Install Experiment In Progress
May 4, 2005I finally have the hardware and software to try a few things differently, and want to experiment with alternate forms of XP installs.I have an 80 Gb hard drive freshly fdisked and formatted, and have temporarily installed it as a slave drive. I then copied an XP Home (w/SP2 slipstreamed) directly to this drive. I want to try and directly install that version of XP to that hard drive, but can't determine what minimum files I also need to have extracted already to make it minimally bootable NTLDR, etc. I'm just curious to see if this can be done, for those problem installs where things get sticky. This installation will not be permanent, and is actually at this point, and uninstalled and unactivated CD.

Jan 27, 2008I am getting this error when I try to install something I just downloaded. this can be anything, MSN messenger, FTP clients, and other software.I will run an application then it will lead me through the install, when I finally configure everything and click "Start" or "Install" it gives me this message. ANYTHING I try to install it goes to this.

Apr 20, 2007it would not do anything whilst on the windows loading screen (progress bar etc worked but it got stuck on that screen and wouldn't advance), the HDD light would blink for a while and then it would just sit there. Usually i would restart until quite a while later I discovered that if i left it for long enough (about 5-10 minutes) it would eventually load. I have also performed several reformats in this time and the problem would disappear for a while then show its ugly face again. It wouldn't do this every time but a large majority of the time it would.
Instead, it would go through the loading screen, finish that, and the screen would go blank (no signal detected etc) and then it wouldn't do anything at all, I have left it sitting there for about an hour once to see if eventually would work but it didn't. So to fix this I have to restart the computer and it would come up with the screen asking me if i want to use safe mode and usually i would either choose the Last known good configuration or start up windows normally, occasionally i would go in safe mode and restart from there and it would usually work but not always.
Progress Bar Across Bottom Of Black Screen
Aug 24, 2007I know this is a worn topic, but I searched for similar questions and didn't find the same problem that I am having.Upon reboot, immediatley after the BIOS load screen, I get a white progress bar across the bottom of a black screen. It will move a notch then hesitate for a minute then slowly progress. Once it gets up to about two or three notches it will zip to the end and XP starts to load. If I reboot in Safe Mode the same hesitiation occurs as it loads the list of drivers.Once I start to see the desktop, it will take another 7 minutes or so before I can gain control of the computer and the hard drive runs continuously during that time.

Sep 9, 2006I have tried 3 times to do an XP Repair Install recently - all resulting in shutting down the system with the power switch (have completed it successfully in the past), but after the reboot, the XP Repair Install only gets as far as the Progress bar Window that appears briefly before the Login Window and hangs with the progress bar continuing across the screen, but never continuing the Reinstall any further. With my WinXP Pro SP2 hard drive mounted on my Linux FC3 system with an NTFS driver installed, I copied (recursively) all of the important folders onto Linux where I can create an ISO9660 filesystem image (.iso) file (multiple CDs) that can be used to recreate the information on a new Parallel Install of WinXP Pro SP2.
While attempting to initiate a Parallel Install (in the same partition) which would necessitate a new non-existing folder,e.g. C:WinXP, instead of C:Windows for installation, it occured to me that I was not certain whether: C:Documents and Settings and C:Program Files would survive (if doing the Parallel Install in the same partition).
I am guessing that they would NOT survive - just looking for confirmation on this fact, so can anyone confirm that?
I am also guessing that for those folders to survive a Parallel Install that I would have to create a new partition in which to load the Parallel Install (Have lots of GBs on the WinXP Pro SP2 disk, however, most of the disk is partitioned for C:)- can anyone confirm that also?........

Oct 26, 2007On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.
I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.
Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.
Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?
Never Fully Loads The Desktop
Sep 1, 2009My sister has given me her used laptop, telling me if I can make it work, it's all mine. The problem is, it never fully loads the desktop. You can't click anything or do anything else. She has lost her XP disk so I can't restore the system. I tried booting up in Safe Mode, but it still freezes on the desktop I am completely clueless on what to do. Is there any software available that could boot from a disk and do something?

When I start my computer, there is a black screen with a loading bar at the bottom, which takes atleast five minutes to load. When I launch a game, it takes ages for it to start up and it also takes ages to join a server. I tried reformating, but it didn't help. When I was installing one of my games, I found that it took about 10 times as long to install. And while it was installing, I couldn't do anything else because it slowed everything down. It's like my RAM has been lowered or something. I am guessing it may be a hardware problem.

