Turnoff Only Few Harddrive In Tower - 12 Volts Molex Connectors
Aug 27, 2007
i got an Antec Nine Hundred and have 9 drives. Few of those are backups of the others. How ca i turn off (stop spinning) only some of them to preserve their life and turn on again to do backups. Without disconnecting Molex connectors. Is there some software or a function in XP to manage power on/off the 12 volts Molex connectors.
My friends computer needs reformatted after getting messed up by some nasty malware. He doesn't know where his recovery disks are so I tried using mine but it isn't recovering. I have the CD-ROM set as the first in line in the boot order. We both have HP's but different models. I noticed mine uses SATA connectors where my friends uses IDE connectors to connect drives.
One of my computers is an HP Pavilion 7955, 512 RAM, Firefox, and has been running on XP Home for quite a while with no problems. I also have NAV 2006, ZoneAlarmPro, AdAware6.0 and SpyBotS&D. I have two desktop PCs and one laptop connected to a cable modem and Linksys wireless network. Lately, however, when I reach some web sites, the screen comes up fine, but the horizontal progress bar (with the green squares) above the taskbar goes all the way across but does not turn off, and my cursor keeps the hourglass figure as though something is still running. This slows browsing on the page. However, I can click on the STOP button and all is normal. I checked the processes on the Task Manager and it indicates taskmgr.exe as 2 or 3 CPU and the System Idle Process as 97-98. Occassionaly the vsmon.exe comes on showing 2 or 3 CPU for a few seconds. So, apparently nothing else is running in the background that would stop the page from loading completely. Two days ago I upgraded to WinXPw/SP2 and upgraded from Firefox 1.5.0.8 to 2.0. That did not fix the problem.
I decided to help out an older friend upgrade their computer. I had an old tower lying around minus a Hard Drive, and I figured that I could remove my friends Hard Drive from his PC and pop it into my Tower and away he'd go. Well, it didn't work. The PC seemed to boot fine and showed the initial text, but when it came to the Windows XP loading-part of the boot process, the monitor flashed white for a millisecond then went blank and the power light turned to amber, then off altogether.I disabled my ATI Graphics card, then tried again with no luck so I looked in BIOS but couldn't get it to detect the drive which is a Seagate Barracuda 40GB drive.I did however notice that the HD was listed as Secondary Slave. I was able to move it up to Primary Slave by moving the jumper but couldn't set it as Master. I even tried with the jumper removed. In fact I don't recall whether or not there was a Secondary Master there is a DVD/CD Combo drive installed so maybe that was set as Secondary Master? I'm afraid I can't remember.
I then tried connecting the HD to the same cable as the DVD/CD drive with no luck. The HD is an IDE and my original HD was also a Seagate IDE drive. Also FWIW, the last time I used my Tower with an IDE HD installed ( only months ago) it all worked perfectly. After a few hours I called it a day.So, when I returned home I realised that the DVD/CD drive was probably throwing a spanner in the works and I should have unplugged it to see if that would get a result. Finally it dawned on me that my friends internal HD would have all the drivers pertaining to his particular set up (Mobo, etc) but not the drivers for my mobo and maybe that's why Windows didn't boot up.I'm left wondering if it's even possible to do what I'm trying to achieve, or would my friends IDE Hard Disc need to be wiped before installing it into my Tower? I have the ABIT VIA-1.31M driver disc that came with my mobo, but don't really know where to go from here other than to try to install the drivers for my Mobo onto my friends HD before I remove it from his PC and install it in the one I want to give to him ..
I'm getting ready to reinstall XP Home on a Dell Dimension 2400 and when I run SIW, Everest and Belarc they all come up with the same Windows 25 character product key. But when I look at the sticker on the side of the tower there's a different product key. Why are the keys different and which one should I use?
When I make a dvd my tower starts making a loud noise like the fans are blowing very fast when the program is at the transcoding part why has my pc all of a sudden got really hot? the werid thing is when i open task manager and then minimise it and then maximise it the fans slow down for about 50 seconds my computers only 6 months old and it never happend in the 1st few months.
