System Won’t Shut Down Properly - Very Slow System

One of the most common XP topic concerns shut-down or power-down issues. The solution can be as simple as going into Power Options in Control Panel and changing the "When I Press The Power Button" setting to: "shut down" or so complex that it simply can't be identified. Sometimes it's a third party product causing a reboot at Shutdown (ie, Roxio CD 5.0 - and there is a fix). Unquestionably, one of the best sites for coverage of this topic is at AUMHA.ORG. My computer has really been slow last couple days. Loading programs and pages off and online. Pages not closing properly, i.e. freezing on screen then disappearing slowly
I've got a Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop. I've had it for a year and haven't had any problems with it, but lately, when I try to shut it down through the start menu, it will shut everything down, log out, go to the welcome screen all like its supposed to. When it gets to the blue welcome screen, however, it will say something along the lines of "Shutting down system (or Windows or something) and it'll just hang there forever. Once I forgot about it and returned in about an hour to find it still stuck in that screen, one that it should only display for a few seconds. I'm clean on the HJT log and virus-free
Over the last two weeks, my XP started to take longer and longer to shut down. Now, it doesn't and I have to manually press the startup/shut down button. XP is 2002 version; SP ;, 2.3 GHz CPU; 2.29 GHz and 0.99 GB RAM.My virus/security suite is Zone Alarm.I tried to use System Restore and though it does shut and restart the computer, system restore tells me it could not restore the computer.

Turned comp off.When rebooted it came up with computer did not shut down properly. then gives u option of modes to start in .but will not start in any just loads white bar at bottom of screen .Then restarts repeats.
I have Windows XP and recently when I click on turn off the computer to shut it down or re-boot it sort of slows down and it takes a very long time before it finally shuts down, if at all. The problem I am having happens when I shut down my computer. I shut down using proper procedure: start menu, shut down, then yes. The problem comes up after windows finishes logging off and shutting down. A blue screen comes up and I�m forced to shut it down manually
My friend's computer used to shut down completely when she pressed Start/Shut down, and she was using Windows 98. Now she is using Windows XP Home Ed., a message comes up: "It is now safe to turn off your computer" How can we get rid of that message so that the computer will shut down completely again by itself like it used to?
Is there a setting that we can change somewhere please?She would like to be able to use Start/Shut Down and the computer would shut completely down without any furhter steps.
I have a problem with Windows XP. I didn't shut down the PC properly. After that when I switch it on, the windows progresses until the screen with blue button running right-left left-right for couple of seconds and then: black screen and nothing.I tried safe startup - it worked OK. I performed recovery to yesterday savepoint, but the result remains the same as above.
I turned my pc on today which runs on Windows XP Pro. Every time the computer starts I get four or five options Safe Mode, Safe mode with Prompt, Last well know configuration, etc (most ppl know what I mean here.)
Every time I click on any of the modes my computer restarts. Just before the pc restarts I see a blue screen quickly flash (i know this is know as the 'blue screen of death'.)
I have put in my XP cd but i cant get it to run so i use recovery not even when I run it from my BIOS Screen

