files are already in the system32 directory so in theory the setup doesn't even need to copy them. Even if I delete them, it doesn't work. Our corporate SMS team reckons that there isn't any policy which could
cause the problem.

I have an Intel 945GTP motherboard running XP Pro on a SATA HDD that, until last week, worked just fine. Then, it decided not to boot up one morning, in either regular or safe mode.It won't boot from the CDROM drive either. It does boot from floppy.I've replaced RAM, taken out all non-essential hardware, replaced HDD cables.HDD can be recognised in another system.Mouse and KB are not usb.I removed the HDD partition, intending to reload XP, but the load hangs on "setup is starting windows" and never goes anywhere - i left it overnight, just to be sure.I repartitioned and reformatted using a 98 disk, just for kicks, to see if it'd work. Yep, boots to c:> HDD manufacturer's diagnostic reports no errors.I have put in another, new SATA HDD, as well as a new ide hdd.

I was going to make a new partition with MCE 2005 that I got with my computer. If I make a new partition and install MCE 2005, would I still be able to access XP Pro (like how you can change between operating systems on a Mac). I don't want to reformat and install MCE 2005 all by itself because I've had to reformat 3 times in the past year and I don't have the time to reinstall all my programs a 4th time. I just want to have 2 different OS on my system that I can change between...I'd use XP Pro 99% of the time, and then I'd reboot and switch to MCE 2005 when I needed Movie Maker and Media Center. Is it possible to change like that though?