I know what to do but i am bit curious on the formatting bit. I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive
I reformatted my hard drive due to OS issues, I was running a trial version of Server 2003 along with XP Pro, and I had to get rid of Server 2003 because it was conflicting with XP Pro, and so the only way to do that was by reformatting both hard drives including XP Pro because Server 2003 was acting as the dominant OS, so I backed up all my ****, and reinstalled XP Pro, but now I get this hard drive problem that it says only 51 Gigs are remaining on a 250GB Hard drive, when the only thing installed on that hard drive is XP pro and maybe 15 applications, I tried using every program I can think of to find hidden files that equal a huge size but nothing shows up
My computer operated windows XP sp2, and have 3 hard drives conntected 1. HD 0 is 160 GB divided into 2 partiotions, one 20 GB containing the system the other 140 Gb containes data directories and film directories2. HD 1 is 120 Gb connected through mobile rack and also contains data directories and film directories3. HD 2 is 200 Gb connected through mobile rack and contains only film directories.Untill thursday night everything was perfect, but when i I opened my computer friday morning i found the following1. HD 0 second partition all film directories completly disappeared and the free space is 40 Gb instead of the original 50 Gb
I got a trojan that attached to my browser. I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. It gives me an error, ESystem Volume Information is not accessable, access is denied.I am trying to find a way to either resize E: to 1GB or smaller and move that 169 GB back to C: or get rid of E: altogether and put all the missing space back on C:
about two yrs ago my dad made a massive mistake of making two partitions on my laptop, and giving the C: only 2gigs of the partition, and the D: 28-29gigs. I wanted to format my computer completely anyways, and would like to know how i can format my computer and merge these two partitions. I have the formatting disks, but it never goes to a screen asking me about my partitions, it just formats everything on my C: (my default drive), but keeps everything on my D: intact (games, files, etc.).
Recently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.
i had done this many times before but have never stopped at an error like this from reformatting and installing a fresh xp on to a harddrive. I was trying to reformatt a brand new xp onto the harddrive cause for some reason the old one won't load up to desktop and it says system32/config is missing or something and needs reapir but i had try to repair several times and it freezes. So when i put the xp disc in it ask me to press f8 to agree and stuff to install windows XP just after that, it says at the bottom searching for pervious version of microsoft windows, i had restarted many times and tryed again but nothing ever happens it just says it. I even tryed leaving it to load for 14 hours and nothing happened..... im guessing something from the pervious version of windows was corrupted so it wouldnt install a fresh copy. But i really need u guys help on this. Can someone tell me how to fix this problem all i want is a fresh copy of xp on the harddrive and all the windows gone.
I was just wondering, is it possible to install 2 versions of XP Pro on one hard drive? This is because i have 2 versions of XP Pro, one in English and one in another language, so i was wondering if it would work. Also if it is possible, do i make separate partitions for each OS? If someone knows any good sites which is about this topic or has good tutorials of what i'm trying to do.
I bought a new HDD for my Laptop and I need to image copy my old HDD to the new one. I want to do image copy so I don't have to install everything again.
My Laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, but it does have USB2.
Set a sub woofer with no magnetic shielding right next to my computer tower for about 10 hours or so. I mean you can see the sub woofer effect the monitor when your holding it from about 8 inches away, so should I be worried about my hard drive? The computer appears to be functioning normally, but still, it would almost seem crazy for it not to be damaged. I don't know what difference it makes but here are the specs
Windows 2000 pro Small master harddrive was full installed an old harddrive from another computer an 80gig axs a slave. it shows it is drive letter F and can open it I deleted all the files that were on it so it is empty. Itshows in computer managment but how do I get it so I can put folders, files and like put the antivirus on that drive, I think I did something wrong but don't no what it is. It shows in computer management as Drive F and I put it as NTSF like the master drive
I have been running Windows 7 RC beta on a new 1tb harddrive and installed XP Pro on a partition in the D:drive. When I rebooted all that I could get to reboot was the new install of XP Pro. Is there a way to select which system I can reboot from or toggle between them? Hope you can help? Thank you. I am running a Pentium 4, 2 gb ram, 1 tb harddrive.
I am running windows xp pro with all updates on a intel III 1000 processer with 2 250gb hds. my ISP runs an antivirus and I run Norton antivirus and Spy Sweeper. Late yesterday windows did an automatic update and I installed them. This morning I cannot boot on the hd with the updates. I reach the window that displays system info in b/w. At the bottom of this screen are two sets of two symbols a Y followed by an infinity symbol. On this hd I do not reach the point of going to safe mode. I booted on the second drive but it is not up to date (luckily?). I cannot determine how to remove the updates from the first drive. I tried System Recovery, I get a message that it is corrupt and do I want to send a message to Microsoft.
I'm getting extremely frustrated with a problem I keep encountering trying to install a new SATA Hard Drive. I connect the SATA HD power & data cable I prepare a FDD with the necessary HD Cotroller Drivers from the motherboard utilities CD I boot the PC I insert my XP Pro (SP2) CD The PC boots from the CD I press F6 when prompted for 3rd party drivers When prompted, I install the necessary drivers from the FDD I then get to the bit where I chose to install Windows rather than do a Repair - when I select install, I'm told that no HD is present & that I need to exit by pressing F3 I've tried removing RAM to see if any is dodgy but still encounter the same problem.
I've attached the new SATA HD to a different PC & everything moves on perfectly but I quit before formatting the drive as I want to do a clean install on the other PC. I'm beginning to think that there might be a problem with the Motherboard but am open to suggestions (the old HD is stuck in an infitinte boot loop & am unable to slave it to another HD as it wont respond - maybe caused by a Motherboard problem?).
