Can Install Internal HD / Pre-loaded Into Another Tower?

I decided to help out an older friend upgrade their computer. I had an old tower lying around minus a Hard Drive, and I figured that I could remove my friends Hard Drive from his PC and pop it into my Tower and away he'd go. Well, it didn't work. The PC seemed to boot fine and showed the initial text, but when it came to the Windows XP loading-part of the boot process, the monitor flashed white for a millisecond then went blank and the power light turned to amber, then off altogether.I disabled my ATI Graphics card, then tried again with no luck so I looked in BIOS but couldn't get it to detect the drive which is a Seagate Barracuda 40GB drive.I did however notice that the HD was listed as Secondary Slave. I was able to move it up to Primary Slave by moving the jumper but couldn't set it as Master. I even tried with the jumper removed. In fact I don't recall whether or not there was a Secondary Master there is a DVD/CD Combo drive installed so maybe that was set as Secondary Master? I'm afraid I can't remember.
I then tried connecting the HD to the same cable as the DVD/CD drive with no luck. The HD is an IDE and my original HD was also a Seagate IDE drive. Also FWIW, the last time I used my Tower with an IDE HD installed ( only months ago) it all worked perfectly.After a few hours I called it a day.So, when I returned home I realised that the DVD/CD drive was probably throwing a spanner in the works and I should have unplugged it to see if that would get a result.Finally it dawned on me that my friends internal HD would have all the drivers pertaining to his particular set up (Mobo, etc) but not the drivers for my mobo and maybe that's why Windows didn't boot up.I'm left wondering if it's even possible to do what I'm trying to achieve, or would my friends IDE Hard Disc need to be wiped before installing it into my Tower? I have the ABIT VIA-1.31M driver disc that came with my mobo, but don't really know where to go from here other than to try to install the drivers for my Mobo onto my friends HD before I remove it from his PC and install it in the one I want to give to him ..
I've been trying to install windows xp from a cd onto my dell c400 notebook which does not have an internal cd drive. Thus far I've tried to pre-load the installation files on the hard drive and boot from them, use windows PE to install off a network cd drive, and install off an external usb cd drive
I was given a brand new Compaq Presario SR1910NX recently (I have 2 other heavy duty computer I use for video-editing, etc.). It is one of those "pre-loaded" machines with 2 partitions (one for OS; other for backup). The operating system is XP Home and plenty of bloatware. I don't plan on doing anything fancy with the machine - just some basic stuff like maybe a music server, check email, I would like to do a clean install with Windows XP SP2 (primarily to get rid of the partitions, bloatware, and upgrade OS).
internal hard drive delete all partition and create a ntfs partition. (due to some problem)I put the windows xp disc to boot ; Ntldr is missing. (boot prority set to cd)I extract Ntldr and ndtect from the windows xp disc and create boot.ini, then put all three file to the internal hard drive.This time it said hal file is missing.
Recently I haven't been able to install certain programs due to Internal Error 2908.When I press OK in the message box another one opens and all I can do is kill the setup program in Task Manager.I guess this is some sort of registry problem.
I'm looking for Tapisrv (Telephony Service). I've looked under MMC services panel, and it seems to be missing. I've added an old internal 56K modem after the install. While everything seems to have installed okay, the computer seems to think that I have no modem (drivers are okay). A browse through the event log shows that the Tapisrv is n/a. Are all services not installed for the first time? If not, then how to add a service? I've just moved to XP, so I'm unfamiliar with it.
I'm getting ready to reinstall XP Home on a Dell Dimension 2400 and when I run SIW, Everest and Belarc they all come up with the same Windows 25 character product key. But when I look at the sticker on the side of the tower there's a different product key. Why are the keys different and which one should I use?
i got an Antec Nine Hundred and have 9 drives. Few of those are backups of the others. How ca i turn off (stop spinning) only some of them to preserve their life and turn on again to do backups. Without disconnecting Molex connectors. Is there some software or a function in XP to manage power on/off the 12 volts Molex connectors.
