Computer Won't Shut Down Properly - Freezes At "Shutting Down System "

I've got a Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop. I've had it for a year and haven't had any problems with it, but lately, when I try to shut it down through the start menu, it will shut everything down, log out, go to the welcome screen all like its supposed to. When it gets to the blue welcome screen, however, it will say something along the lines of "Shutting down system (or Windows or something) and it'll just hang there forever. Once I forgot about it and returned in about an hour to find it still stuck in that screen, one that it should only display for a few seconds. I'm clean on the HJT log and virus-free

Turned comp off.When rebooted it came up with computer did not shut down properly. then gives u option of modes to start in .but will not start in any just loads white bar at bottom of screen .Then restarts repeats.

My friend's computer used to shut down completely when she pressed Start/Shut down, and she was using Windows 98. Now she is using Windows XP Home Ed., a message comes up: "It is now safe to turn off your computer" How can we get rid of that message so that the computer will shut down completely again by itself like it used to?
Is there a setting that we can change somewhere please?She would like to be able to use Start/Shut Down and the computer would shut completely down without any furhter steps.

One of the most common XP topic concerns shut-down or power-down issues. The solution can be as simple as going into Power Options in Control Panel and changing the "When I Press The Power Button" setting to: "shut down" or so complex that it simply can't be identified. I can start my computer, get to my desk top, my icons load as well as my anti virus icon on the task bar; however, once I click on an icon, an hour glass appears but my computer doesn't go to the program or web page I'm trying to open, then if I click another, my computer freezes I can not do a shut down but am able to log-off. I can access the web or my MS Office files via safe mode as well as MS Outlook. Can you tell me what has happen to my system?

I keep having problems at s/u, sometimes everything is ok and other times I have to shut down and s/u about 4 or 5 times. I have run spybot, adaware se, webroot spy sweeper and panda titanium av, but it still keeps happening.

The problem I am having happens when I shut down my computer. I shut down using proper procedure: start menu, shut down, then yes. The problem comes up after windows finishes logging off and shutting down. A blue screen comes up and I�m forced to shut it down manually

I have a problem with Windows XP. I didn't shut down the PC properly. After that when I switch it on, the windows progresses until the screen with blue button running right-left left-right for couple of seconds and then: black screen and nothing.I tried safe startup - it worked OK. I performed recovery to yesterday savepoint, but the result remains the same as above.

i got a new computer and gave my emachines T2885 Windows XP to my brother it was running great until he decided to wipe out the computer which i have done in the past with the system recovery disks that came with it and when he did this about half way thru the recovery we get a ghost.err now it won't even boot up. i have taken it to 2 gentlemen who both charged me and didn't do anything to it but 1 guy gave me a win crash cd and told me that i could get the computer back up and running with this cd. well i have no idea how to use this disk but he charged me 100.00 dollars anyway said he just didn't have the time to fix it that the disk is all i needed. well i am broke for this and still no fix for this computer.

I tried to uninstall AutoCAd LT thinking that may be causing a problem. I cannot remove it because the system freezes.The system ran fine a week ago. Sometimes my PC becomes very slow, and then I do the alt-control-del move to bring up the Windows Task Manager (I'm using XP), and under Processes in the Image Name column there's a thing called "bitsflap.exe" that's using 98, 99 percent of the CPU. I then end the process, and sometimes I'm lucky that it stops, and other times the PC freezes, and then I have to re-boot. I'm a 56k dial-up user.

I am using a Gateway Tablet PC. XP PRO; 2Gig ram; 80 gig hd; Within the last few days it has fallen apart. I have added nothing new. I boot it on and all seems well. I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

I am running windows XP Pro and work with multi media applications, during playback of these files or sometimes in windows media player (and at times for know reason at all) my system will just shut down - no warning at all. The applications are not particulary using up much memory in which case I have more than enough to support. My computer has been running fine for years but just this morning it has been shutting down for no reason. I'm running XP SP2. I started it up after it shut down, then it shut down again, only quicker. Tried to power on again but it powered off immediately, then it wouldn't power on at all. I gave the machine a rest for an hour then tried again. It worked for about two hours after that then it started shutting down again. I've run a few virus scans (in safe mode and in DOS) and nothing has come up.