I did everything, but the one part where it says to turn up the inital and maximum page file size to 1.5x and 3x respectively of the amount of ram in your computer, i had a problem with. I have 1536MB Ram in my computer, and it will only go up to 4096 in the maximum thing. Does that mean i'm losting like 200-300 mbs of ram? What else is there to do?
I did system restore, and after my pc restarted, I was waiting for the system restore box that will say "Restoration Completed/Incomplete...", i waited for it for about 30mins or so and got frustrated... I turned OFF my pc manually... and when i restarted back my pc is working but there are problems.
-My system restore will open but it only has a clear white window.. nothing in it but white screen.
-I am not able to use the USERS window under control panel, getting the same thing for it, just a white window.
-My mcafee security program is also not working, getting that same white window.
i am able to see the title bar of the window but nothing else aside from that.
running win xp home with sp2 installed, ok here goes, i dl pc mighty max other night and ran it, wasnt happy with prog so started to uninstall, comp crashed so restarted. on restart get message xp not registered, so regestered over phone ok,but know i have a grey task bar,when i try to get to win update get first page then get errror message, msn stopped working cant access some pages on net, spoken to micro help advised to try and run repair of system but i have no restart points in system tool or they dont work, i have tried to do repair buy booting from my xp disc but get massage no harddrives found,
Im not sure if this is the right place to post this but here I go. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with WXP. Everything was fine 'till a day ago, i dont know what happened but suddenly the System Tray Icons started to be very slow, when I double click on them it takes a few minutes for them to open, when I right click on them the options just get stuck there and wont go away blocking the view of the other icons, and it wont let me choose any of them, the volume icon and the internet connection icon will no change even if the volume or signal have changed. Also, the typing in any program became really reallly slow, but I fixed that already.
i have a computer that i recently installed windows xp on. I shut the computer down for the first time after installing windows that was all good but then when i started it up the next morning it wouldn't work.it gets half way through loading windows then flashes blue and restarts.after it restarts it gives me the screen were it says:start windows normally start windows safe mode etc it will start in safe mode then i can start it normally after restarting it but i would like it just to boot up the first time
I use cleaner but that's the only one i have. Are there any other good cleaners so that i can keep my system clean with out any virus problem and can operate my system properly.
I recently have had problems with my computer slowing down after clicking on programs such as Firefox. It takes about 40 seconds for the hourglass to go away and then the program will finally load. Other programs also. I have been using some anti-virus and spyware programs thinking I had a virus or spyware , such as Spyware Begone. It found a spyware and deleted it. I tried to use System restore and it only showed one restore point in January (the 27th when I first tried Spyware Begone), but would not restore to that date. I could not get Restore to go back to December. System Restore is on and running. Any suggestions would be helpful. I also used System Restore in Safe Mode thinking that would help, but it would not restore to the 27th. System Restore works, but after completing it the message says "could not restore to the 27th).
For the last couple of days my XP system will not shut down. It gets to the Windows Is Shutting Down stage and hangs, I waited for over an hour but it stays the same.I tried to use the System Restore to go back a few days but this will not work either.I've added nothing nor changed anything on the system.

i just performed a complete system recovery. started the computer, installed windows xp sp2 and sp3, went to the microsoft download center to get my updates and also got all my extras like, java, flash player, shockwave and direct x among many other updates. i also scan my computer with secunia just to make sure i had everything installed on my pc. i started noticing that my computer was working kinda slow.
I noticed lately that my computer has been running very slow and decided to snoop around in the services tab in the System Configuration Utility and MAN!! I have about 50 different programs running. I want to know what I can and cannot uncheck so my computer won't stop running altogether. I'm running XP Pro and a wireless network to 2 other computers in the house
I ALT+CTRL+DEL to bring up my processes and i noticed at the bottom of that window that SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS is taking up 80-99% so i watch it for awhile and it doesnt go down at all, the lowest i seen it was 77%.Now i have about 30-40 things running in the Background not a problem for my computer. I have 2 Gigs of RAM should be more then enough. but this process is really slowing me down.
I have xp sp2 installed in my personal computer when i shut down the operating system it asks me to end explorer.exe if i do not press end now it keeps on showing the message and do not shut down. it shows the same message to ccapp.exe but it is able to end the process but it is not the same with explorer.exe most of the time i have to manually end the process to shut down my system.
i got a new computer and gave my emachines T2885 Windows XP to my brother it was running great until he decided to wipe out the computer which i have done in the past with the system recovery disks that came with it and when he did this about half way thru the recovery we get a ghost.err now it won't even boot up. i have taken it to 2 gentlemen who both charged me and didn't do anything to it but 1 guy gave me a win crash cd and told me that i could get the computer back up and running with this cd. well i have no idea how to use this disk but he charged me 100.00 dollars anyway said he just didn't have the time to fix it that the disk is all i needed. well i am broke for this and still no fix for this computer.
Looking for a utility that will automatically shut off the PC at say 10:00PM. And can not be overridden by switching users or rebooting. My wifes son My step-son has a habit of staying up till 3am chatting completely forgetting about needing to be up in 3 hours for school. I've looked at some software available and am not convinced that he could beat the system by just switching accounts. Maybe something that would only shut down selected programs AIM My Space and the like.
I'm posting this for a friend whose computer was working fine then out of nowhere it's been getting a msg smss.exe has encountered a problem this system is shutting down please save all files and log off and it says something about a windows NT/admin then a bunch of other stuff that he can't make out fast enough then after 60 seconds the computer reboots he's running windows XP pro sp1 512mb of ram no sp800mhz Intel cpu 40gb maxtor hard drive.
Alright my computer just doesn't seem to be the same anymore. Sometimes my java doesn't work, my online media player doesn't come up and I keep getting anti-virus popups although I have a pop up blocker.