When I make a dvd my tower starts making a loud noise like the fans are blowing very fast when the program is at the transcoding part why has my pc all of a sudden got really hot? the werid thing is when i open task manager and then minimise it and then maximise it the fans slow down for about 50 seconds my computers only 6 months old and it never happend in the 1st few months.
Running XP Home Edition. I run SP2 setup. It does it's inspections and the last text I see displayed before it gives me "an internal error occured" is 'checking product ID.' I checked the numerical product ID and it does not match those as listed as Pirated. This computer has several issues and really should be reloaded, but the user has 'misplaced' the CD's that came with the system. Below is the latest attempt at running SP2 according to my svcpack.log
My younger sister was playing on the "Neopets" website. She loaded up a browser-based game called "Shenkuu River Rush". As I understand, to do this, she needed to download the "3D Life Player". The game worked fine for a while, but then started to run slow, so she restarted the computer. When she restarted, it still ran slow. She was also running the latest version of MSN/Windows Live Messenger. Finally, she loaded up the game and the computer pretty much froze (impossible to do anything, and showed no signs of resolving) so I came and shut it down manually.When I switched it on again, the computer went into the usual "We apologize for the incovenience, but Windows did not start successfully." screen. Thinking nothing of it, I selected "Start Windows Normally" and hit enter. The screen stayed on the Windows XP loading screen for a while, then flickered to a BSOD (I couldn't out what it was at this point) and restarted. This time, I selected "Last Known Good Configuration", and the exact same thing happened. I then tried running it in Safe Mode (both regular and command line)
The computer came with Windows XP loaded on it (I think it might've been Home Edition?), but I had a Windows XP Professional disk so I booted up from that. The "Windows Setup" screen comes up, and at the bottom of the screen, as is routine, the "Setup is loading files..." message is present. Just when all the files are seemingly loaded, and the message at the bottom of the screen flickers to "Setup is loading Windows.
I have aquired an older laptop that has XP Home on it that has not had the windows Service Packs installed. I tried to load SP3 from a CD, but found that I needed SP1 or SP1a loaded first. Where can I safely get this outdated software ?
I'm trying to fix my friend Emachine that he got about a year ago, it has a 80 gig hard drive, 512 ram. When I took a look at it I tried to boot it up and it started to load windows xp and then just stopped and started over again and kept reapting this process untill I shut down the computer. I continued to us fdisk and format at the dos promt to format the disk and then tried to load windows xp over again. It got almost all the way done then it went to this big blue screen saying the windows couldnt be loaded and that I shuld check if there is any new hardware..ect, and there is nothing new in the computer. I than figured I would try killdisk and a few other methods to totally clean the hard drive thinking there could be a virus deep in the MBR and not matter what I do I keep getting the same message over and over. I may be over looking something or could be just having a blond moment as it were but I have been working on this for the last three days and I am running out of idea's.
tkrnlmp.exe could not be loade The error code is 4? I am stuck in the middle of trying to repair my windows xp professional 64 bit software. I am unable to get past this error.
three "Fatal Error Kernel32.dll cant be loaded" messages appear everytime this laptop starts up.........have no clue what's the problem is.HELP needed...plus i can't rigt click.....so i can't get much info but it iz a win xp dell latitude d610 intel centrino notebook.
I recently found that my Games folder was empty. When I try to re-install the games from my XP Pro cd, I get the errors: "Setup cannot copy the file sol.hl." etc. If I cancel and try to continue setup, It just gives the same error from the next item.I tried to uninstall and reinstall the Accessories and Utilities folder and recieved the same errors. The cd is a Genuine Windows XP Professional Upgrade. It includes Service Pack 2. Version 2002. The cd is not scratched or smudged in any way and I can see the files on it when I browse the cd. I also checked my cd drive by installing two other programs from two different cds. It works fine. There are several things that happened or I did to the computer before I lost the games but I dont want to get into the details if I dont have to (dont want to write a small novel). The most significant, I think is that I had to reactivate my copy of Windows, because I had removed my etherlink card (I only have dial-up here). Also I messed up some drivers and had to reinstall them. I'm not sure which caused the reactivation screen to pop up. When I reactivated, I couldn't connect to the internet and had to do it over the phone, so they gave me a different Product Key to use.I hope that information helps to explain my situation enough. I would just do a clean reinstall of XP, but am now afraid it wouldn't copy the files from the cd.
