Sometimes my PC becomes very slow, and then I do the alt-control-del move to bring up the Windows Task Manager (I'm using XP), and under Processes in the Image Name column there's a thing called "bitsflap.exe" that's using 98, 99 percent of the CPU. I then end the process, and sometimes I'm lucky that it stops, and other times the PC freezes, and then I have to re-boot. I'm a 56k dial-up user.
View 9 RepliesI am using a Gateway Tablet PC. XP PRO; 2Gig ram; 80 gig hd; Within the last few days it has fallen apart. I have added nothing new. I boot it on and all seems well. I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

All of a sudden today (without any changes from me), when I try to click and drag, copy and paste, cut and paste, drag and drop, etc., using either the mouse or the keyboard shortcuts, my computer freezes and I have to do a hard reboot. No error message, nothing. I just do something like alt-x to cut, and the system freezes.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy grandfather has given me his computer to fix. The only problem is, he doesn't want to lose everything, though I think he's going to have to (or already has). He was doing a system restore (unnecessarily, may I add) and switched off the computer because it was taking too long (!). Now, Windows XP Home will not boot. The XP loading screen is displayed, then a blue screen for a split second, then it reboots. Safe mode does the same, and last known good configuration does not go past about 1/6 of the white loading bar at the bottom of the screen.So I thought I'd reinstall XP over the top. The problem is that the partition is now 'unknown', according to the Windows XP Setup, so it would appear the partition data is messed up. Thus, I cannot install XP without formatting.

i am on a mac but recently used bootcamp to install win xp professional 2002. when i installed it i used my product key and it worked fine and everything ran smoothly. but when i went to activate windows it said i had used all of the uses of the product key. i remembered i had used it three times and understood that but now i am wondering do i have to reformat to use a new product key or just enter a new one where it tells me to enter it. also if i can like take a product key off another computer or do i have to buy it. if i do have to buy and reformat should i get home or professional

Of late, it has taken to simply locking up after sitting idle for some time. Because it does this while sitting idle, I thought it might be related to powering down to stand-by or screen saver. I turned both of those of, ie, system is always on, no screen saver. It still happens.When it happens, nothing works. The mouse moves, but does not work. The keyboard does not work. It matters not if any programs are running or not. I am forced to cold boot.

In the last 6 months, the cursor started to freeze (not respond to mouse movement) and I had no keyboard or mouse control over XP. It said: "lsass.exe - System Error" "Object Name not found." I've had it for a year and haven't had any problems with it, but lately, when I try to shut it down through the start menu, it will shut everything down, log out, go to the welcome screen all like its supposed to. When it gets to the blue welcome screen, however, it will say something along the lines of "Shutting down system (or Windows or something) and it'll just hang there forever. View 6 Replies View RelatedThe my computer window instantly opens with all the correct icons displayed on the lest (view system information add remove programs change a setting...) but it shows no drives and I cannot click on anything. If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. After about 3 hours of working on it I gave up and reinstalled windows ( i did the windows repair so I didn't lose program files and such, i did not re-initialize). After re-installing everything was going fine until last night. The same exact thing is occuring again. Ive attempted running Ad-aware and its locking up after it finds a few files, I have no clue what its finding since its locking up. Ive tried booting in safe mode but it locks up at mup.sys. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.

Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.

The freezing occurs randomly sometimes it occurs just after startup while other times i can play a game for a few hours before it freezes. Ive been in a repair shop a couple times and they havent solved the problem despite replacing the mother board and power supply. They also reformated the computer and still get the freezing problem. Also when it freezes i turn the power switch off on the back and then i get a noise from the speakers that sounds like someone tapping on a the desk. How can i discover the problem?

View 8 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine is having a really hard time figuring out why her computer keeps freezing so I said I would ask you knowledgable people here. She hardly ever uses it and has almost no programs on it but just surfing the net or even poking around the desktop will freeze the computer. Nothing to do but reboot Ctrl-alt-del won't even work. She's tried spybot, adaware, hijack this, housecall etc and I checked it out myself. I'm sure there is nothing like that on her computer. So we can rule that out. She's installed a couple of RAM and HD testers all came back fine. She does have a firewire card installed and if she attempts to use it (for transferring movies) it will freeze for sure. This could be lack of RAM even though you only need 64MB (she has 256MB) as per the box requirements. Could the firewire be affecting everything else even when not in use? Could a windows file be missing? A setting somewhere perhaps? Hardware or software conflict?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI had some problems with my C: drive, and a friend who knew a lot about CPU's helped me a bit, here's what he did. He came over with a restore disk from his CPU, (even though we have different cpus) and it had Norton Ghost on it....when it booted up, it acted like a normal boot disk, and asked if I wanted to restore Windows XP, right along with Formatting my disk, we clicked yes and the Ghost program started. Only, it got done with about 16% of the format, the CD itself looked like crap, with a bunch of scratches on it...nothing really serious, but serious enough to stop the format. I tried cleaning it off the best I could, but to no avail. So thinking that the format failed, we could try something else, but the drive C: was already formatted, and when I tried to start it, this is what it said, "NTLDR is missing, press control+alt+delete to reboot.

OS = Windows XP with all updates I have treid memtest86 V3.3 as a boot CD and it did not report any error's at all.Tried various other diag's tools but all so no error's OS has been re-installed but again no joy.
Would like the forum's advice on how to fix this annoyance.Win XP Pro, SP2, fully patched, firewalled, protected, runs great and boots very quickly. Once booted up, should the user leave the machine and log off, that is when the problem shows up. Using the mouse or the spacebar, the logon screen appears, the PW is entered, and then 'blank desktop'. No taskbar, no recycle bin, no keyboard or mouse function. To escape this situation, a reboot, then everything is normal.

Whenever I boot the computer I get a Windows Installer box pop up trying to load SFR. It tries to gather data, gets halfway and then disappears. It does this twice before it stops trying. Now here is the strange part if I unplug it from power and try to boot again it comes up fine but if I try to shut it down BSOD WTF I have tried everything. BIOS has been re-flashed to latest version for my GA-7VAX MOBO and I have reloaded winXP.. I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening. Could it be my MOBO is going bad?

Last weekend, my computer began acting very slow, etc. Not too long after, the computer began to reboot itself about every 20 minutes without warning. It would just suddenly reboot, as if I'd hit the reset button. This obviously made me suspect it was a virus infection, so I restarted in Safe Mode and ran AVG. It gave me results and I hit the "Heal" button, deleting the entries.I assumed this was the end of it, but as soon as I restarted, the 20 minute reboots began to occur again. For the past few days, I've been trying to find out exactly what is wrong, but have been unable to do so. When I restart in normal mode, a message appears that says "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error". I'm hoping that you'll be able to help me out because I REALLY need that computer right now.
