My PC has been having problems starting.when I switch the computer on is that the screen will flash haphazardly for several seconds (several vertical thin coloured lines) and then go completely blank. I have to press the CPU switch on and off for close to a dozen times before finally the computer will start up properly. A message will then show saying Windows has not successfully started because of (I quote) a "recent hardware or software problem". This morning, an additional message came up and the system went on to perform a disk test. I have a lot of data stored so total system recovery is preferably not an option. Please can someone help & tell me what I need to do???! I am on XP and have a Compaq Presario 6150 desktop.
I keep having problems at s/u, sometimes everything is ok and other times I have to shut down and s/u about 4 or 5 times. I have run spybot, adaware se, webroot spy sweeper and panda titanium av, but it still keeps happening.
Last night Windows automatically began to install updates as I was logging off. By the time I realised, I had turned the power supply off the computer had therefore not shut down properly.Tried to swith on today and I get a "Windows did not start successfuly message" with a range of options including safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start normally. No matter which one I choose, it gets as far as the XP loading screen then reverts back to the "Windows did not start successfully" screen.I therefore did the F8 after the Bios which took me to the advanced options menu. I disabled the auto restart and I get an error Unmountable Boot Volume - error code 0x000000ED.
I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager - after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later - my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing - actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off - when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either
I have Windows XP and MS Office XP (2003) loaded on my PC. Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.
Today I did an update on my norton security 2005 and updated my ewido suite. After I updated both of them I restarted my computer in safe mode so that I could run ewido because for some reason I was getting a notification that I had a keylogger on my computer. I kept blocking it but it kept coming back. This is the first time anything like that has ever been on my computer. I put a 56k modem and aol on it because I moved and I dont have cable modem here and thats when I started to have problems with my comp. Well, when my computer went to start back up it froze, so I manually restarted it. When it started back up it came to the screen asking to start up in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command line, last known working conditions, and normal start up. I tried to start in safe but it started loaded everything and froze up while it was doing its check. It did the same thing in all the safe modes. So I tried it in the last known working option and it went to the Windows XP black loading screen and finished loading then turned to an all black page and froze up again. I tried doing it in normal startup mode and it froze up again after the Windows XP loading screen. It froze on the all black screen again. So, now it wont get any further then that screen. I took out the 56k modem and tried and it still didnt work. Everything seems to be running in the computer. Its not hot. I have not downloaded anything on my computer if a few months. I havent even open any attactments in emails in a few months. Oh yeah I cant get a HJT log or anything since it wont start up in any open. I have windows xp pro sp2..
I have tried looking through this site, without luck to fix this. on a Dell OptiPlex GX1 running XP, this computer is starting up by itself, is this a schedule problem, power managment, or bios or something else?? sorry not a virus, have done housecall, plus have nortons on it, had another computer do it, never worked out the problem, didn't believe it till I was sitting beside it and it started by itself.
I have a used computer that will not boot up it has windows XP but nothing happens it boots saying error "pocessor disabled" then it trys to boot then it just resets itself any ideas the bios also has some password on it that I cannot figure out
When I started the computer everything seamed to start except my LCD monitor was not getting a signal from the computer the screen was black. After trying a couple of times I hooked up an older 15" monitor. I seemed to get a signal in the beginning but after minutes the screen was black. I booted the computer again in Safe Mode and the computer booted OK. I tryed Safe Mode a few times and it booted OK each time.
How to launch the windows desktop without going through the user select page. I know that it is just a matter of customizing the way i log on but i can't remember how it's done.
I recently increased my virtual memory and after that my pc is not starting properly and i have to choose last known good configuration for starting it
Just now, my toshiba satellite a105-s4342 laptop was installing a bios driver from toshiba drivers website. During installation, my computer froze, for like 10 mins, then I rebooted and the computer just stayed black. Nothing is loading in the background, I know that for sure. I tried using the Recovery and Applications/Drivers disc but it only works after you load the bios screen.
Every time my computer starts up it goes to the desktop and it re-starts it self. im running it in safe mode rite now and it seems to be working fine. how can i fix this??
Yesterday I started getting a bunch of corrupt file messages while running XP pro S2. I was told to run chkdsk each time. Then the computer just started re-starting it's self over and over again. Sometimes after being on for 5 minutes sometimes 30. I re-installed windows deleting the old partions and starting from scratch with a full format. The mystery shut downs have disappeared but I have a new set of problems. I get the odd corrupt file message but I can;t seem to install ome programs. Office will not install for me. it keeps asking me to find different missing dll files which are clearly on the cd. i tried copying the files to a hard drive and pointing setup to thembut that didn't work either. i have two cd drives and it is does it on both. My power supply is fine.
recently my computer has been doing some very strange things. occasionally i get a box popping up saying that something has been terminated unexpectedly and the computer will shutdown in 60 seconds, but this is quite rare.
the main problems are having unusual crashes and moments where the computer acts like the monitor cable has been unplugged and then plugged back in. also i am having internet connection issues much more frequently than before, and sometimes my computer just slows down to snail pace or the mouse hangs every few seconds for no apparent reason.
i have searched through my task manager processes and cannot find anything there out of the ordinary. i have tried to run Ad-aware and Spybot but the programs both crash when they try to update, the same thing also happens with AVG antivirus, the computer refuses to let these apps access the internet connection. I do have Sygate Personal Firewall installed and usually it would run at startup but now there is no longer the icon in the system tray, and when I try to boot it up from start menu it too refuses to load. however the process 'Smc.exe' which I understand is part of Sygate Personal Firewall is still running.