I have a sony vaio laptop model vgn-n220e and it came with vista which sucks by the way. I loaded xp pro on it and now i just need help finding drivers so i can get my power/battery settings back, wireless interent, sound so on, would really appreciated someone pointing me in the right direction
I have a windows xp laptop. Everytime I double click MY COMPUTER or Ddrive icons it comes up with this. I can right click and open the file though. Cheers for any tips. I have spybot loaded on my computer.
Another problem that occurred about the same time that the "about:blank" problem showed up was one that showed that something couldn't be loaded with McAfee when the desktop was coming up (a scripting problem), and that I had to select "yes" to have java scripts to work.
I down loaded fire fox and made it my default. Also I kept explorer. I decided that I didn't want firefox so removed it. Now I can't get explorer to open any web pages.
Been using Registaryfix v5.5 on my computer to check for problems, but the last time i used it i found that my computer seemed to hang when it loaded up windows. i used safe mode and restored my reg files using registary fix to their original state. it's working ok now but... should i trust this software, or is it because i don't know what im doing with it i should be carefull? I've posted my hijack this file also just in case i have any virus problems.
I have just partitioned my hard drive on my computer running Windows Vista, renamed the partition 'X' and I wish to install Windows XP Professional.I have loaded the disk, got the Welcome screen up, clicked the green Install Windows' button and I get This programme is blocked due to incompatibility problems'. It quotes the Windows version on the equipment is more recent than the CD version.It recommends finding a solution on line.Once I get to the Windows site, I don't know what to look for.Should I have done more in setting up the partition (which is already in NTFS format.)I have to do this myself as I am not in a locality with ready help on hand.I am running a Compaq with AMD Athlon 64 X2 D C Processor with 2.87GB of memory.
One of our computers (kids have at school) might need a reformat & XP Home reinstall. I'm wondering about the Product Key - we never had it. It is a Dell. XP Home was already installed. We have Reinstall discs. I am reading about reinstalling XP and it says to Have Your Product Key handy! I'm finding the Product Key can be ONLY be found "on the orange sticker on the back of the envelope holding the original disc." We never had original discs since XP was installed, so we don't have that enevelope or Product Key sticker - nothing. Those orange stickers seem to be the only way to find the 25-digit Product Key for XP. We have the reinstall discs and 20-digit Product Registration numbers (shown on the Registered to box on the system info box).If it turns out the computer will need to be reformatted and XP reinstalled, will the Reinstall disc know that XP was pre-installed by Dell and we didn't install it? How will it work? What information will I have to supply? (I've looked at the Dell site but feel uneasy.)
When a software loaded either from a CD or other sources is generally stored on C: disk where the system is located, now, I want to have all the softwares to be loaded stored on other disk , say D: disk. How could I configure?
While setting up a buddy's HP (no model #) desktop today with XP, we ran into this odd problem.We are having a very difficult time getting the on-board (embedded) peripherals (Ethernet, Audio and Video) to work.Almost always after loading up XP (fresh install), one is able to access the Internet by plugging in an active Ethernet cable (cable modem in this case)/But come to find out there was NO internet connection.
Further investigation revealed that there where NO drivers setup for the embedded (on-board) Ethernet, Video or the Audio peripherals.This desktop recently came out of corporate environment and had a sticker over the name of the motherboard. So we are unable to determine the make/model of it.I was however able to ID the Chipset. It's an Intel i848pG.We found what we "thought" were the correct drivers from Welcome to Intel.
I had to call a computer tech to repair my computer. The tech hooked his laptop to my computer and I believe he reflashed the bios and loaded software all from the laptop. How do you do that and what programs are needed.
