'Network Installation' Don't Seem To Be Directly Downloaded
Jul 12, 2005
I've a computer with Windows XP Pro, which is not connected to the internet. Now, I want to update it in order to be all up-to-date and secured again. So I don't mean by just downloading SP2, but by installing all security patches available ever since!
So I need to download everything first, burn it on CD, and then install the patches on my other computer. No problem. But the problem is: where can I download all those updates?! I've searched all over the net, and all I found was softwarepatch.com; it only contains english updates, and since I've a Dutch version of XP installed, those won't work. Simply changing the urls from xxx-ENU.exe to xxx-NLD.exe doesn't work either, different languages of the same patch seem to be hosted under a whole other url.

I have a wireless home network: 3 XP Home machines with file and printer sharing. A long time ago I bought a x64 license through my school for somewhere around $7. I have an Athlon 64 3700+ machine I'd like to try it on, and in a nutshell I was wondering if, post-installation, it will still be able to communicate with the other two 32-bit XP machines on my network.

In my Network Connections it shows nothing. It is just white space. In my system tray, at the bottom right-hand corner of my screen, it shows no flashing computers. This has been so for around five months, I'm guessing. It never really bothered me until lately, and here is what I have done in order to fix it (to no avail, obviously):- Installed all critical Windows updates
- Ran Ad-Aware entire system scan (it's my only anti-virus program)- Tried to make a new network connection, but according to Windows, I have no network hardware, either- Put my Windows installation CD into my CD drive, went to "Install Optional Windows Components," and installed everything network related, then restarted.

I just installed XP pro Sp2 over Vista Home Premium on my laptop. Please note that I originally had XP and upgraded to VISTA (big mistake) a year ago. The installation process went well, however I can't connect to Internet. My network connection shows that I have a connection. I tried to do ipconfig from command menu and did nor get any IP address.

is it possible to download a file straight to the E (cd burner) drive? i don't know what i am doing, so playing around i just downloaded a file to that location, but it says the files are ~ready~ to be written to the cd and i don't know what steps to take next. i would be grateful for any guidance (oooh, and question - if i do manage to get files directly to the cd like that, will they still leave traces just as if i'd downloaded them to the hard drive?)

had virus on system, I tried running as many anti-virus, malware, spyware, trojan programs in Safe Mode to no avail. I came to the conclusion that I should do a fresh XP install (SP2). Everything was fine after re-formatting and installing until I got to the "Installing Network" segment with "32 minutes approx remaining". The first time I waited well over 40 minutes and nothing happened. I restarted and started over with a re-format and the same thing happened.
I've tried everything I can think of:disconnecting the ethernet, removing all my expansion cards, making sure all of the on-board devices were enabled in the BIOS.

my pc boots directly to the desktop. I want the boot process to stop at the welcome screen, at which I will enter my password. Such was the case when I last used my computer, 3 days ago. No known changes. Windows updates is set to manual. There are 2 accounts, un & administrator. Both are members of "Administrators" group. I am trying to log on as un. The computer is neither part of a domain or workgroup. start > run > control userpasswords 2 advanced tab > "users must enter a username & password" is selected.

I have a computer that is linked to a linksys wireless router by a wireless ethernet bridge. My internet was working properly until a couple of weeks ago when it just stopped working. My internet connection says imited or no connectivity and packets are only being sent not recieved. I have connected my computer directly to the modem so it is not going through the linksys hardware at all and there is still no connection. I have checked all of my computers hardware and it says everything is working properly. Also I have made sure all the drivers are updated and working properly.

I am the only user on winXP and ,therefore, I did not have the necessity of creating any user accounts and the windows boot directly into "welcome" screen. Of course, I am comfortable that way. Lately, I read somewhere that winXP is safer if operated on a non-admin account because not all application can be accessed from such an account. Hence the need for advice regarding User Accounts. When I open the User Accounts from Control Panel I find three accounts mentioned there.

I need to have network drive on my Windows XP computer. In order for a software to work, there needs to exist a network drive, named N, existing on my PC. Since there's not a second PC to link to, what I did was to created a directory named est on the same PC , share it out, and then, map a network drive, named N, to it. When my PC has an Ethernet cable connected to a switch, Windows XP will see that N drive (existing on the same PC). The moment I disconnect that Ethernet cable from the switch, the N drive is gone. Is there a way to have a mapped network drive on XP (as mentioned above), without the need to have a network cable connecting that PC to a switch?

My network adapter does not appear in Device Manager, until I "Show hidden devices". And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.

I've lately had some problems with my win-xp (home) following installation/ un-installation of daemon tools that corrupted some registry files. After an unsuccesfull repair-instalation of xp, i re-installed xp onto the secondary partition of my hard drive (d:, the original instalation being on c. I was intending to format the c: drive, then instal a copy of xp-pro i have onto it
finally moving the files i want to keep back from the d: drive onto the c: drive. The problem i'm now having is on formatting i recieve the error message 'system partition is not allowed to be formatted', as it is the primary partition. Can i go about formatting this drive in partitions and proceed with the re-install without having to remove the files i have on the d: drive? How might i go about this?

when I browse "My Network Places", the browsing is so incredibly slow. It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.
This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.

I started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)