As for system specs, I have:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 1 gig ram Geforce 6600 GT AGP Soundblaster Audigy 2 ASUS motherboard Windows XP Professional SP1
PS- I did have an idea why the spyware/adware/AV programs won't update, since recently my Sygate Personal Firewall seemed to forget which programs were 'allowed' or 'blocked', and I haven't run any of these programs since then. Now that I cannot access SPF to tell it to allow these programs that could be the reason they won't update. I am still at a loss as to why SPF/AVG do not load up on startup as they used to however.
Turned comp off. When rebooted it came up with computer did not shut down properly. then gives u option of modes to start in .but will not start in any just loads white bar at bottom of screen .Then restarts repeats.
Every time I go to boot my computer it won't boot up it goes to a screen that gives me 3 or 4 options like Safe Mode or Last known good configuration I have to select these choices about 10 times before it finally starts up.
I push in the start button to turn on the computer, It runs for about a second or two, then shuts off. No blue screens, no nothing. Shuts off before the monitor can come on. If you try for a few times, holding it in for a second or two, sometimes it will work right away and sometimes it takes 3 to 4 tries. No virus or trojan, ran everything under the sun for checks, Nothing shows in device manager as a problem. I have windows XP home and a HP computer. I get lights in the front of the computer as usual but they go off as soon as it shuts off. Added nothing new as far as programs go, but windows updates and norton updates are installed in the past 2 weeks. Am not a computer wizard, know enough to get a few things done. Checked HJT and its the same as two months ago. Nothing new. It clicks on as normal, then you hear it click off before it even does much of anything.
then gives some info on how to fix it like restarting, running CHKDSK /F and checking for virus'
i'v tried all the F8 startup obptions like safemode and last known good config etc, i made sure all the hardware was securely plugged in and had no dust in it, i made a DOS boot disk and tried to run scandisk but it seems it wont access anything on C and only scans A... I dont have a windows 2000 pro disk at the moment. I am running Windows 2000 Proffessional, quite sure its NTFS formated
I have computer running WIN2000. I have several old applications running on WIN95 which cannot run on WIN2000. Is it possible to start computer from CD in WIN95 with file allocation table FAT32 to use those old application?
The light on the tower turns on when I wasn't even using the computer. I turned on the monitor but it just displayed a blank screen like the computer wasn't even on. Before I could do anything, the tower shut down. So I pressed the power button and it wouldn't come on. I, once again, unplugged the tower and plugged it back in to find it working fine. I ran my virus scanner (Norton) and Adaware but got no problems from either of them. So I shut it down and later that night it happened again.
I started up my computer today (Dell, running Windows XP) and it was taking a long time for windows to load. Then I just got a message that said: "An error occured while initializing Active Shield. Your system might be running out of resources or disk space. Please close other applications and try restarting Active Shield". Right now I have no toolbar for windows, and no start menu, it's just empty down there. I just have my desktop icons that I can click on, but I can't move them around on my desktop. I tried to remove the McAffee Active Shield I can't because when I click on "remove" nothing happens and the computer just freezes for a moment. I have plenty of space on my computer so I know that's not a problem.
Some backround info: whenever I used to start my computer before, I would always get an update offer from McAffee which would slow windows down (I couldn't get anything to load if I double clicked on an icon) until I hit cancel. It seemed to just slow things down until I closed the McAffee offer.
I have a Dell Latitude D600 running Win XP Pro ver 2002 service pack 2 It has 27.8 G of space with 7.4 free and 3.3 for system restore. It has 512 RAM What other info is helpful?
my computer didn't star. It's not an overheating issue because everything inside is cool. I managed to get my computer to start a few times and it would get stuck at part where windows plays a noise to symbolise the computer is being started, the sound skips andnasty sounds come from my speakers.
this gave me the idea to go ahead and turn off my speakers andunplug everything. It still all didnt work. Then I went to bed and woke up the nextmorning and tried again. It started right up! then 20 minutes later i realised I didnt have the fan next to it to cool it down so I put the fan back, as soon as i swung the fan around it froze up and wouldn't start.
I didnt have time to mess with it and went to work, came home, still nothing. So I went to school, i just got home and got the idea to move a cable going from my sound card to the front of my computer around. I did that and partially perched it on the outside of my computer so it would stay in one spot. So I beleive the problem stems from my sound card, but i'm not sure if it's just coincidence.
it seems my keyboard is messing up too and I can't space properly or whatever.
Recently I have had trouble just starting up my computer after the computer was in hybernate and then sometimes it would just freeze up. When I shut down and push the computer's on button it took more than a dozen times before it would even come on. What is the cause of this and is there anything I can do to resolve this issue. I at first thought that my monitor was not working but it happened even after I installed a new one.
When I start computer, I get a couple error msgs. One says Error can not find DOCEOC16B1. and the other says cannot find Cwindows/cfgmgr52.dll. and another says cannot find MMC81. I dont have the Windows XP disc so I can not just pop it in and solve this where can i get these files I need. plz help!.
