I use Windows XP Home Edition. All of a sudden today (without any changes from me), when I try to click and drag, copy and paste, cut and paste, drag and drop, etc., using either the mouse or the keyboard shortcuts, my computer freezes and I have to do a hard reboot. No error message, nothing. I just do something like alt-x to cut, and the system freezes.

In the last 6 months, the cursor started to freeze (not respond to mouse movement) and I had no keyboard or mouse control over XP. I have to hard reboot to regain control of the mouse and keyboard in XP. In addition, any downloads from the web stop as well.In short,the entire XP becomes inaccessible.I use Zone Alarm for my DSL connection and it too STOPS and shows no activity . Ive upgraded and downgraded the video driver several times, Ive reformmated and reinstalled XP several times
View 3 Replies View RelatedSometimes my PC becomes very slow, and then I do the alt-control-del move to bring up the Windows Task Manager (I'm using XP), and under Processes in the Image Name column there's a thing called "bitsflap.exe" that's using 98, 99 percent of the CPU. I then end the process, and sometimes I'm lucky that it stops, and other times the PC freezes, and then I have to re-boot. I'm a 56k dial-up user.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using a Gateway Tablet PC. XP PRO; 2Gig ram; 80 gig hd; Within the last few days it has fallen apart. I have added nothing new. I boot it on and all seems well. I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

It told me to reboot so I did and now nothing happens. hte gateway screen comes up and nothing after that it just stays on the gateway screen. I can't enter safe mode and it will not read my recovery disk. I called gateway and they told me that because my computer is out of the warranty, they would be happy to help me and then gave me three payment options. I have come to grips that I will need to format the hard drive, but I just don't know how to get it to that point. the only thing that happens is the gateway screen and the fan runs really loud.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using XP Home SP2. Everytime I power on I lose 1gb of hard drive space. For example I have a 60gb harddrive on my laptop and am actually using about 20gb, however, if I power off and reboot and then go to Windows Explorer and go to C drive and check properties it will list my C drive at 21gb in use. f I reboot again and go to Windows Explorer and check C Drive and check properties it will say 22gb in use. I am now at the point that it says I am using 42gb of hard drice (C drive) even tho I am only using 20gb in actuality.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have my mother-in-laws 2kpro system that stopped booting last week with a blue screen stop error. chkdisk fixed some security descriptor problems, and i it has worked fine until today. w2kpro splash screen appears, status bar fills up, and the disk continues to chatter for a few seconds then bammmm... hard reboot. everytime. No safe mode/or safe mode command prompt.
ran wd diag on the HD it returned error 0223, which it said it fixed. chkdsk then fixed errors. So i thought i might be good to go. But still the hard reboot at the same point in the boot process. I deleted an old iomega driver, iomdisk.sys that seemed to be causing problems and that didn't help. Could this be a driver problem? any logs i can check via recovery console? Bad hardware? I sure would appreciate any help. I follow directions well and can even "rtfm" if necessary!
My computer:Toshiba Satellite M35X-S32980GB Hard Drive 480MB RAM Windows XP About a week ago, my laptop started freezing up a few minutes after I turned it on. Couldn't do Control-Alt-Delete, just had to press down power button for 10 seconds. I managed to get it to stay on long enough to copy my important files--it never locked up while I was copying files onto a CD, but almost always locked up immediately after I ejected the CD. Sometimes it would restart on its own rather than freezing up. Twice I saw a blue screen flash with some text on it, but it was too quick for me to see what error messages it had. I noticed also that it started saying that it had found new hardware on my computer and tried to install it. The new hardware that it said it found was: VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 Host Controller.I searched some forums for possible causes, and saw that someone had a similar problem and that their computer worked when the CD/DVD drive was in use--I've found that works for me too. It works totally fine as long as I have a DVD in the drive playing or on pause.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.