Unable To Log In Using A Password / Homepage Never Loads
Feb 8, 2006When trying to check "my account" on a webpage it doesn't let me navigate, it boots me out back to the sign in page. I can sign in and see the welcome page (it says "Welcome and my name") but when I try to go to another page in the site (for example "my account") it won't let me go. Also my internet homepage is Yahoo, when I refresh or open to the homepage Yahoo never loads ... I have to click "GO" to get the page to load. Are these two problems related somehow? Anyone?

Comp Freezes, Sometimes BSOD When DVD Loads
Mar 12, 2007When I am on the comp normally, on the internet, using Word, etc. it's all fine. The problem only starts when I try to play a dvd. Sometimes, it will play for a little while and then I hear a 'click' sound and the comp freezes. I would have to press the restart button for it to do anything.Other times, as soon as the DVD drive starts to load a dvd, a 'click' sound is heard, and it freezes.Sometimes, the same happens as above, and the BLUE SCREEN shows up- says something about memory dump..I don't know what to do! I've tried using a different programs to load the DVD, e.g. Power DVD, Windows Media Player, AVI... don't think it makes a difference now! (When I changed from Power DVD to WMP it worked for a week or so, then it started all over again! This problem started when I still had my old DVD drive, which was 8X and now I have a 16X. At first it was all fine, but a couple of weeks later it started again.

Feb 18, 2006The other day i was on a friends computer and they had loads of viruses and trogens etc, so i downloaded AVG free edition by Grisoft, and then after 1 hr 30mins the full system scan i did, finished and it came up with 29 virues etc, i was given the option to 'heal'all the files which i did, and then i was told, i had to restart the computer for any changes to take affect, so i did this, i went to log on to a user profile, it said logging on... and as this was the first time i had clicked the user profile, i caught a glimpse of what ever the background had been set to on the profile, but then it immediately goes and logs off, and says savings settings.etc, so i try again, and this time its so quick at logging straight back off that all i see is, logging on.saving settings.logging off.and this happens with every user profile, including in safe mode and the admin user profile, i really dont know whats happened i dont wanna re format the computer as its not mine, and my friend will lose all their work, any help given on resolving this issue is very much appreciated as i really dont know what to do, and i cant lose any of the work already on the computer,

Nov 17, 2008Whenever I start my PC, 90 percent of the time it loads to the desktop but explorer.exe wont run. If I start Task Manager and run it from there, for the first few minutes an error pops up saying I don't have admin rights to access the file, but then later on it runs ok. But then, when it does load, only the volume control will load on the start bar, and if I try to access anything, (internet etc.) it doesnt work at all. Also my Folder Options in the Control Panel have disappeared, and Ive tried many ways to get it back, such as running gpedit, and it also wont let me access the registry, saying I dont have admin rights, even though I am the only user of the PC, and I have full admin rights. Sometimes it won't load at all, just booting to a black screen with the pointer stuck in the middle, and I have to restart it to get it to do anything.
If I run the computer in safe mode, the explorer bar has a 50/50 chance of loading on startup, and I still have the same problems. I ran Webroot Spy Sweeper, which picked a few spy cookies and whatnot, but nothing significant, but it seems to be getting progressively worse every time I restart the PC.The PC also refuses to boot the XP startup disk, cos I wanted to Repair Windows to see if that would fix the problem, and also trying to reset to default with BIOS and using MSCONFIG didnt work either. Im pretty sure Im forgetting something else that was quite important, but I cant remember what it is.... also System Restore has been wiped clean, so I cant restore my PC to an earlier time... I tried running a Virus scan using Virgin Media antivirus and Webroot Spy Sweeper Deep System Scan, but no luck, both just picked up minore spy cookie and stuff

Feb 3, 2009I partitioned the blank hard drive on my desktop computer into C:/ and left about half of it unpartitioned to install XP on later. I installed Vista on C:/, and a while later installed XP. Once XP installed, I couldn't dual-boot back into Vista, so I tried microsoft's commandline hack

and after that Vista ran fine but XP will no longer load (When I select the "Older Version of Windows" from the boot menu it returns an error immediately saying that a vital file can't be found). I think the problem may have something to do with how Vista thinks the drive that XP is on is F:/ and Vista is on C:/, but XP thinks the drive it is on is E:/ and Vista is still on C:/
Soft Resetting An Pc - On The Admin Account Nothing Loads ?
Jan 7, 2009she clicked on one of those web ads and now it is loaded with spyware and malware, cannot conventionally get on admin account, and on the limited account it barely works (on the admin account nothing loads, cannot run explorer.exe either) on the limited all system functions are disabled (system restore etc)