I am on another computer right now. But when i boot up the computer. It lets me log in and ill be at the main screen where my icons are.Then after 2 minutes it always shuts down. If i dont log in and stay at the name menu screen it will still shut down after 2 min.The screen goes black and thats it. I cant see anything anymore. The power on the computer remains on though, cause the green power light is still on. I tried to do a quick virus scan but 2 min isnt enough time to do it.

For about the past month my computer (Toshiba Satellite laptop) has just randomly shut down. At first it would be only when I'd play games and it would just shut down, but now it has been shutting down for no reason at random times. Some days it will do it 5 or 6 times, other times it'll work fine for a few days and then I'll be browsing the internet or typing a message and it just craps out on me. I'm running a AMD Athlon X64 with 2 GB of memory and 2 HD with a total of 370 GB and WIN XP Pro as the OS. I experienced a problem with my system randomly shutting off and after methodically checking all components, I determined the problem was with the CPU fan. I completed all the repairs and tried to fire the system up only to find out I didn't remember what my newly changed system password was. I'd be interested in any other options available to find or restore my password other than rebuilding my hard drive. And yes, I will write it down somewhere next time.

When I go to turn off my computer or restart it, it tries to end task for the iexplore.exe. It will say the program is not responding and the computer won't turn off or restart like I asked it to. Also, when I open up my task manager and look in processes I see that iexplorer.exe is still running when I don't have any IE windows open at all. And the strange thing is I can't end task it and there's multiples of them. I have a problem when shutting down the computer. About 4 out of 5 times when I select shutdown, the computer hangs on the blue screen and I must force it to shut down by holding the startup button. Then on the next startup, about half the time, the system goes through a check.I am using XP2. I was told by Circuit City that this could be caused by spyware. I brought it to them for a fix, among other problem I have Spy Sweeper installed but even after a scan, the problem persists. Then recommended a clean install of XP2 but I am trying to avoid that route. One thing I do notice is that I have a constant correction on the startup scan with many files in a Temp folder of Spy Sweeper that are invalid. The system corrects itself, but then it happens again. Just to note, this shutdown problem was occurring before Spy Sweeper was installed.

I'm having a serious problem with my computer, and I feel that I have to type this as fast as I can because it's been shutting down very randomly lately.For the last three or four days, my computer has been completely dysfunctional? I suppose. At first, it just wouldn't turn on. I left it for a bit, and it actually would turn on, but it would run so incredibly slowly. I could barely open a program, and when I could OPEN them, they wouldn't run at all. After letting it sit for about two days, I turned it back on, and it works pretty okay for the first hour. The second hour it'll slow right back down, and then spontaneously shut down. I know this sounds like an over-heating problem, so I bought a really intense heavy duty laptop cooling fan to put under it. That doesn't help.
My laptop DOES get hot, but nothing significant, especially with the fan. I figured it might be a virus, so I installed Kaspersky. Kaspersky runs fine, until I get to about 83% and it will continue running, but it will never go past that 83%. (I've let it run for almost 6 hours). I tried Kaspersky in Safe Mode, but my computer spontaneously shut off then too.I have Word 2007 installed, and it won't save any files. It just says, "Word Cannot Save Due To A File Permission Error". And just doesn't. Playing video is useless, because it just stops halfway through whatever media is playing. I've down two system restores to two different points further away, and that hasn't stopped it either.

lately my computer has been randomly shutting down. Not while im doing anything specific, it happends at completely random times. I openned up my tower to see if it was dusty or something, sure as hell it was dusty but i cleaned it out ( blew in it ) and i felt the motherboard, it was pretty hot so i turned my computer off for a few hours but the same thing happends. the same thing happened to my friend but his problem was a fan wasnt working, but all of mine are working,i'm using a windows xp home edition, if u need anymore info, lemme know(ignore spelling/grammar errors i had to type this fast before my computer shut off again)

I just did a fresh restore of Windows XP Media SP2 from manufacturers restore DVD, and downloaded all of the Hot Fixes and updates from Microsoft. Everything was fine for about a day, but now the system boots, I get to the black screen where it asks you if you want to start Normally or in Safe Mode, or last known configuration that worked. No mater what I choose, it just shuts off.
This is the reason I did the full system restore in the first place.I dont know if this is related, but when I hook up the hard drive to my laptop to scan for viruses and spyware (you never know), the hard drive keeps shutting on and off. But it doesnt do that when its hooked up to the tower in which it came from, so it might just be the device Im using