The freezing occurs randomly sometimes it occurs just after startup while other times i can play a game for a few hours before it freezes. Ive been in a repair shop a couple times and they havent solved the problem despite replacing the mother board and power supply. They also reformated the computer and still get the freezing problem. Also when it freezes i turn the power switch off on the back and then i get a noise from the speakers that sounds like someone tapping on a the desk. How can i discover the problem?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have observed this since i had my PC, while burning a CD, my computer would suddenly restart as is the reset button had been pushed,sometimes even while reading a CD (even tho i havent observed this in a while) and even sometimes as soon as i was in the BIOS (that was quite unconvenient for trying to reinstall Windows I admitt) The problem is that, since that problem appeared (that's indeed since i've had this homemade PC), i changed the CPU, the motherboard,the burner, the alimentation, the RAM, the graphical card, the modem, i mean, everything besides the floppy disk reader thing, i also installed another Windows XP (SP1 indeed, even tho it was badly burnt so whenever i install it there is dll's that won't be installed) and in spite of all these changes, i still get those reboots while burning, and that's quite annoying mostly that it kills your CD's. so what can it be due to? i'd really appreciate an answer from anyone who might have one, cuz i've had this problem for 2 years now and now that i'm getting out of room on my hard disk and need to back up lots of things on CD's.

A few days ago it started having this problem where the entire screen freezes up and I have to turn the computer off and restart. It freezes anywhere from 2 minutes to 4 hours into a session, but it freezes up every time. I don't know if this is related, but every time I restart, I get a message window from an application called Button Manager v1.83, that says: "No INITIO External Storage Device Found" and it has two buttons to click on, either : LED ON or LED OFF. I ran a virus scan, and an adaware scan, but it didn't help. My husband wants to throw out the computer and buy a new one, but there must be a way to fix this. Is it a virus

I click the yellow shield to install and when it finishes I reboot the computer. Now here comes the problem, then it does the same thing again with exactly the same updates. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a gateway desktop with windows xp home and it is constantly going into a reboot loop. Within 15 to 20 seconds of the computers start up it reboots itself and if left on it will continuously go into a loop. I get no blue screen flash neither, which I've heard a lot of people get with this problem. I have taken out the RAM cards and placed them in one by one seeing if RAM was the problem. It worked the first time, but after having one card in the second time it went straight back to a loop. So I crossed out RAM, I then took out my hard drive to see if it was causing the problem. I took it over to a friends house and it worked perfectly on a different PC. So that was out! I then thought maybe it was the PSU not sitting right, but it seems to be sitting fine. I cleaned my fans out as well thinking maybe it was just a simple problem. There are a so many different things that can cause this If I am correct? I just haven't the slightest of idea how to test my MOBO nor do I want to even go close to even touching it. I've also heard that WINXP service pack 2 suppously could cause this but I've just heard this. After trying everything in my personal arsenal I just did a clean reinstall of WinXP Home and everything seem to be working perfectly fine. The PC stayed on for about 2 and half hours after I installed the Wireless card then I turned it off for the night, thinking everything was fine. So I woke up to turn it on and to my surprise, it went into a reboot loop.

close my computer and double click it again it shows up right away.it seems to me that when the computer shuts down and then i restart that particular path to my computer is lost and it has to try to find it everytime i start the computer. dont know where to look or have any idea why this would be happening.
First time user, and at my whit's end with my computer. Bear with me as my computer knowledge is very limited. I have a Gateway 2.8 GHZ celeron with 1GB of ram. I also have a Radeon Video Card (forgot the exact model). I went to activate my computer from standby mode and it would not come up. I did a hard reboot and when windows came back up it was real slow and the computer monitor did not "turn on" until it entered windows. It seemed to be in safe mode. No icons were available on the desktop and the background I had was reduced in size and surrounded by the basic green background color. The other colors are also screwed up, the seemed very basic. I was able to get McAfees to come up and am currently running a virus scan. The start button with it's options is available but with very limited use. I tried a system restore, but the window would not appear. Whatever I open seems to open the window on the far left side of the screen beyond the reach of the mouse. Bottom line is the computer is, for the most part, inoperable.
