View 4 RepliesOne of the most common XP topic concerns shut-down or power-down issues. The solution can be as simple as going into Power Options in Control Panel and changing the "When I Press The Power Button" setting to: "shut down" or so complex that it simply can't be identified. Sometimes it's a third party product causing a reboot at Shutdown (ie, Roxio CD 5.0 - and there is a fix). Unquestionably, one of the best sites for coverage of this topic is at AUMHA.ORG. I have taken the liberty of pasting the comprehensive information they provide below. Please take the time to locate your specific problem and read their suggested fix. If you still have questions, then by all means post them in the General Questions Forum.

XP is 2002 version; SP ;, 2.3 GHz CPU; 2.29 GHz and 0.99 GB RAM.My virus/security suite is Zone Alarm.I tried to use System Restore and though it does shut and restart the computer, system restore tells me it could not restore the computer.
For the last couple of days my XP system will not shut down. It gets to the Windows Is Shutting Down stage and hangs, I waited for over an hour but it stays the same.I tried to use the System Restore to go back a few days but this will not work either.I've added nothing nor changed anything on the system.

Looking for a utility that will automatically shut off the PC at say 10:00PM. And can not be overridden by switching users or rebooting. My wifes son My step-son has a habit of staying up till 3am chatting completely forgetting about needing to be up in 3 hours for school. I've looked at some software available and am not convinced that he could beat the system by just switching accounts. Maybe something that would only shut down selected programs AIM My Space and the like.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI havent a clue what the problem can be. I went downstairs for 5-10 minutes after recently starting up my pc came back to the pc completely shut off. It seems to do it either sporadically when im away from it or using it for long periods of time. I recently installed a brand new power supply Ultra 400 watts ATX power supply. It seems to be getting worse with time. Im currently running disk defragmenter hoping this issue can be resolved soon. I have a bad feeling it may be my motherboard
View 14 Replies View RelatedAbout 3 days ago, I was on my computer and then it just automatically shut off, then went to a blue screen. I don't quite remember what the blue screen said, but it mention something about disabling BIOS and disableing/removing any new software I had downloaded. I didn't download ANY new software, and I dont really know much about computers, therefore don't know what to do about the BIOs. It also did mention something about disabling caching as well. I thought this was a one time thing, so I booted up my computer again, and it happened at 14 minutes later, and then again and again. I tried doing a last known good configuration while booting up the computer, but than a bigger problem started. My mouse stopped working. It's a wireless Microsoft mouse, and I used the other one that I had, and that didn't work either. It seemed that the adapter didn't want to connect with the mouse, therefore just sat there with the light blinking.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got a Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop. I've had it for a year and haven't had any problems with it, but lately, when I try to shut it down through the start menu, it will shut everything down, log out, go to the welcome screen all like its supposed to. When it gets to the blue welcome screen, however, it will say something along the lines of "Shutting down system (or Windows or something) and it'll just hang there forever. Once I forgot about it and returned in about an hour to find it still stuck in that screen, one that it should only display for a few seconds. I'm clean on the HJT log and virus-free

View 5 Replies View RelatedI decided to use a computer at an Elementary school I work at in Japan. I switched it on and then checked my email and surfed the web. I decided to shut down the computer after I finished. The next day a teacher says do not shut down the computer because last night teachers could not use the computer. Is this just a security reason once you shut down you can't use the computer again for that day? I always thought it was simply reenter the password and reconnect to the internet again to use the computer again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery now and then when starting my pc (WinXP), it seems to enter a hanging mode. I know when the problem is occurring because the sound card icon doesn't show on the task bar.I don't know if all programs are non-functioning, but the internet connection and the sound card are not only when this occurs. The main problem: the pc will not shutdown. Bringing up the task manager won't work either, leaving me no choice but to shut off the pc via surge switch. What can cause this problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy new computer, running XP SP2, generally works fine. However, 9 times out of 10, when I try to log off or shut down at the end of the day, nothing happens. I've trying all the different ways of shutting down I know of (Task Manager, Start Bar, etc.), but nothing has any effect. I can only turn off the computer by manually hitting the power button.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an Alienware Sentia laptop with a 1.8Ghz processor, 1Gb RAM running XP Sp-2 It has AVG Firewall & Virus guard & I regularly run Spybot Search & Destroy. It starts up quickly & runs fast, I love it. until it's time to shut down. After clicking the red Shutdown button it takes nearly 90 seconds before the lights actually all go out. The screen does it's "windows is shutting down" bit & then goes black but the green LED for disc activity continues for 30-40 seconds which seems an age when you're just stood waiting for it.Anyone any ideas to speed it up? Or know why it does it (I won't mind so much if I know why) I'm sure it wasn't this slow for the first few months.
