In case you have read my other post(s), I am trying to sort out multiple problems (one related to Windows 7 and one related to XP).

laptop running XP SP3 (32-bit). Just before I take the big step (of doing a fresh install) I made a image on the D: partition with Norton Ghost 12. All went well. Now just in case murphy strikes, I tried to copy the image folder (created by NG12) to my external USB drive

Unable To Copy Large Files From External USB Drive?

Feb 13, 2007

I have an IDE drive housed in an external USB enclosure. When I connect it to my XP Pro (SP2) desktop it is recognised, and I can browse the folders and files. However when I try to copy a large number of files from the drive to a local hard drive on the desktop I get a "resource no longer available" error, and the external drive is no longer visible to the PC. I can then disconnect and reconnect the drive but only get back into the same loop.

Cant Copy Files From Internal Hard Drive To External Hard Drive Using Linux

Mar 5, 2010

I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I pulled his hard drive and put it in an external enclosure so that we can collect his data files on another system. When I try to copy his files Windows tells me "access denied". What do I need to do to have access to copy these files?

When External HD Is Almost Full And I Run Acronis Create Image

Aug 9, 2005

I'm looking ahead to the time when an attempt to do an Acronis Create Image will not be possible because there is not enough room on my external hard drive. Presently, I run a fresh Create Image monthly and now have three versions on my external drive. I can probably store a total of 5-6 before I run out of space.

Do you know what will happen when I attempt to run a Create Image and find that there is not enough room for another file?

And, does Acronis then give me a way to delete the oldest file from the E drive, or must I use some other facility, such as clicking on the oldest and selecting 'delete this file' from the selections in the vertical window on the left of the screen?

Image Restore From External Device - Boot From A WinXP CD.

Sep 1, 2005

I recently purchased a 160 GB SimpleTech SimpleDrive (external-USB) for backup purposes. The enclosed software StorageSync (Pro) did a satisfactory job of backing up, although a little slow (1 hr - 40 min for 11.5 GB, no compression).

Neither the on-line manual or website gives information whether a restore is possible from a catastrophic-type incident of the O/S, requiring restoration from a bootup procedure. There's no instruction about preparing a "Recovery CD." I have Ghost 9.0; would this be more advisable to backup the image file; and would Ghost see the external HD from its Recovery CD?

When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.

Cannot Create Image To USB HD With Drive Image 7

I ran check disc with repair and did not find any problems. Re-ran check disc from the boot disc that came with the application and found no problems with the disc. Tried again for a backup and received the same error. I am thinking it is one of the programs I have loaded has a locked sector or one of my processes that loads during boot is the problem?

Shows Up External Hard Drive As A Network Drive?

May 17, 2007

I've connected an external USB drive, but when I go to My Computer it shows it as a network drive. In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?

System Thinks External Drive Is Hard Drive

Feb 23, 2009

I turned the PC off to reboot when I though I was going into safe mode and went into regular mode instead. Now, it thinks one of my external drives is the C drive. On boot, I am getting a message that it cannot recognize find the system 32 windows config file (I'm paraphrasing).

I used the repair utility to get to the C prompt (which is pointed at the external drive) and checked the drive letters. I don't think the PC bios knows the hard drive is there.

I tried going into setup and reverting to factory installed configuration and that didn't change anything. I could not get it to recognize the hard drive.

Laptop As External ROM Drive For Another W/o Internal Drive

Apr 2, 2009

My sis has one of those Wally-Mart Acer mini laptops; NO CD-ROM drive in it (PS: way-bad idea! Never buy a computer w/o a dvd/cd drive in it!). She managed to delete the graphics card driver and so when that occurred and rebooted, nothing on-screen! Its there, you just cannot see anything in windows! And, because there is no drive, the CD with all the original programs cannot be run in start-up mode without an external CD-ROM drive

I want to use my (HP Pavilion zv6000 w/XP) laptop as that external drive to re-load her original CD, which (of course) has all the drives on it! At start-up, the Acer (also w/XP) has an option to start-up from an ext. drive, so it has that capability (obviously, w/o a drive of its own), but how to make my HP "look" like an external drive (via USB-to-USB hookup) is the problem!

Files & Transfer Wizard To Copy C - Drive Replace Original E Drive

Jan 12, 2006

This is really a question more than a problem. I'm running a PC with 2 HDs. I am changing the boot drive C: for a larger disk. Now ordinarily I would use a backup program like Ghost or whatever. Now my situation is slightly different in that most of my startup programs are installed on my second HD E:, the C: drive being the boot drive with XP installed.

What my intention is. Is to take out drive E: Then replace that with my new drive. Then I was going to boot in Safe Mode and use the Windows Files & Transfer wizard to copy the C: drive to The new drive. The last thing to do then is swap the C: with the newly installed drive and replace the original E: drive. I hope that all makes sense.

Did Not Use The External Drive

If you get another hard drive cause yours is almost full and there fore messing with the virtual.memory. If you get an external harddrive is it better to move the pagefile to the new hard drive which is what I was going to do change the drive for the virtual memory, then I got thinking, in case you didn't use the external drive all the time hooked up for whatever reason they you wouldn't have a pagefile on the old one does that make sense? I thought maybe it would be better just to move a bunch of pics and music to the extenal drive and leave the virtual memory (pagefile) where it is on the old drive, or would it make any difference??
