Reboot Delayed At Computer Settings

Sep 14, 2005

I have a few computers in my office that take 10 minutes to 30-45 minutes. When booting it never even gets to the logon screen, it stays at "applying computer settings" for a very long time, but does eventually allow the user to logon.

Hanging/delayed Computer Response

Jun 18, 2008

I've run a number of anti-virus programs including Kaspersky, Avira and Avast. I've used Spyware Terminator, Super Anti-Spyware and Ad-Ware. Numerous runs of these programs has not solved the problem. I have not added any new hardware or other programs (besides the spyware and anti-virus). I've tried disabling the resident antivirus program, Avast but that doesn't seem to improve the situation. I am Any ideas about how to proceed from here?

Settings Lost After Reboot

Mar 30, 2006

I've just setup a new pc with a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro. I have very little installed bar the few essentials.I'm not a huge fan of the XP theme so I have switched it to the classic theme. I also have a dual monitor setup and have my right hand side monitor as the primary, with my left as the secondary. Consequently, I change the position of this in the desktop settings area so I can just move the mouse left to get onto the second monitor. All was fine until I installed McAfee AV 2006 after which, whenever I reboot, my theme resorts to the Windows XP theme and my monitor settings are lost. I've tried removing McAfee to no avail and Google searches don't find anything.

User Settings Lost Each Reboot

Apr 19, 2005

tonight i was playing a game and for some unknown reason it unexpectedly quit, i was a bit annoyed so i switched off the computer without shutting it down properly. but when i switched it back on a few hours later it started up normally, but then when i logged onto my username (out of 4) it started up to the default settings for a user, for example background changed to acer one, start menu favourites lost and internet explorer settings lost (eg. favourites, icons). And to make things worse, i found out later that when i went into my documents from the start menu, all of my files were not there. but after further exploration, all my files were still there but were in my folder in the documents and settings folder. but it must have started up my username from a TEMP folder in the Documents and Setting folder. Also when i log into any of the other 3 user names, all the settings are how they are supposed to be and nothing is different. please help!!! sorry if this was too longer message but i couldn't condense it any more!

2000 Pro Forgets Zonealarm Settings Every Time Reboot

Mar 1, 2005

Running win 2000 pro SP4. every time i reboot, certain program settings are lost. for example, my zonealarm settings are lost, and all program net access authorizations have to be re-authorized, when the programs attempt to connect to the net. It will not remember the "always use this answer" option, that you can check in zonealarm to keep from having to continue to re-authorize the program each time it is run. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Delayed Startup

Oct 6, 2007

If I restart my computer (a Dell Dimension 9750) I get a flashing icon at top left of screen. None of usual keys or mouse works. In 5 minutes time it then comes to life and after a further minute or so I get normal desktop. This happens every time. I checked the MSCONFIG "Boot Ini" and it is OK. Has anyone come across this or known what is causing it ? I have tried System Restore and Registry check to no avail. I even tried the Dell restore which reverts to what you get when computer first received.

Delayed Write Failures Message

Nov 16, 2009

How do I tell XP to write the data NOW? It is very tiresome when one goes to shut down, and watch all the drives power up to receive those last bytes of data that would be lost forever if the system crashed. Is there a setting that allows one to force XP to perform these writes at an appropriate time,e.g., BEFORE powering down a disc? Or preferably with no delayed writes whatsoever?

Delayed Response To Taskbar Actions - Explorer.exe Related?

Oct 8, 2008

Am running XP SP2 and have had this problem for years - I think I even experienced it on my previous computer, but I'm not certain about that. Essentially, anything controlled by explorer.exe seems to experience frequent delays when I try to do simple actions. For example, clicking the Start button or the >> button to show more Quick Launch items will often take 5 to 10 seconds. Here's some detail: I click either of those buttons, and am shown the "pressed/darkened" version of them as normal. There is then a 5-10 second delay during which the button remains in the pressed/darkened state. During this time, anything related to explorer.exe does not respond - I can't click anything on the taskbar, go to the desktop, etc. I can, however still switch windows with Alt+Tab and work within the applications fine.

When the menu decides to finally show itself, it appears smoothly and as normal. Anything explorer.ext related I clicked on or tried to do during the delay is now executed (e.g. switching windows, going to the desktop). For a while (no idea on the duration, I don't use the taskbar much) following this, the taskbar will behave and respond to clicks rapidly. This problem always seems to occur after booting up - I try to launch my first application, and explorer hangs for a while... then eventually decides to respond again and let the application launch. Occurs regardless of if I wait for all harddrive activity to finish after boot. It almost feels as if explorer is being paged out into virtual memory, but that's just silly and shouldn't be necessary with 2gigs of RAM and not using anything particularly RAM hungry... There also doesn't seem to be any significant harddrive activity during the delays.

