I keep having problems at s/u, sometimes everything is ok and other times I have to shut down and s/u about 4 or 5 times. I have run spybot, adaware se, webroot spy sweeper and panda titanium av, but it still keeps happening.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy PC has been having problems starting.when I switch the computer on is that the screen will flash haphazardly for several seconds (several vertical thin coloured lines) and then go completely blank. I have to press the CPU switch on and off for close to a dozen times before finally the computer will start up properly. A message will then show saying Windows has not successfully started because of (I quote) a "recent hardware or software problem". This morning, an additional message came up and the system went on to perform a disk test. I have a lot of data stored so total system recovery is preferably not an option. Please can someone help & tell me what I need to do???! I am on XP and have a Compaq Presario 6150 desktop.

By the time I realised, I had turned the power supply off the computer had therefore not shut down properly.Tried to swith on today and I get a "Windows did not start successfuly message" with a range of options including safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start normally. No matter which one I choose, it gets as far as the XP loading screen then reverts back to the "Windows did not start successfully" screen.I therefore did the F8 after the Bios which took me to the advanced options menu. I disabled the auto restart and I get an error Unmountable Boot Volume - error code 0x000000ED.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager - after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later - my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing - actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off - when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either

I've had it for a year and haven't had any problems with it, but lately, when I try to shut it down through the start menu, it will shut everything down, log out, go to the welcome screen all like its supposed to. When it gets to the blue welcome screen, however, it will say something along the lines of "Shutting down system (or Windows or something) and it'll just hang there forever. Once I forgot about it and returned in about an hour to find it still stuck in that screen, one that it should only display for a few seconds. I'm clean on the HJT log and virus-free
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Windows XP Home Edition will not load up, I will start my computer and straight away I notice that it takes a little bit longer to detect my secondary Master device, after about 20 or so seconds it finaly loads up to a point where it will say Windows XP did not start properly. I have selected all of the SAFE mode options, it loads lots of drivers until it gets to a file called MUP.SYS and then it hangs there and does nothing more. I have also tryed to start windows normaly and with settings that last worked both of which froze at the Windows XP loading screen.
I have inserted a Windows XP CD that I loaned from a friend and I have tryed to reinstall Windows XP via setting the CD drive to load first in the BIOS. The CD seems to load files properly untill it reads "Setup is loading Wndows" and again it hangs here and does nothing more. I have tryed everything and I have now run out of idea's, I have read other forums that have said that its to do with the Hard Drive, I have replaced mine and still no change.
Recently I used the task manager to schedule some anti-virus and anti-spyware programs
at different times of the week, now, when i awake in the morning my computer is running,
even though it is not a scheduled run, it automactically comes on every day, even during
the course of the day ? My OS, Home XP V2002 SP2.
I am having problems starting my PC. Each time I boot up, the PC is very slow and it can take up to 10 minutes to see desktop icons on the screen. At first, it displays the Windows Welcome page, and this is displayed for about 3 minutes. Eventually, the desktop is displayed with the background picture,
the cursor is also there, but there are no shortcuts/icons are on the screen.
I just recently noticed when I went into control panel administrative tools computer management that my disk management add in/snap in is missing information.It should show me my drive numbers and more. Also there is no right click options when I try to use them on the partitions.Check the picture attached.Probably a microsoft tech would know the answer.

i have looked up fixes for this, and they say try a repair with your Windows XP disk, however, ive torn apart my house and can't find it. I really cant and dont want to reformat, one because i have a lot of files on my computer and 2, if i reformat, i would have to reinstall my modem,router,and ethernet, which i dont have disks for any of them (tore up my house again). Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor about 2 months my computer (Sony VAIO desktop, Pentium IV 1.39 mHz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP Pro, SP2) has been acting strange. I have checked the system for viruses and spyware with AVG and Symmantec and others- with no luck. I also did a Windows repair; it only got worse. I also used reg scrub.First, when starting up it gets hung up at "Windows starting up..." taking about 3 minutes to finally get to the user selection page. Once I login, it takes another 2minutes to fully open up. At that point, my mouse has a constant flicker and takes forever to open up IE (6.0). If I leave the computer for awhile, when I come back and move my mouse to wake it up- it has some new problems: I cannot type in numbers (num lock has no effect), when I type letters, they are in all caps (caps lock off), and when I go to my desktop to select a program to start, it highlights all of the icons and says basically "do you really want to start 38 programs at once".
View 11 Replies View Relatedrecently when i use grabit newsreader my pc shuts off by itself. it had never done so for the half a year before now when i used it.i think its my pc overheating. i tried dusting the inside a bit, and downloaded speedfan to show u guys what the temps are. the first pic is without grabit running. and the second pic is with grabit running. before i go thru a bunch of malware/spyware tests, which i dont believe is the problem, could someone please first rule out a simple fan problem?
View 14 Replies View RelatedProblem started with cd burner not writing through windows media player.I installed fireman and everything seemed okay.PC then starts rebooting itself at random.The past week it either won't boot up at all(it powers on but all the lights just flicker in a steady pattern while the screen remains blank) or it boots to the point right before the desktop loads then goes into the flicker mode.By holding down f2 or esc I can usually get the flicker to stop. The pc then tries to reboot again or just shuts off competely.I'm trying to do a xp repair this morning by booting off the cd.It will get down to 36 min to go and then goes into the flicker mode.

A blue screen comes up that says something along the lines of, "An unexpected error has occured and windows needs to shut down..." Then it gives some numbers, then underneath the only thing I remember it saying was "beginning dump of physical memory". There was more to it but I didn't write it down so can't remember, sorry! It's a blue screen with white writing. I've run anti-virus, I've defragmented, I've checked windows for errors and checked for adware.

I hope that someone can help as I'm sure that it's a pretty simple thing to correct, For the past few days if I leave my pc for about 15 minutes it just turns off as if it has gone into some kind of standby. I have to turn the monitor back on and wiggle the mouse and it starts back up with the screen exactly as it was before it went off. It isn't the same as going into standby as when i do that I have to use my user password to get back in. I don't have a screensaver at the moment but it kinda reminds me of one.

I then restart the PC with a computer switch and it goes through the process again and then shuts down correctly.I also notice recently that my PC takes a longer time to boot up when turned on.