After my last hard drive took a nosedive, I went out and bought a Western Digital Serial ATA 500 gb harddrive. I've physically put it in my Sony Vaio Desktop. I am trying to install Windows XP Professional now. When I get to the Setup screen is says Unknown Disk. I've already seemed to install the drivers for the new harddisk (they provided me a CD to install the drivers, it came with a program called "Lifeguard Tool" or something like that.
I have tried pressing F6 to install a RAID driver using the Windows setup... I pressed S... but then I find out I need a floppy disk drive... even if I had one, the box only came with a CD and not any floppy disks. I've tried slipstreaming Windows xp cd, service pack 2, and the drivers onto one bootable cd, it did not work... i'm too tired to go in there and find out why. *sigh*
Reformated and reinstalled windows xp. after instalation finished.i noticed i actually have 2 versions of xp home on my harddrive, how do i remove one without it effecting the other? i did this once before thur the reg ( i think) but i cant remember how.
I recently bought a WD 74GB Raptor harddrive to install XP on, but I'm having problems. Every time I load up XP setup from the setup CD, when it gets to the part where the installation options menu is about to appear, as it tries to boot windows from the CD, I get a BSOD and have to restart. I've tried running the CD with my other 80GB WD IDE hard drive inside and it doesn't cause this stop error. I've been screwing with this for 2 weeks now trying everything I can find on google and forums to fix this problem. I have the correct SATA drivers for my board as well for the drive of which I hit F6 for at the beginning of setup.
My question is simple, is there a way to pick some of the files on the computer (40GB of them) and somehow back them up on the hard drive, and the format everything else.I'm using Win XP. If it helps I also have Nero 8 with Back it up but I'm not sure if that's the answer.
My computers motherboard got fried a while back so I got a new one installed from a pc shop. They also reinstalled xp for me. Been working fine up until recently when I had to update norton. Once I installed my new norton and tried updating its protection it completely collapsed my xp so I had to try and re install xp mysellf only to find the same symptoms that many other xp installers appear to be suffering from. On installation process my hard drive was not detected. I tried other routes such as changing the bios settings disable sata control in the peripheral settings and I also tried making my own xp install cd including the drivers needed for the xp installl to be able to detect the hard drive but was unsuccesssful.
i just bought a new 82 gb hard drive but for some reason im havign troubles installing windows , i have another hard drive that has xp pro , how can i use my other hard drive with windows and also use my new one for space?
i loss close to 100kb evry second, maybe even faster at times, i deleted some files and ended up having 1g of free space, within two days i was back to zero im not even dl things, when i do a scan with spy ware doctor and adaware, i see it looking through my c drive and theres like thousends of pornographic things that when i thy and serch for then in my c drive i cant find, i cant even run adaware or anything because it is never ending, it just shows all this bad stuff forever, i cant wait a week for a scan i just dl hijack this and im not really sure what its gonna help me but i did a scan and im gona send it just because thats why i see on this web site alot......the reason i know im loosing space is my os gives my a pop up message that im running low on disk space
For some reason she said it might have got hit by lightening why she says that she don't know and I have no idea, anyway When you turn it on the light in the front of the computer that is green when you turn it on is not green it is the amber color and is blinking real fast constantly and the actual power button you push to start it also is flashing. Nothing starts up. YOu cannot hear the hard drive even try to boot or even run, nothing on the monitor and I looked inside and the fan for the cpu is not working. I think she probably had it running not knowing the cpu fan was not working and over heated everything but thats just a guess, Has anyone got an idea what I can try to see if it will start or not. I no she will have to get another cpu fan but does it sound like the hard drive is gone also?
I am trying to install a second hard drive as a slave. This has its own operating systhem win'98 with alot of info i do not want to lose so i do not want to format it.I have installed the second drive. It registers in the bios.It does not matter wether i set the order for booting to the old disk wth xp on it or the new disc with 98 on it.It does not work.If I try to boot to xp 1st it stalls after it shows the xp front page loading and then i get a black screen.if i try the slave disk as priorty I get a black screen(no loading screen) with two small lines flashing at the top left hand corner. If I dissconnect the slave drive it will boot from xp from the master.
for some unkown reason, I have another local disk on in my computer. Instead of my 'C' and my 'd' for recovery, I know have a 'e' local disk. It's 1 gig and about 600 mb used. There are four main folders, CLSetup, Documents and Settings, Program Files and Windows. Also a file call ntldr. In the programs folder there is common files and windows media player. in the documents and settings folder, there is defaut user, local service and networkservice. In the CLSetup folder, there is AP_Pack, inside that, 00, inside that, several files. Of course there are files in all the other folders too.