Delayed Write Failed Error - Drives Connected - PCI-E Controller Card

Apr 3, 2010

this has been bothering me for weeks and not a single thing I've tried has solved it. It's really a problem now, because I can't just not back my stuff up forever, I have to get this sorted out.I have a PC that I keep all my stuff on, run uTorrent on, my media center application, etc. It's got 8 HDDs. Half for storage, half for backup. 5TB overall (well less...but you know). I have an application that runs once a day to sync the drives with their counterparts. Everything was fine, until I got a new motherboard and CPU for the system.Now.....whenever I run my backups, this message will appear. Either very rapidly, or at some point during. The whole system will slow to a near halt (it can take 30 seconds for the mouse to register movement), and the only course of action is to turn the system off and on again. It's because of this Delayed Write Failed error (it pops up, sometimes immediately....and sometimes if you let the system keep running).

I've looked online for solutions. Some of them say to disable delayed write in the HDD properties. I've done that for most drives (the drives connected to the system via a PCI-E controller card have that tick box option greyed out. Nothing I've tried has made a blind bit of difference.

What Can Cause Computer To Reboot While Burning

Jul 13, 2005

I have observed this since i had my PC, while burning a CD, my computer would suddenly restart as is the reset button had been pushed, sometimes even while reading a CD (even tho i havent observed this in a while) and even sometimes as soon as i was in the BIOS (that was quite unconvenient for trying to reinstall Windows I admitt) The problem is that, since that problem appeared (that's indeed since i've had this homemade PC), i changed the CPU, the motherboard, the burner, the alimentation, the RAM, the graphical card, the modem, i mean, everything besides the floppy disk reader thing, i also installed another Windows XP (SP1 indeed, even tho it was badly burnt so whenever i install it there is dll's that won't be installed) and in spite of all these changes, i still get those reboots while burning, and that's quite annoying mostly that it kills your CD's. so what can it be due to? i'd really appreciate an answer from anyone who might have one, cuz i've had this problem for 2 years now and now that i'm getting out of room on my hard disk and need to back up lots of things on CD's.

Computer Keeps Going Into Constant A Loop Reboot.

Oct 29, 2008

I have a gateway desktop with windows xp home and it is constantly going into a reboot loop. Within 15 to 20 seconds of the computers start up it reboots itself and if left on it will continuously go into a loop. I get no blue screen flash neither, which I've heard a lot of people get with this problem. I have taken out the RAM cards and placed them in one by one seeing if RAM was the problem. It worked the first time, but after having one card in the second time it went straight back to a loop. So I crossed out RAM, I then took out my hard drive to see if it was causing the problem. I took it over to a friends house and it worked perfectly on a different PC. So that was out! I then thought maybe it was the PSU not sitting right, but it seems to be sitting fine. I cleaned my fans out as well thinking maybe it was just a simple problem. There are a so many different things that can cause this If I am correct? I just haven't the slightest of idea how to test my MOBO nor do I want to even go close to even touching it. I've also heard that WINXP service pack 2 suppously could cause this but I've just heard this. After trying everything in my personal arsenal I just did a clean reinstall of WinXP Home and everything seem to be working perfectly fine. The PC stayed on for about 2 and half hours after I installed the Wireless card then I turned it off for the night, thinking everything was fine. So I woke up to turn it on and to my surprise, it went into a reboot loop.

Reboot Computer Monitor Did Not Turn On

Feb 26, 2006

First time user, and at my whit's end with my computer. Bear with me as my computer knowledge is very limited. I have a Gateway 2.8 GHZ celeron with 1GB of ram. I also have a Radeon Video Card (forgot the exact model). I went to activate my computer from standby mode and it would not come up. I did a hard reboot and when windows came back up it was real slow and the computer monitor did not "turn on" until it entered windows. It seemed to be in safe mode. No icons were available on the desktop and the background I had was reduced in size and surrounded by the basic green background color. The other colors are also screwed up, the seemed very basic. I was able to get McAfees to come up and am currently running a virus scan. The start button with it's options is available but with very limited use. I tried a system restore, but the window would not appear. Whatever I open seems to open the window on the far left side of the screen beyond the reach of the mouse. Bottom line is the computer is, for the most part, inoperable.

Computer Reboot During System Restore

Aug 24, 2005

My grandfather has given me his computer to fix. The only problem is, he doesn't want to lose everything, though I think he's going to have to (or already has). He was doing a system restore (unnecessarily, may I add) and switched off the computer because it was taking too long (!). Now, Windows XP Home will not boot. The XP loading screen is displayed, then a blue screen for a split second, then it reboots. Safe mode does the same, and last known good configuration does not go past about 1/6 of the white loading bar at the bottom of the screen. So I thought I'd reinstall XP over the top. The problem is that the partition is now 'unknown', according to the Windows XP Setup, so it would appear the partition data is messed up. Thus, I cannot install XP without formatting.
